  1. I've read through a couple of threads that says he does from time to time. I'm not going to search for them so you'll just have to trust me. :shifty

He has posted once under Sue's username, and I'm sure he has read some threads, but I highly doubt its more than a rare occurrence. Basically, I never post or read others posts and wonder what JT is thinking, whether he reads or not.

  2. I'm sorry I posted here about Casino Queen. I agree that this isn't a great thread. I started imagining that Jeff might read this and I can hardly criticize someone that I think is one of the greatest songwriters of our generation for a couple of lines that I wouldn't have used in one of my songs. Normally my songs make me cringe. Sorry Jeff, you're the greatest. :worship

I don't think Jeff reads this.

I love the literal and catchy lines of Casino Queen and love the aquarium drinker line. It makes sense to me whether or not it did to Mr. Tweedy.

Located at the above link is a review I wrote for Rockbeatstone Magazine. I actually hooked up with the editor of the magazine, James, through ViaChicago. Rockbeatstone is a London-based online rock magazine, and has some really great content.

I'm not a professional journalist, and I had a blast writing the review. After one of the best weeks of my life thanks to Wilco, I just hope I did the band justice!

  4. I recently saw Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, and Ryan Adams opened with a 5-song acoustic set.

I don't see why Tweedy couldn't do the same.

Don't get me wrong, I love Tweedy solo, but I don't think Jeff would do that b/c its not Jeff Tweedy & Wilco, its Wilco. Everybody in Wilco does solo/side projects and I be very surprised to see him draw extra personal attention at a Wilco show (though I agree, it would be sweet if it happened in a vacuum).

My vote is for Arcade Fire -- though it might have to be a double-bill nowadays.

  5. Can I borrow your Dream Theater shirt?

    :lol :lol :lol :worship

Nels hasn't ruined Wilco, Tweedy has.

I couldn't agree more. I also think Scorsese ruined Goodfellas.

93% of all statistics are made-up on the spot.

    :D :D :D

Ever since I've told my friend I was at the Wilco concert, he's made it a point to bring up that they suck every single time I run into him.

I know that guy. He's always 'rockin' that super-cool "Your Favorite Band Sucks" t-shirt under his popped collar, and he signed my yearbook, "Have a good summer fuckface"

Didn't someone say "Nels is essential"...And as for Rock Star posturing I say the world was a lot more fun when there was more of that :pirate .My friends that saw Wilco recently for the first time pointed out how rare it is to see a songwriter at a peak like Jeff is, with a band so tight and focused as Wilco is right now. I think all of the different line ups have their strong points its so fun to watch the evolution.

Nailed it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I agree the newest incarnation of wilco has something to prove by putting out an album in the same category as YHF, AGIB, ST, and BT -- but they are quite possibly the best live band in the world right now (sorry Arcade Fire, you know I love you) because of this lineup. Just listened to a JT interview and he said Pat is as good a musician as Nels and Glenn and he loves the rock star antics. He also called Mikael a 'genuis.' Nels fits in well with the band b/c he is so secure in his abilities he doesn't feel the need to take control over any aspect of the band -- and he loves interpreting other's work. And if anyone doubts the brilliance of my aforementioned opinions, I majored in Pretending to Know What I'm Talking About at YALE, so step off (I also have my own parking spot and drive a Dodge Stratus).

  6. I don't think Jeff's ever offered his side of the story, and given Jay's departure from the band shortly before providing this interview with Kot, this very well may have colored Jay's version of events. For all we really know, Jeff may have said, "Wow, this song is kind of intense when you're high," Jay may have responded, "Yeah, don't get too freaked out," and that may have been the extent of it.

I too have questioned the veracity of mr. bennett with his side of the story. The story seemed completely offered to say what a great guy he was to comfort Jeff in his time of need. Given the timing of the interview it certainly is suspect, although still entirely possible.

  7. Your not crazy, I personally think its their best record.

I can't disagree, but on a given day its AGIB, YHF, ST, BT tied for first -- they're so different its not really a fair comparison.

One thing I am certain of is that AGIB is their most underrated album. Kidsmoke is easily my favorite live Wilco tune, Handshake is a classic and 20 years from now will be a legend of a song. Fantastic pop at the end with Theologeons and Late Greats and Hell is Chrome and ALTWYS hit me over the head one day with their greatness. I used to detest Company in my Back and now I enjoy that too. Its the sleeper Wilco record and no album transports me like AGIB, even when I'm hungover: http://forums.viachicago.org/index.php?sho...p;#entry1071608

  8. I think people's expectations were way too high. They were going to do two SBS songs b/c thats the last record, and they weren't going to sound their best in the SNL studios -- no band does. Its a more awkward venue that is basically removed from the fans -- most of whom are not there to see Wilco. No band is going to be as loose as they normally are with TV cameras all around them, only two songs to perform, and a silent, sitting audience watching. I thought the performance was just OK, but that didn't surprise or disappoint me at all (even though I just saw the band at the height of their powers at the 5 Residency shows). Jeff made it entertaining with the lyric change for Sue and the suit.

Also -- I disagree with all the knocks on SNL. I think this is one of their most complete casts ever and I laughed a lot at last week's show. This cast doesn't have a show-stopper like W. Farrel or C. Farley, but everyone is strong. Of course, some skits are going to suck, but that's inevitable with a live show and only a week to prepare.

All in all -- I'm just grateful to see my favorite band on a stage as large (and relevant) as SNL. I just hope there aren't too many new fans so I can still get tickets :cheers

  9. Many of Guthrie's songs were rewrites of Carter Family songs... (Well, tradition songs that the Carter Family played). Examples: Guthrie's "Linbergh" is a rewrite of The Carter Family's "Cannonball Blues," "I Ain't Got No Home In This World Anymore" is a rewrite of the Carter Family's "I Can't Feel At Home In This World Anymore," "Tom Joad" is a rewrite of "John Hardy," "Vigilante Man" is a rewrite of "Lonesome Day." Even "This Land Is Your Land" has its roots in the Carter Family. They recorded two songs with its melody: "When The World's On Fire," and "Little Darling Pal of Mine." "Hesitating Beauty" is no doubt a rewrite of "LuLu Walls," but that doesn't mean that it isn't a Woody song. That was just how he wrote songs.

I actually found that very informative -- thanks :thumbup

  10. I'm sure this sounds ridiculous to anyone not in my circle of Wisconsin friends and family, but today is in the top ten saddest days of my life. I was 11 when Brett came in the league and 13 when he took over for the Pack and never looked back.

He's probably the person who has given me and my family and friends the most joy out of all the people we haven't met.

  11. I always forget, but SNL really highlighted for me how much different his voice sounds now (as compared to say 10 years ago). It's almost a completely different style of singing. I don't like it as much (I liked the rawer sound), but even as I was thinking that I had to admit he is a much better singer now, with way better control of his voice.

That's so true -- I recently compared/contrasted Jeff's voice on 'Too Far Apart' live at Residency vs. studio. He sings 2-3 octaves higher now on 'Too Far' and the song is twice as good because of it.

  12. If "virgin" watchers came to the conclusion that JT is a pissy artist because he wore the Nudie suit, they weren't really virgins. That suit doesn't excude "pissy" if you've never heard of UT, JT, or Wilco. Lame, quirky, bizarre, or even retarded (as my BIL said), but not pissy.

It might not indicate that he's acting pissy, but it would certainly tell me he had that capacity -- if I didn't know anything about JT or his sense of humor, I would watch SNL last night and think he was probably a pretentious artist.
