I find half of this post funny - the other half not funny.
one out of two
that's actually better than my usual ratio
-
I know someone who once exchanged actual hand written letters with Pete Townshend.
yeah, but he was 12 years old!
I can't see Jay Farrar doing that.come on, jay doesn't even talk to his wife
-
yeah, you've got to explain what you mean by "downloading"
i download stuff off archive, dime and off artists' own web sites, etc., that's legal
downloading ain't illegal
-
i'm stoked to see mark spencer w/ son volt. i have missed the lap steel in recent shows.
of course tonight is the opener and jays fucking website is down.
the new songs jay played on his solo tour (cocaine and ashes, big sur) sound like a return to the alt-country sound of yesteryear. i hope the volt breaks them out on tour.
i wasn't in love with cocaine and ashes
but very much looking forward to the full band shows as well
jay's web site is a joke ... don't think jay or his management is real concerned with his fans

catherine popper
i met her the other night
my god
-
I may hit this one -- thanks a lot, had no idea!
cool!
i'll be there too
you owe me a beer now by my calculations!
-
who's going?
sounds like mark spencer and andrew duplantis are both in, which is very cool

Guided By Voices Electrifying Conclusion (final tour) poster
signed by Pollard, Gillard, Slusarenko, Farley and March

I don't think Jeff reads this.
but bon jovi does, so lay off the wise cracks please
Happiness, it's been no friend to me
But forever after ain't what its all cracked up to be
Yeah, I had a taste, you were my fantasy
But I lost my faith when I hit reality
I don't need no guru to tell me what to do
When you're feeling like a headline on
Yesterdays news
Come on, come on, come on
Give me something for the pain
Give me something for the blues
Give me something for the pain when
I feel I've been danglin from a hang-man's noose
Give me something I can use
To get me through the night
Make me feel all right,
Something like you
Loneliness has found a home in me
My suitcase and guitar are my only family
I've tried to need someone, like they needed me
I opened up my heart, but all I did was bleed
I don't need no lover, just to get screwed
They don't make a bandage, that's going to cover my bruise
Come on, come on, come on
Give me something for the pain
Give me something for the blues
Give me something for the pain when
I feel I've been danglin from a hang-man's noose
Give me something I can use
To get me through the night
Make me feel all right,
Something like you
Pull me under (help I'm falling)
Run through my veins (night is calling)
To a place (feels like I'm flying)
Where I feel no pain (christ I'm dying)
Be the pillow under my head
Cover me when I'm in your bed
Take me higher than I've ever been
Take me down and back again
Come to me, be my disguise
Open your coat, let me crawl inside
Come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on
Give me something for the pain
Give me something for the blues
Give me something for the pain when
I feel I've been danglin' from a hang-man's noose
Give me something I can use
To get me through the night
Make me feel all right,
Something like you

Well said, Doug.
for me The Search is No. 2 behind Trace
and not all that far behind either
terrific piece of work
-
dime does that every year
last year's screen was worse -- something like a huge RIAA logo saying, "You've been caught downloading illegal material."
funny stuff
-
I would think even his most die-hard fans would agree with this. I like his solo albums and Search quite a bit. That said, I would easily take out 10% or more. The guy needs an editor to make a good album into a great album.
an editor? that's like saying Shakespeare should have trimmed some of Hamlet and Macbeth, because they were too wordy
i wouldn't change a damn thing on any of Jay's records, solo or son volt
this is some of the most brilliant, inventive, compelling, cliche-free music i've ever heard
then again, if ya dig 90 percent of a record, that's a pretty damn good percentage
as for Uncle Tupelo, I would start with Still Feel Gone. tremendous
-
There are moments when I feel they are trying to hard to recapture the past
this hits the nail on the head for me why i don't like this
this record screams out to me: "OK, what we've been doing hasn't been working, we know that. Let's make a conscious and transparent effort to do what people used to like." Just rings out disingenuous to me.
Marah's last record struck me the exact same way. OK, this is our return to when we were fucking great.
well ... why did you make me buy the last couple records then? that you claimed were "your best work ever?"
bands that do this shit lose all credibility with me
i can't even list to marah anymore because of this dynamic

There were a lot of people trying to find tickets outside the theater on Saturday, and I didn't see anyone selling. Stroudsburg is sort of in the middle of nowhere, so I can't imagine there's a huge amount of local interest in the show, but I'm sure a lot of people will be coming in for it. You never know--check craigslist and ebay. Somebody might be trying to get rid of a ticket at the last minute. Good luck.
thanks
"sort of in the middle of nowhere" is putting it mildly! but there's nothing on stubhub right now or ebay - not even expensive-as-crap tickets - so it doesn't look good. small place. i'm bummed. if i don't get in, i'll scream louder than Donna!!
but listening to April 10, 1978, Atlanta, is cheering me up a little
-
it's been a long while since i pulled this one out
still sounds freaking great
-
I hope someone posts 4 times in this thread about how they don't like him.
let it go
-
REM hasn't written a song in 10 years as good as Guided By Voices / Robert Pollard's 500th-best song during the same 10 years
-
wow, great setlist
i'm toying with seeing the stroudsburg show on tuesday
but it's a long way to go to hope to get a ticket outside
-
after all the buildup, I was stunned at how trite most of his stuff is
I gave him a fair chance but have no desire to ever listen to a piece of Bright Eyes music again
how did the Village Voice put it? music for gawky drama girls?
sure as hell ain't for me
-
Yessir! Dickson Street Music Fest in Fayetteville! Slim chance I'll make it but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
that would be so cool
i saw open for REM back when REM didn't suck
great double bill
love the feelies
i posted on dime once that it seemed like no feelies shows on dime included the song "Higher Ground," which I love. and i wondered why
within an hour, their drummer posted and found me a few available shows that included it
that's damn cool

you can convert *.shn files to *.wav files using mkw audio compression tool
it's a free download @ http://etree.org/mkw.html and very easy to use
just drag & drop the files and watch 'em go
just make sure that under "options" you unclick "delete files after converting." otherwise, you won't be able to continue seeding
-
i remain baffled by peoples' refusal or inability to run bittorrent software
it's ridiculously simple and easy for even the most novice computer user. for some reason, there's an air of mystery about this, but it literally takes 5 minutes to set up
download azureus (free download -- go to http://azureus.sourceforge.net/download.pp)
register at one of the numerous sites -- dimeadozen & hungercity are my favorite (or don't & use eztree)
click on a torrent (that has at least one seeder)
save it
when it hits 100 percent, you have the show. stick around & seed for others. you'll generally need a ratio of 50 percent uploaded to downloaded to remain a user
no mystery about flacs either. just download the free flac front end @ http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html and convert the files to *.wav files you can do anything with
this ain't rocket science, folks

LOVED this song when I was a kid...
how 'bout "heartbeat (it's a love beat)" by the deFranco Family?
nice
great little song
listen to my heart pound ...
Favorite Beatles Song

when i was a kid, it was I Should Have Known Better. loved that song as a 13-year-old
now ... probably across the universe
i remember the morning after john lennon was killed, we were in central park for a memorial and they had these huge speakers set up and david sancious was i think at the capital theater in passaic playing improv piano and they were piping it into the park. was amazing. i remember him playing something that morphed into across the universe and it just was devastating
