  1. I love cap city and disagree that it is a joke tune unless you consider the tunes by the artists that influenced it (beach boys, beatles, van dyke parks, randy newman) are joke tunes too. I think this is very accomplished take on a certain type of song. Not arguing on your opinion of liking it or not, that's your opinion and is valid as any other. Also, i think it gives the record a nice change of pace.

  2.

WILCO IS NOW MY #2 (after Radiohead) BAND! PLEASE DON'T FAIL ME NOW WILCO I NEED YOU!!!

    Wilco loves you baby.

Weird emotions here. First off, took a break from the whole love last night and put on Collapse Into Now last night for 1st time in months and still love it as much as i did when it came out. Got me thinking about their history, the 5 post Bill records and what they were going to do next. Since the CIN came out, ive been of the opinion that it was their best post bill album (and stands next many of the bill era ones) and I still feel that way. Lots of sentiments around that they should have split in 97 but i disagree. IMO, of the 5 records, 3 are great, 1 is ok and one kinda of sucks, and 2 of the greats happen to be the last 2. I was thinking of going back and finding the thread about wilco, rem and radio head having new records this year and then we get this news today.

I dunno, too many good times to count with this band, too many great records, too many great memories but i really don't know know where they were going to go next. I really think they had said what they needed to say as band and it was time. A finalntour would have been nice, the final record I always wanted them to make with Bill would have been nice but, in the end, the records speak for themselves. One of the consistently great bands of all time, it will be always there to go back to.

Soemone asked about the IRS records, get the out of print MFSL remasters of murmur and reckoning. $30 or so on amazon but well worth it. All of the current remasters are too loud IMO.

I was actually thinking this morning that i needed to get my fan club money in for this years single, oh well.

  3. Yeah, my buddy turned me onto drop box. I asked on Friday for him to rip it for me and spent 7 hours saturday waiting before i got an email to check my drop box and there it was, simple as that. Good system and good friend.....and good rip, I think it sounds great.

I posted many pages back after my first listen that i liked it but wasn't ready jump to conclusions but after 6 or 7 listens I'm ready to jump, this record is a monster and belongs with the Bennett era records. I like everything this band has done but have have felt that nothing compares to BT, ST and YHF in songwriting quality, arrangment and production and every subsequent release has confirmed this to me. On all of those records, there's always a song or twomi didn't care for and never warmed up to. TWL? Love em all.

I am a litte worried that it may be a quick burn but i don't think so. My feeling with bands i like is that you cant really judge a record until the next one is out to get some perspective but i have feeling that this is going to stand up as a classic. To that last point, took a break from twl and gave wta a spin and i liked it a lot more than i have in the past, go figure.

With all the worthy love AoA and Sunday morning are rightfully getting, wanted to give some love to a couple of my favorites; Sunloathe, wow, just an incredible, perfectly executed pop song. Capitol city, read some bashing of this as well but this is another gem that for me, along with randy newman reminds me of van dyke parks' song cycle along with the obvious beach boys and beatles influence. This song is so well produced and arranged. I think wilco is the only band going that can pull off songs like these, with their obvious influences snd still make them sound like you are hearing something fresh. Standing O ( Saturday nights alright for wilco), aside from the blatant balsy rip of Elton John, you wonder if they came up with the riff and someone said, this is a rip off of Elton john and someone else said, "fuck yeah it is" and just went with it. This may be the song that will burn the easiest but it will be a blast live.

Thats all i got. If you haven't heard this yet, what are you waiting for? The 27th i just some artificial date created for buzz and marketing; life is short, listen to wilco.

  4.

I didn't quite mean it that way, because I enjoy the passages. I especially like that moment around the 4 min mark when the 4 note guitar comes in and then the drums kick in.

Thanks for the feedback. I definitely need to get Animals. I guess I should wait for the remaster that will probably be on sale first week. I kinda think records like these that have long recouped their costs many times over should sell at lower prices than newer material, but then I'm sure there's the cost of remastering and the general 'worth of one piece of music compared to another' defense.

That may be the best moment in the floyd cannon. Don't mistake my opinion above for a dislike of animals, I really like it, just don't think it's as good as the the other great Floyd record.

One warning about remasters: without hijacking this thread as this deserves it's own topic, and there may be one if I remember right, there's this plague if you will of old records, every time they get remastered, get remastered louder and louder destroying the dynamic range. Go to YouTube and search "loudness wars" for complete explanation. Theres a great video that explains why this is done. Long story short, go on amazon and find a remaster from the 90's, you'll be glad you did. Here's a wiki entry on the topic:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_wars

  5. Just got through first listen. I can rarely make extreme statements, good or bad, on a record after one listen and that is the case with TWL as well but i will say that i have a feeing i am going to really love this thing 10 listens from now ( if not sooner.) Not one song where it like, ugh, this sucks and more than half the thing i really liked right away.

This is really what i was expecting out of this line up with WTA but didn't get. I remember the first couple wta listens, expecting something great and wondering why it wasnt there. Not this time.

Agree with all the points made prior, John is off the hook and the keyboard playing is as good as it's been since Jay left. Bring on merriweather post in 3 weeks.

  6. This is pretty well known but WYWH was originally going to be Shine on on 1 side and Raving and Drooling (Sheep) and Gotta Be Crazy (Dogs) on the other. The concerts following dark side in 74-75 had a 1st set of those 3 songs, usually r and d, gotta be crazy and shine on, second set of dark side and an encore of echoes. Pretty cool that a band could do a first set of all unknown material. Anyway, when they got to recording wywh the disconnected nature of the sessions gave Roger the idea split shine on in half and to write the three songs that they put in the middle to reflect the state the band was in and save the other 2 for the next record. Gilmour at first objected to the idea but Roger got his way and we ended up with wywh, the go to record in the Floyd cannon as far as I'm concerned. I don't really agree with your assertion that it is an ep's worth of material stretched, shine on is a pretty well crafted song, just because it is long and there are long parts with no vox, it dosent mean they were just noodling, the instrumental passages are very well written and arranged. The other 3 are pretty concise.

When it got time to do the next record, Roger came up with the whole animals concept, changed some of the lyrics to the already written songs and wrote pigs and pigs on the wing finish it of. I like Animals but IMO it is the least of the big 4 Floyd records. Don't really care much for pigs and Rick doesn't have a real prominent role on the whole thing. If anyone saw the waters dark side tour in 06-07, the first set closer of sheep was off the hook.

For a great document of the tour as i described above, check out the ivory wynne recording from '75, i forget the date. I'm pretty sure it's an Aud recording and might be the best aud i ever heard. At that point, they had only had have a cigar written and played it in the middle of shine on, with Dave and Roger screaming the vox, awesome.

  7. Yeah, ive read the priore book. I find it funny that he is still given credabilty given that all his theories prior to bwps were that smile was going to be half instrumental. It always seemed obvious to me that the reason half of what we had was instrumental because either the vox werent finished or the bootleggers didnt have them. To that point, im still holding out hope that this release will have full 66-67 vox on worms and child but I think thats a long shot.

  8.

Hope he goes full Fredo Corelone in Godfather Two: "I'm smart!!! Not like everybody says!!!" I'm of the opinion that by wrecking momentum on Smile, Love single handedly did more harm to his band's legacy and potential than anyone else in the history of music. Ultimately, Brian was going to have emotional issues regardless but if Love would have just trusted Wilson's genius not only would we have had Smile in 67 but what would have happened after Smile w/a confident Wilson. Still what we got from them from 67-73 was very impressive, I like the Surf's Up album as much as anything.

    --Mike

67-73 is actually the BB period i listen to most. The albums are flawed but there are some incredible tunes there, maybe some of the most under appreciated rock records ever.

I would agree with your assessment of mr. Loves effect on smile and their career. I would love to visit the parallel universe where smile came out in Jan 67 and how pepper would have been viewed. I always thought that in its time, smile would have been appreciated for what it was and pepper would not have been viewed as ground breaking but im not as sure now. I mean PS did come out in its time and wasn't appreciated, at least in the states and smile would have been much more difficult. Although, it could have ushered in the height of the psychedelic era and been revered so who knows.

All i know is, I'm glad it got finished 7 years ago, BWPS totally exceeded my expectations and now this box is the icing on the cake. When i got exposed to smile in 1990, Id never had bet the story would end this way.

  9. How great are the Mike Love linear notes going to be on this thing? Is he going to go the revisionist route and claim he was in favor of it, is he going to eat crow, this might be worth the price of admission alone.

    --Mike

Funny, i saying this exact same thing to a friend yesterday except the chances of him eating crow are none. This might be up there with the biggest loads of crap ever written. Cant wait to hear how he was the supportive voice but brians demons just didn't allow him to finish. This is going to be good.

  10.

seemed to me that he was clean some in 88 and 89 and 90 and started after Brent died. I remember him on some TV special with Carlos Santana and thats when he was sober.

Yeah, thats what.i thought, it just makes me sad watching all those vids from 89 and seeing how engaged he was and how clearly he was having fun and then to see how fast he slipped, just ashame.

  11. I saw that YouTube channel the other day, good stuff. I'll check that 94 show out. I have been looking at some of the 94-95 era vids on YouTube and it's kind of amazing to me that they just kept the bus going. I understand they felt obligation to everyone, office staff, fans etc to keep it going but how it was fun with Garcia in that condition is beyond me, it looked like he was about die (which he was i guess.) Glad i was at least able to see him in good shape.

Kind of morbid question but does anyone know when he got back on the shit? Guess I'm curious because from what I've read, the coma experience made him never want to go through that again and obviously at some point the demons got to him and that changed. Curious how long he was able to go before his playing really started to deteriorate and if the rest of the band tried to address it. Also read that one of the reasons Bruce left was because he was using.

  12. i did 25 or more shows in 89 and 90 and i think summer 90 is even better than 89 and thats saying something.

I cant say enough things about Cal Expo 90 all three shows. they were pumping better than ever.

88 was a great year as well

once brent died it was over. there were a couple of decent shows with hornsby but nothing TOUCHED brent dead

Wish i saw them more, embarrassed to say i only saw them twice, 9/9/88 and 10/19/89. Tickets were always such a pain in the ass to get and i got heavy into alternative and kinda left that stuff alone for 10 years. If i liked them then the way i like them now, i probably would have ended up on tour. Makes me pissed i missed those 90 shows.

I agree with the other post above about gems from 91, i love what Hornsby brought to the sound, makes me wish Brent had a grand piano instead of that electric thing. I love Brent but some of his songs, to me, are downright awful. Just a little light and we can run jump to mind.

I downloaded sbds from 7/8 and 7/9/95 recently and was actually surprised that they weren't that bad, not great, but listenable.

I agree with the slow groove thing about Furthur, i don't really enjoy listening to them after the fact but live, i think they're really good. Friday and sat at the tower last march were outstanding.

  13. I think ive said it before but 87-91 is my fav dead period. What you loose in jerry being off from time to time, you more than make up for in a fuller sound imo. They're like freight train. I get why people may not like that but for me, nothing better. I hope spring 90 is next after this e 72 box although with a few exceptions, there are matrixes/ultramixes out there for most of that tour that'd be hard to top.

  14. I think I may have to cancel my order and get one of those. Btw, I checked out thesmiley board and there was a thread about what is now the best umreleased album. Alot of talk about lifehouse which pointed me towards a real comprehensive book on the who from to 73. Cannot wait to readit, love tje lifehouse period.

  15. If you bought at Amazon and the price comes down again before it is released, they will generally charge you the lower price.

Yeah, saw that. Never did a pre order before, do you know if they charge your card right away or when it ships?

My 3rd BB box as well. Pretty funny, i have 3 sinatra boxes, will be 3 BB's and 4 or 5 more of other artists.

  16. Thanks Aman, thought I could count on you to update the thread when it became official. This thing looks sweet, so glad the original 12 page booklet is included. Gonna be a good fall with TWL and this.

  17. that photo on the link i posted initially shows horn as not aging too well. i would definitely go see them if Downes was playing in the band. he's a powerful player. oliver wakemen is a nonentity from what i can see. i'm a drama fan too, so this seems interesting.

Not sure I have a ton of interest in seeing them, I think they kind of douched Jon. It's one thing to replace a key member when they are gone or they decide to leave, it's another to do it because they are sick and you want to tour, just my opinion.

I would be shocked if this thing is even half listenable but I'll give it a shot.

  18. I was huge yes fan in the 80's but was pissed I missed the glory years in the 70's. 90125 tour was the second show I ever saw. Now, the only 3 records I would think to listen to are going for the one, drama and 90125. Not that the troika of yes album, fragile and ctte aren't great but I just wore them out and have little.interest. I have seen video of this jonless lineup and thought it was kind of a joke but being a drama fan, this record with horn producing and geoff downes in the band has my interest up a little. Would've been cool if they they totally replicated the drama lineup and had horn sing imo but my guess is that his voice.must be shot or he has no interest in singing since its been so long.

  19. I've never been that fond of Disney Girls, but there is a video on Youtube of Bruce doing a solo version of it that is pretty cool.

Yeah, it's sappy, no doubt about it. Wouldn't usually be my thing but I dig it for some reason.
