on that, i agree but also, the lack of any overly glowing reviews/initial excitement has been a bit surprising too

Mouthfuls all the way.

i prefer Emily's voice, but i like the style of Amy's more (very country). Emily's sounds quite a bit like Cat Power at times, and in that case i'd just rather listen too Chan.
-
i like it, but i'd put it behind Amy Millan's solo record and FAAAAAAAR behind Feist's (duh) Emily has an earlier one too, but it's not that good.

they were just playing a cut from that on the radio here like 5 min ago

maybe so. i've listened to it probably 7-8x however. and i've stated as much that hopefully it grows on me. nor did i state that it was my "final conclusion". but even still, without being blown away by a single song on the album, even IF and when it grows on me, it's not gonna knock my socks off. maybe i'll consider it more than just a pleasant follow up in time, dunno. as for Chutes, i loved it right away, actually more than Inverted. i've since gone back to preferring the more electric sound of Chutes tho. yep.
-
well, prepare to be wrong, cuz it's being getting a pretty lukewarm reception. not saying people are hating it, but even the diehard Shins fans i know aren't blown away by it or anything. not that you care, or that Pfork matters much, but no way in hell it gets a score even close to Chutes. i would keel over and die of shock if it did. and if Australia is the best song you've heard all year... wow it's not even the best song on the record some random quotes from a few diff boards i frequent:

the new "Who" album is streaming on that AOL link too... who's gonna be the first brave soul?

hoping FIOE is a "transitional" record. it's not bad, just not great. they should have cut 2-3 tracks from it. Room On Fire is still my fave but yeah, YOLO might be their best song.

http://music.aol.com/songs/new_releases_fu...S00050000000015 really good stuff, on my 2nd listen now, few stunning tracks, 1-2 ehhhhh songs, but i'm not dissapointd at all. definitely not on the level of 'O' yet, but i'd have been stunned if it was. Elephant (aka: Blower's Daughter Pt. 2) turned out absolutely incredibe. Rootless Tree is pretty fucking harsh... maybe too harsh/loud, or it could be this tinny stream i suppose. the lyrics to Dog (The Girl Who Does Yoga) are just god awful .
-
ok. but STD are pretty bad, sorry
-
good record. maybe better than FIOE even... (not saying a ton i know)
-
joke or not, i could do without, that was my only point as for "attention grabbing", i never really felt that way the number of times i saw them w/ Jay. yes he was a bit more in your face, but certainly not pulling out all the stops in the rockstar handbook
-
also, there's a few songs on here that sound like sequels of past Shins songs, for better or worse... like Red Rabbits definitely reminds me of Young Pilgrims melody somewhat.
-
for the most part, yes, but there's also a good deal of new sounds/instruments too, which i can certainly appreciate them trying something different, even if (imo) it didn't totally work at times. not that it matters, but i can almost guarantee there is no way this record will get as high of praise from Pfork (though they went a bit overboard w/ their Chutes score/review too) i think though like i said, my biggest issue is that it's a fairly mellow/midtempo (and at times almost a downer) of a record, ESPECIALLY compared to the first two. considering i looked to The Shins for their sunny pop,
-
because i think that they messed with a pretty good thing/formula a bit more than they really needed to. of course if they had just went w/ the same similiar formula and created a ton of catchy indie pop "anthems" ala the first 2 albums, they'd have been accused of being "one trick ponys", so it's a catch 22 really. there are certainly some great songs on here, but i think for me the midtempo-ness of it all is a bit dissapointing. there's not a single song on here that touches the highs of Caring Is Creepy or Kissing The Lipless, had it had something like that, i might feel a bit differently
-
i think the melodies & choruses are a lot more reserved this time around... they're certainly failing to stick in my head then, cuz the only song i've even had the urge to sing along with so far is 'Australia', which is a good tune, as much as it owes to The Smiths. regardless, i can guarantee you this album will divide Shins and indie music fans (heck it already has on the various forums i'm on), mark my words. trust me, i wish i loved this a ton or was head over heels for it, as they've been a fave of mine since the first time i saw them w/ Preston School of Industry in '01, but s

i dunno... i've probably listened to it 5-6 times and while i like it, "great" certainly wouldn't be an adjective i'd use, especially compared to Chutes & Inverted anyway. where are the great melodies?
-
i have nothing wrong w/ his musical or vocal abilities, i just was turned off a bit by his goofy faces and rock star poses/moves, that's all. i know i'm not alone in that, heck even Jeff has made fun of them from time to time.
-
ok, not THAT old, but it leaked Friday and was posted about on VC already, is all as for it not being on oink, it's because of the low bitrate of the leak (128kbps). though it sounds decent for being a 128 (not great, but certainly more than listenable)
-
maybe he doesn't do the windmills or the rock star poses anymore? i haven't seen Wilco sine '04, maybe he's toned it down, if so cool.
