  1. So I was cleaning my apartment today and getting rid of a lot of clutter. Then I came to my CD's. I have about 200+ sitting on the bottom shelf of a book case in my living room. There isn't really a need for the space they are taking up, but I haven't used them in over 2 years either. My wife would also like to see them gone. I have a record store a block away that I might be able to unload them on as well.

So should I get rid of them? I almost never buy new CD's anymore, mostly just stream through Spotify or Pandora so I hope not to have this problem again in a few years.

  2. I've been working on that one (with other books between) for months. My tips: keep a short note on the back of your bookmark to keep the Incandenza family straight, as well as the secret agents, and some of the major tennis kids. If you look at the wikipedia article it can clarify things when you dont see a certain character for 75 pages, it doesn't really spoil anything.

I also noticed when I can keep up a good reading diet in my busier weeks (for me a few hours a week can be good) the book is not nearly as laborious as it seems. It takes adjustment and I skip most of the footnotes, but I could list a dozen "important works" with lower page counts that actually felt more like hard work.

His prose is just so good and funny, no matter how dense. The great Eschaton controversy towards the beginning of the second half is one of my all time favorite pieces of writing.

Perfect timing! I am looking for a book to read along the lines of Infinite Jest, Gravity's Rainbow, House of Leaves etc. But am having trouble coming up with new ideas. Any suggestions?

  3. Jesus! I didn't know Champion's League Games were affordable. Lucky bastard.

To be fair I was on my honeymoon.

Also a few years ago I was visiting a friend in Manchester and saw United/Lyon and that was only 50 pounds. So I would say that in general Champions league games have been cheaper than non-sense friendlies with the youth team.

  4. I am down to play. My tastes run more towards the Italian league, but do follow the EPL as well.

I went to the United Roma game in Denver yesterday. It was fun, but the stadium felt empty because the tickets were so expensive. I paid over $50 for nose bleed seats. I went to a Champions League game last year between Borussia Dortmund and Marseille and got lower level seats for 45 euro.

  5. Thomas Pynchon, Huruki Murakami and Philip Roth are the only three authors that I can say I have read everything they have published. But I have many other favorite authors the first that comes to mind is Joyce Carol Oates. Oh and JD Salinger

  6. I always view this situation as standard prisoners dilemma. If (for simple sake I'll just use China and the US, but expand as needed) both countries put holds on carbon emissions, prices go up, but the planet is better off. If one country does and the other does not, the country with no controls come out ahead and the planet is half better off. If both do not put any controls in place, neither gets left behind and the planet is worse off. In this case, because neither country trust the other fully to abide by regulations it makes sense for neither to agree to limits. There needs to be some incentive  immediate and strong, to entice both countries to agree to controls. I don't really see that though.

  7. Oh lets just jump in?

List of causes of death from 2010 from the cdc. Broken down by age range and cuase of death. (ie. 5-9 "unintentonal MV accident). It is only one page and big and bright.

report from the California attorney general about guns and their use in crime. Not a big sample because; "Although legislation for this report states that the data should be based on information obtained from local and state crime laboratories, the legislation does not require local laboratories to report this information to the Department of Justice. Therefore, local law enforcement agencies submit this information voluntarily, which limits the data received for inclusion in this report"

A few pages, but with big bright graphs.

Report from the justice department about the victims of violence committed by strangers. I think this is kind of general knowledge but you are more likely to be killed by someone you know than by a stranger. This goes in depth into the victim characteristics (page 3) and the type of weapon used (page 7).

Someone asked a while ago for some stats that broke down gun deaths by type making allusions to gangs and things like that. It is hard to find information like this because the CDC is tasked with compiling this information, but is not funded.

  8. So my birthday is that week, and my girlfriend and I were thinking of going in for the "private reserve." Which is an extra $200 for the concert plus, "access to a preferred viewing area adjacent to the stage as well as complimentary food and beverages." Do you think it is worth it? We have never done a kind of VIP thing for a concert. Any input is appreciated.

  9. Thank you for the replies. I have looked over the interwebs, and quite frankly there are tons of receivers and some how more reviews. I have looked at an Onkyo many times. Also a Harman kardon, that has the some of the best amazon reviews I have seen.

The zone 2 feature seems really freaking cool. I didn't know about that one.

Any advice on buying in a store (either Best Buy or home theater store) vs buying online?

  10. Hi all,

I am in the market for an AV Receiver. I am currently using a 10 year old Denon cd player to run sound for my TV, Blu Ray player (via the TV), turntable, Roku (also via the TV), my computer, and sometimes my iPod. As you can guess this involves lots of different cords, changing of chords to use different devices and not the best sound quality for anything but the CD player itself.

I would say I have about $500 to spend, but any advice on cheaper models would be helpful. Only the Bluray player and the TV have HDMI output; everything else is the on the yellow and red cords. My computer only has the single headphone jack, but it does produce sterol sound. Also I set up my computer to stream to my TV, via the Roku last week, so no longer have to hook up the computer to anything (TV or receiver).

    Thanks.
