Saw these guys open for Meat Puppets in 1987 or so and was kinda unimpressed. Then I heard something from one of their albums (maybe the one above?) and really dug 'em.

    Fans?

Anyone have anything of theirs to up? Nothing appears to be available anymore (except used on cassette?!?!)

    Thanks.

i saw them open for somebody ... i think it was scruffy the cat or dumptruck ... circa 1988

    left zero impression on me

    that really helped, didn't it?

    Supporting Jens Lekman.

  3. I just finished watching the documentary and thought this was worth sharing to the Vietcong

But the overarching theme is his unique approach to music. For Seeger, music is a tool to bring people together, and that, as much as the singing, is the point. As we see him leaving the stage of Carnegie Hall at the end of a concert when he was 84, he says in voiceover,

  4. DJs STV SLV and ABX (aka Steve Reidell and Aaron Brink) ...

ok, DJs STV SLV and ABX are actually Steve Reidell and Aaron Brink

is STV Steve, and SLV and ABX are Aaron?

or is STV SLV Steve, and ABX is Aaron?

there are three sets of initials but only two DJs

seriously, who sits down and thinks to himself, "Let's call ourselves STV SLV and ABX? That'll be cool"

    WTF

  5. I'm an XPN member and fairly active on their boards. No way this would have escaped my notice. If it happened it happened w/o involvement from XPN and completely unnoticed by a large number of Wilco fans on that board.

Also, Brandywine Raceway was turned into a shopping center over 10 years ago.

btw - KEXP blows XPN's doors off for variety. I support both but stream KEXP at work. John Richards is probably my favorite DJ at the moment. Some of the best at XPN (e.g. Matt Reilly) sit on the bench while Michaela Majoun and Helen Leicht clutter the airwaves.

haven't heard KEXP but i can echo the comment that WPRB blows away WXPN

WXPN is the worst excuse for an "alternative" radio station in America. It's actually the most heavily formatted station you'll ever hear. They blow their own horn like they're some cutting edge, free-form station, but they NEVER stray from their tightly formatted playlist of 60 percent women singersongwriter stuff, 35 percent tired familiar oldies (steeley dan, david bowie, rem), 4 percent current male singersongwriter stuff and 1 percent actual good new music you've never heard before. and that 1 percent is probably a little high.

WXPN never takes risks, never plays deep album cuts, never plays anything remotely edgy or experimental, never plays anything with balls. it's music for middle-aged suburban moms and dads who want to think they're cutting edge because they know who She and Him are.

    WXPN sucks.

  6. i like the way you think! :thumbup

    Jay: This'll be cool

    Jeff: Yeah

Jay: OK, how about we do Lookin' for a Way Out?

    Jeff: Let's do Gun

Jay: Nah, we should do one of mine, since I don't play 'em in Son Volt but you play Gun all the time

    Jeff: That's 'cuz Gun's a better song

Jay: Why'd you have to hit on my girlfriend?

Jeff: Why couldn't you just call me when you broke up the band?

    Jay: Drop dead.

    Jeff: Fuck you.

  7. My first REM show was in 1995. Out of the almost 700 Concerts I have been to I would put it in the top 10.

    The Setlist was

23 June 1995 - Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

    support: Luscious Jackson

set: I Took Your Name / What's The Frequency, Kenneth? / Circus Envy / Turn You Inside-Out / Crush With Eyeliner / Try Not To Breathe / Undertow / Welcome To The Occupation / Bang And Blame / Strange Currencies / Revolution / Tongue / Man On The Moon / Country Feedback / Half A World Away / Losing My Religion / Orange Crush / Finest Worksong / Get Up / Star 69

encore: Let Me In / Everybody Hurts / So. Central Rain / Departure / It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

Sounds like our expierences were very different. The songs in bold I would consider older songs which they played a handful of. Where or when did you see them?

saw REM at least 10 times and loved all of 'em until the last one. was probably a few years before your MSG show ... in philly @ the spectrum ... don't remember exactly when. that's a great set list. i didn't get any catalogue stuff. and i'm not a big "play the oldies" guy. but, ya know, just one would have been cool

    very disappointing night.

  8. When I saw REM in the mid-1990s it was one of the worst concerts I've ever attended. They didn't play a single old track, the sound was shit, Stipe was arrogant, and I swore that no matter whatever happened in the future I'd never spend money on this band again.

So now that they're actually playing songs from before they started sucking I'm not going back on my word.

    So no

  9. this new pollard record ... Off to Business ... blows

so much for the "return to form" we'd been hearing from the pollard camp

seems like he's good for like two good songs per record these days.

gratification to conrete is a cool track. but i haven't found the second good one yet.

too many chords, too few melodies, no riffs

bob still hasn't put out a great record since From a Compound Eye

  10. There aren't a lot of artists who annoy me more right now.

I've only heard the few things that have been on the radio, but she sounds like one of those artists that some record company has decided to shove down our throats, like it or not. I'm betting she tested really well in focus groups.

    Kind of like Jason Mraz.

it's physically impossible to listen to Jason Mraz without vomiting.

    Tunstall may be worse
