  1. Maybe. Maybe not. Insurance companies won't always insure athletes with a history of injuries, especially a recent history. In a case like Sheets, if there was insurance, the policy either didn't cover much, had high deductables, or high premiums. Most likely the insurance wasn't worth it, so they didn't buy any. They made a high risk investment and it didn't return. It happens a lot. At least it was only one season.
  2. Buck Showalter will be the new Orioles field manager. His misery begins Tuesday.
  3. They said they needed to restock their system with prospects, but yes, I think the thought of handing out a 7/8 year contract to a pitcher scared them off. They could have kept him for this year, but they acquired Halladay and signed him for four years. In relation, the Phils have an agreement in place to acquire Roy Oswalt from the Astros, but are awaiting a decision from Oswalt as to whether he'll approve the trade. It's looking as if he will, but will want to be accomodated contractually. He either wants his 2012 option picked up or an extension. Either way the Phils will stick to their phi
  4. Or had Cliff Lee traded away after owning the Yankees in the World Series.
  5. He got the story off mlbtraderumors site. The word "acceptable" came from a blogger who pulls from various sources and interprets.
  6. Especially when one has large accounts in the banks. There was a quality prospect with the A's who retired in Sping Training so he could train to be a priest. Not all athletes love what they do. Some do it professionally because they can - so they can make good coin for awhile. Some love playing, but don't take it all so seriously. For a guy like Bonderman, he's been through extensive physical rehab and has to work hard just to be able to pitch. I think he's just giving a certain perspective of his mind when he takes his future (including family) into consideration. Talk to him in a month
  7. Shane Victorino to the DL. Phils call up top prospect Dominic Brown.
  8. D. Lee says he staying put, no waiving of the no-trade.
  9. Looks like the Orioles are gonna play .100 ball the rest of the way. So who is the next Scott Boras-advised-#1-pick-to-be college player the O's get to overpay next August?
  10. Dan Haren's Angels first start ends with a hard shot by Kevin Youkilis.
  11. The D'backs received an established player and three prospects for Haren. If the Phils trade Werth, they'll try to get something similar, except they won't get as much because Werth is a pending FA and Haren is under contract. For all the talk of getting a starter, the Phils need another arm or two for the pen. I'm hoping Philadelphia holds on to Werth just for his right-handed bat. I believe Dominic Brown can provide decent production right away, but he'll be one more left-handed stick alongside Howard, Ibanez and Utley (when he returns from the DL). Rollins and Victorino switch hit, but neit
  12. Werth moonlights for Vince McMahon as well.
  13. Decomposing Jayson Werth Romance Novel Cover Model On a Hot Streak Chris Isaak Phase The Blue Jays Never Knew His Werth Oriole Draftee, Age 13
  14. Best affordable talent, yes. Better than the expensive Jayson Werth, no. Corey Hart left las night's game with an injury. It isn't supposed to be serious, but neither was DeJesus'.
  15. Ok. Suffering a mild thumb sprain tonight may reduce his chances of being dealt this month. Tonight I went to the local minor league team the Kinston Indians, an advanced A team. Their left-handed hitting left fielder is a kid named Bo Greenwell, son of Mike. He's got a high average, but no homers in the 2 weeks he's been there. I tell you one thing, that boy Bo can rip the hell out of a foul ball.
  16. MLB to implement HGH blood testing in the minor leagues effective immediately.
  17. David DeJesus may be the best player available, factoring age, salary, cost of talent, can play center, bats left, can hit at the top of the lineup, consistent contact hitter with a little pop and speed, plus he's not going to be a free agent at season's end.
  18. Oh, I'm down with you on the preference in Wilco DVDs. I love the Jones documentary, but I had always watched it in analog, so when I switched to a much larger digital, certain things jumped out at me. Mostly where I got distracted in the close-ups of Kot and Grier. The mixture of lighting and film make it look these guys have a rare skin disease. It sounded better on the new tv, but I may just watch it on the computer from now on - or, over time, just adjust myself to the difference.
  19. I don't have a problem with Jones or his vision, but I'm not sure he pulled it off as best he could. Jones is a photographer and this was his first film. Surely, his inexperience caused him to make mistakes. I watched Don't Look Back on the very same tv and that 45 year old film looked fantastic. I like grainy, but quality is important, even when in a production featuring imperfections. I don't require slick and polished music or movies, but, at times, the flaws in the Jones flick distracted from the flow of of the story and music.
  20. I'll take this - an out-takes addition, but fuck the Blu Ray. It won't help enhance shitty film. I watched the DVD on a brand new tv with excellent resolution a couple months ago, and it was "splotchy" in several places, especially on close-ups of people's faces. It was horrible and disappointing. Blu Ray enhances digital quality, not bad lighting and film-making.
  21. Ron Santo was vintage today: On Jayson Werth's beard: "He'd be doing better if he shaved it off. It's too heavy - it's weighing him down." When Carlos Marmol was on the verge of blowing the game, but still had a chance to save it, Pat Hughes said, "The Phillies are down to their last out." Santo mutters, "I'm down to my last out." Marmol did, of course, blow it. Santo spent the rest of the game beside himself. "Oh jeez. You can't do that. Jesus Christ. Oh jeez."
  22. If the Cubs don't promote Sandberg, they may lose him to another organization. His no-nonsense approach would fit in nicely in Atlanta.
