not quite brag worthy:
gin blossoms
blasphemy
great band
-
something old & something new
Impossible Germany + Gun
that would get peoples' attention
-
Once again - it is not really about sound or what we like, or if we don't care what we get - but rather, the policy of the taping community as a whole.
he's right, by the way
-
it's funny -- jay gets so little press that an awful story with no insight or charm gets 50 responses.
speaking of jay farrar ... i'm about to see him in two hours and i'm awfully happy about that
-
Nels noodles too much. It wrecked SBS. They'd be a better band if he left.
I've listened to that impossible germany solo - supposedly nels' crowning moment in wilco - a lot and it just does nothing for me
just doesn't go anywhere
i'm not a huge nels fan. talented guy, just never thought it was a good fit.

I'm getting so excited for this weekend already. I've got a pretty good seat, and I can't wait to finally get the chance to see the band from up close after being way back in the grass at the Pines the last two summers.
Does anyone know what the best streets around the theatre are for parking? I've heard the neighborhood isn't that great, and since I'm planning to stick around after the show to try to talk to the band, I don't really want to be walking back to my car down some sketchy side street that late.
I'm planning to come down around 4 or 5. I'd be interested in meeting up with folks before the show.
there's a smallish parking lot across the street, next to Wendy's (if it's still a Wendy's). If you get there that early, you'll be fine across the street.
-
yeah, it sounds good enough to get an idea of how special the show was but probably not a recording you'll go back to a ton
and there are now 97 seeders so you're gonna have it pretty quick

Definitely old news...
but definitely worth downloading

from pitchfork:
"As previously reported, former Rogue Wave bassist and Magnolia Electric Co. touring member Evan Farrell died late last year in an Oakland apartment fire. Farrell's untimely passing has weighed heavily on many, and none so much as the wife and two children the beloved musician left behind.
Several big names have stepped forward to help the Farrell family by contributing unique items to a benefit auction hosted by friends of Evan. Among the goods available now on eBay for bidders: a signed copy of Thom Yorke's The Eraser, a printer's proof for the New Pornographers' Challengers bearing the signature of Mr. A.C. Newman, a signed copy of Joan of Arc's classic Live in Chicago, 1999, and a bunch of awesome posters and rare screen-prints from Jay Ryan and Mat Daly of Chicago's own Bird Machine printmaking collective (the folks responsible for lots of snazzy Pitchfork Music Festival promotional material as well). More items are expected to hit the auction block....
Most of the current auctions end on the evening of Sunday, February 17 (with the Newman one ending the following Tuesday morning), and all proceeds once again go to Evan Farrell's family. You may also still donate directly to the Farrells via PayPal .... "
that is crushing
i had not heard about that
RIP and peace and love to the family

i don't do bit torrent sites due to their ties with illegal downloading and the virus possibility. i may be off based on these two thoughts but i'm not very comfortable with having someone pull stuff off of my computer, either.
sorry, i'm slightly off topic here, but willy ... you oughta reconsider bit torrent downloading. i've filled two 500 gb hard drives with live shows and the risk is zero. as long as you use accepted trackers approved by the trading community - dimeadozen, thetradersden, bt.etree, etc., there are no worries about viruses. and although other people are technically pulling stuff off your computer, they're doing it through a tracker, so the safety level there is 100 percent. this is safe, legal and fun. and easy to set up. and addictive. i highly recommend it.

I enjoy listening to MP3s from these boards here at work. I listen through a broken pair of crappy ear buds. Sound fidelity means nothing to me. Not having to wait for a massive FLAC file to download, not having to deal with getting a log in for a restricted to 10,000 logins torrent site, and not having to deal with actually downloading torrents are all huge perks. The one-click convenience of MP3s posted to a blog is excellent.
If you're concerned about sound fidelity, please stick to the torrent trading sites and STFU.
why the hostility?
there's an accepted way of doing things in the trading community, and there are good reasons for it
like i wrote up above, this has to do with posting and trading. i don't think anybody cares what audio format anybody uses on their own, without trading
i have about 50 wilco or tweedy shows that i'd be glad to trade - even to you, groo. you're just not getting them in MP3 format
-
posting or trading any lossless show in lossy format is forbidden by all collectors / traders / tapers
it's considering polluting the audio pool
once a lossy show begins circulating, the pool can never be pure again
it takes half a minute to convert flacs to *.wav files so there's really no reason to convert to MP3 and trade or post
the files are larger, but so what - now you have two sendspace files to post instead of one
so whether or not you can tell the difference in sound, please respect the wishes of the tapers and traders and everybody in the trading community

I just finished watching King of California (Michael Douglas, Evan Rachel Wood) and in the last scene, right before the credits roll, California Stars queues up. Nice ending! The commentary has the director explaining how he had to go thru a lot to get rights to the song, but it was important for him to have it.
good for jay bennett, who wrote the music. hope he gets a nice payday out of it

i saw graham parker at a house concert once ... he was playing in a living room in front of 50 people
when the set was over, he got up, thanked us, walked off to huge applause, and then looked to his left and saw a foyer and looked to his right and saw a kitchen and said, "I don't know where to go until the encore!"
broke everybody up

What Light ...
that song
a friend of mine called me and said, "Isn't Wilco that band you really dig?"
yeah
"Well, one of their songs just came on XM and ... you sure this is the band you dig?"
