  1. It has brought a very savory scene; foodie restaurants galore! Tons of economic growth but lots of complaints about population growth and skyrocketing property values/ rent.

I second this. Although one restaurant just closed so the husband/wife team could focus on their mmj edibles business.

The mmj store a block away never has any 'undesirables' hanging around, probably due to the armed security guards on patrol. The liquor store however is a different story.

  2. The NFL does a GREAT job of honoring veterans. Maybe it's partly because it's a physical sport and almost military-ish in how teams are run. Many, if not all teams, often have fly-overs using stealth bombers before the game while honoring veterans. To me....maybe I'm in the minority...the national anthem before a football game feels like a tribute to those who fought and fight for our country. That's all I think about...my dad or grandpa or family member or friend who was or is in the military.

I think the NFL should, like the NBA, instruct all players they must stand. But they don't. Kaepernick has his right to sit. And I....and many others...have the right to be offended by it.

Gonna be VERY interesting tomorrow if Seattle sits, as I've heard they will. Sitting on the 15th anniversary of 9/11 is, in my opinion, not cool.

And they get paid very well to do it. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25181085/nfl-teams-received-54-million-from-defense-department-in-last-4-years

  3. Hillary is going to destroy him in the debates.

Probably, but it wont really matter.

    From Charles Blow today:

“Recently, a few political scientists have begun to discover a human tendency deeply discouraging to anyone with faith in the power of information. It’s this: Facts don’t necessarily have the power to change our minds. In fact, quite the opposite. In a series of studies in 2005 and 2006, researchers at the University of Michigan found that when misinformed people, particularly political partisans, were exposed to corrected facts in news stories, they rarely changed their minds. In fact, they often became even more strongly set in their beliefs. Facts, they found, were not curing misinformation. Like an underpowered antibiotic, facts could actually make misinformation even stronger.”

  4. Question about growlers. When we moved into our new place the person left 5 in the place. Used them the first time this weekend. That's a lot of beer. We got 2 filled and by today, just filled them yesterday afternoon, the beer was a little off. Probably had about half left in each. Any advice on keeping the beer fresher, besides drinking faster? Would it keep longer if we hadn't opened one?

    Got the beer from http://ratiobeerworks.com/

  5.  As it appears Americans do not know much about Islam, don't know people who are Muslim, and not really interested in learning more about Islam.  Which is where the problem lies.  What we see on the news and in our daily life about Muslims and the Islamic faith is pretty bad.  It is ISIS did this, ISIS bombed this, ISIS beheaded this, etc.  Also it seems that in many Movies and TV shows the Muslim character is a terrorist or bad guy.  There are a handful of things in our culture that show Muslims in a positive light.  I am talking mainstream here not some indie film or show that is on channel 387.  In this country we are not exposed to many Muslims.

Growing in a small town in Iowa I was not exposed to any Muslims at all. Most of what I gathered was from reading these books, in case anyone is interested:

    Sorry I'm a librarian.

  6. Guys - military participation percentages are a sideshow to the shitshow.

The only reason Hixter even brought it up was that he was guessing at an answer as to why so many AR-15s are owned in the US. He guessed that part of the reason probably has to do with military service. He's probably right that military service has something to do with it.

    Christ.

I totally agree. I just like to know where people get there numbers especially when I see very different ones.

  7. So I was reading an article on NationalReview today about gun control and saw this paragraph.

[AR-15]isn’t exotic or particularly powerful. It is the most popular rifle in the country. At least 3.5 million are in circulation. It is lightweight, accurate, and without much kick. You wouldn’t use it in combat and, in fact, wouldn’t necessarily use it to hunt. A .223-caliber gun, it is less powerful than many handguns. Some states forbid .223-caliber rifles in deer hunting because they aren’t powerful enough to reliably take down the game.

I was just wondering if this gun isn't great for hunting how it is the most popular? Is it just good for target practice?
I'm not trying to bring up the gun debate again, I just don't personally know anyone who owns one so was wondering.

Oh and for those who wonder about the context of finding articles, I read news from everything from TheBlaze to the NYTimes just so I can get different sides of the coin.

  8. I often wonder what "moderate" Republicans or those Republicans who see Trump as an embarrassment would do if the 2016 Election came down to Clinton v Trump?

I guess there is only these options

    1. Vote for Trump

    2. Vote for Clinton

    3. Vote for a third party candidate

    4. Not vote at all

It would be interesting to see where Republicans stand and how they vote.

You don't have to wonder! From the latest Quinnipiac poll out Dec 2

.If the election for President were being held today, and the candidates were Hillary Clinton the Democrat and Donald Trump the Republican, for whom would you vote?

  9. Just in case people wanted to watch the games here in the US NBC (probably on their Universal Sports network and Univision)  will be showing  four USA pool matches, opening match, both semi-finals, bronze final and the final with all the games being available through their streaming site as well.

  10. You are disappointed that Guantanamo is still open, when Congress is the one that won't let him close it down and also disappointed because he has allowed drilling in Alaska when any Republican or Libertarian would allow drilling just about anywhere any time.  The things you should be disappointed in are far more major and within his control than that. At some point everyone has to make a decision in the general election, that's ultimately the only one that counts.

    LouieB

I am well aware that it is now Congress's problem that Guantanamo is still open. But he had 2 years at the start of his presidency to close it and did not.

As far as drilling goes, I do not doubt that a Republican president would allow drilling and depending on the particular Libertarian they would too. I guess that is the point right? That he is doing the same thing that any other party would be doing, so what difference would voting for a different candidate matter if they all would end up drilling anyway?

  11. Well I watched all the debates and I really remember the first one because 1)it was at my school and 2) Obama 'lost' the debate but the things Romney was saying sounded crazy to me. So then it became between Obama and Gary Johnson. As Colorado was a very close call (according to the polls) I was very torn until the last minute.

I am disappointed now because of a few things. First, Guantanamo still being open. And second because I think he has made compromises like allowing drilling in Alaska and elsewhere that will have a large negative effect on the economy by not forcing innovation in the energy sector.

  12. I agree.

Awhile back, I posted an article about the 10 reasons to vote Republican.  Which touched a nerve with some of the more conservative members of this forum.  While admittedly it was click bait and kind of stupid, with the popularity of Trump and the other candidates it brings those points back into question.

Trump has said some stupid and down right racist things.  Any logical, sane person can clearly see that.  But he still is in second place in many polls, even after his McCain thing.  So either people don't care what he says or agree with what he says.  Also you do not see much of the GOP field trying to refute or distant themselves from what Trump says (in regards to immigrants from Mexico, they have to their credit defended McCain).  This in combined with the defense of the confederate flag leads me to conclude, the GOP is the party of racist stupid people.  Not to say if you are Republican you are a stupid racist.  I know many people who vote Republican who are nice people, but if you are a stupid racist, then you should vote Republican.

In an article in the NY Times from this weekend they quoted a few Trump supporters not one was under the age of 60. Also many polls are still conducted over landline phones, which I know of no one in my age range (20-30) who has one. Polls are notorious for adjusting their (unreleased) numbers to take this into account, but this 'leveling' also allows bias to come into play as well as making polls track together to not seem like the one outlier. I would not put any stock into polls at this point.

I think he's out there to draw liberal fire away from the legit GOP candidates, he's a distraction. For a moderate swing voter (wherever he/she is) Marco Rubio and Bush are going to feel damned reasonable after some weeks of Trump ruling the spotlight with presumably intentional gaffes.

I am a swing voter! I voted libertarian (Bob Barr) in 2008 and Democrat in 2012 (wish I hadn't). I would really like to see John Hunstman run again, but that is not going to happen.

  13. I am in the process of planning a trip to Istanbul for next summer. Heading to France for the Euro's but have a week (or more) between games. We are planning on heading to Istanbul and Jordan for a couple of days each. Any recommendations are welcome.

I spent a miserable 24 hours in Iceland about a year and half ago. Our flight got delayed for a day and in December on our way to France for our honeymoon. Long story short - if you haven't packed for Iceland in December, don't go to Iceland in December.

  14. Depending on where I am dictates how I listen to my music. At home, where there is always an internet connection, its streaming either Pandora or Spotify. At work same deal. In the car, I have my iPod which has all of my cd's on it as is. Airplanes, iPod. just about anywhere else I don't really listen to music.

I also do not really buy new cd's either. In the end, I think I was once like many of you, had to have the cover art, the jewel case etc. Or just didn't trust harddrives or the internet. Now I have fully embraced the wireless world. I think I am going to get rid of them. If any one in Denver wants to come peruse them before I take to the cd store send me a pm.
