  1. oh, so I totally forgot another reason I hate You Never Know...that George Harrison guitar riff is SUPER cheesy.

Anyway....the "two Nels guitar solo songs per album" thing has been going on since he joined the group. I hope they give him a little more too do this time around..he's such a talented guitarist.

I viewed it as a sort-of homage myself ;) . With regards to the use of Nels, it's something I've thought about before (as I'm sure many here have). With The Whole Love, I'm hoping they have found somewhat of balance. I thought the strongest songs on SBS were carried by some of the climbing guitar freakouts and on WTA that was reduced to little flourishes or, especially in the case of One Wing, build-ups that are never resolved, so to speak. I have listened to the new tracks performed at Solid Sound, in addition to I Might and of course, the teaser. It seems they may have hit a groove in this area. With the number of songs reportedly written for this album (I've heard between 20 and 60[!]), I trust the band was able to pick out 12 pretty tasty morsels that are sequenced nicely. Also, 1:23 - 1:35 in the video: :blink

  2. Stumbled upon this video online and traced it back.

So, here is Wilco's "artist page" on the VH1 website:

    http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/wilco_1/artist.jhtml

Under the Music Videos headline there are a couple videos including a pro-shot live performance of Kicking Television. Just curious as to whether anyone knows what this was shot for? If I'm not mistaken I believe KT was originally going to be a concert film as well but the idea ended up being scrapped. Might this be some footage from that? Judging by their haircuts and the fact that the video was posted January 3rd, 2006 it seems to be right after AGIB was released.

  3. The kids and I have been on an Arrested Development jag of late...Brennan & Alissa were young enough when it was new that it's all new to them. It doesn't seem to have aged a bit, in spite of having many political references. But then, does the world of politics ever really change, other than the faces?

What a fabulous show, and so great to watch the kids rolling with laughter over Buster & the seal, Gob's magic, etc.

I've been going back and re-watching all the episodes again after a little break. Still sharp!

  4. Hey all! I've really enjoyed the "Now Playing (insert month/year)" thread on here the past couple years and awhile back I created a facebook group dedicated to a similar idea. It's sort of turned into a communal spot for posting youtube videos, band pages, album streams, blogs, reviews, and everything in between. We've got about 125 members so far but in an effort to increase the variety of sounds the group members are exposed to I thought I'd invite my friends from the VC community to join up if you wish!

The group name is just "Ear & Now" if you wish to search, otherwise this link should take you in the right direction: http://www.facebook....53&notif_t=like

It's been a lot of fun seeing what everyone has been listening to and I hope you'll consider joining up and not regard this as some sort-of spamming, or self-promotion (It's just a facebook group. In fact, YOU could use IT for self-promotion ;) ).

Here's a link to the accompanying Youtube playlist which compiles all the posts people make on the group's wall and sort-of streamlines it: http://tinyurl.com/3m6zskk

    Thanks!

    Alex

  5. Well it's official. I've become fully addicted to Kurt Vonnegut. After reading Slaughterhouse-Five about a year a go (and really enjoying it) I moved on to some other things, forgetting how great it was. Then, about a week ago I picked up a copy of Player Piano and was absolutely blown away. Before I had even finished it, I placed an order on Amazon for Cat's Cradle and The Sirens of Titan. As of today I have torn through all 3 of them, finishing each within 24 hours. I bought Galapagos awhile back but I think I'm going to give myself a little break on Vonnegut for now. I should be receiving Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections" in the mail today or today and I've heard good things. Has anyone here read it before?

  6. What if Red Stripe came out with a "White Stripe" seasonal? Would it be funny if fans of The White Stripes (or any Jack White project for that matter) took an interest in it?

It wouldn't be surprising, but I can see how some would find it sort of funny. Either way, are we debating the merits of the humor in whether or not a beer was potentially/coincidentally named with a rock group's name in mind? Yes.

It's a wonderful beer. I play in a group called Foxtrot and we had quite a few laughs while enjoying it. I will keep the bottle for as long as I can. The closest we'll likely ever come to being on the same bill as Wilco :flirt

  7. Yeah the interviewer was a little off-putting to begin with. But I think it's important to realize that he is a radio DJ. A radio DJ who lives in Hawaii, year-round. The interview itself was nice and he did seem genuinely honored/excited/etc. to be sitting down with Jeff. Seemed to wander all over the place but again, that's probably just the nature of the man. It's why most of us opt only to vacation in places like Hawaii...brotha.

  8. I really like the contrasts and back-and-forth between the fuzzed out bass and bouncy organ/bells. If this is any indication of how this record plays out I'll be pretty happy. The screaming guitar riff fits in just right. I think SBS was a bit of a Nelsgasm at times and that WTA really pulled back on some of that excellent guitar work (a bit too far, perhaps). Hoping it's peppered in to my liking on The Whole Love ;). Overall I think it's a great song! Not overly adventurous, but considering it's the first single released I'm assuming it's one of the more accessible tracks on the record. I've found myself playing it more often each day.

  9. Echoing a few others here. I went ahead and pre-ordered the deluxe CD (I think I may prefer that cover as a side note) so I could have the bonus tracks, booklet, etc. Considered going with the vinyl but after reading through this thread a bit I decided to give myself an excuse to get over to the Electric Fetus once it is released. The pre-order has definitely caused a jump in my anticipation though! Come on Sept. 27!

  10. It's not really a good idea to post here asking for officially released Wilco tracks. If you do a search, I am sure someone has posted them out there somewhere.

Sorry A-Man, I understand this is a sort-of sensitive deal. I thought I might give it a shot having just purchased the vinyl (in many ways, specifically for the previously unreleased tracks). I was a little disappointed to find it lacking a cd copy/code for digital download. Just wish I could carry the tracks around with me. The pains of modernity! :blush

  11. Hey sorry to bring this thread back from the grave but I recently purchased a new copy of the Kicking Television vinyl set and would love to grab the additional songs in a digital format :music . Has anyone ripped them from the record and would be willing to send a PM my way? If I had the ability to do so I would I do it myself but alas, my old turntable just can't make it happen.

  12. 1: I was 12 years old when Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was released, so forgive me if I'm a little late to the party. I believe the first time I heard Wilco was through a friend of mine, my junior year of high school. So that would be... 2007? His older brother had given him a couple of their records. He played a few songs for me one day and was talking them up quite a bit. I wouldn't say I was instantly hooked but I was instantly curious. I remember describing the little guitar solo at the end of Theologians as sounding like a theme song to an old video game (full disclosure: I was possibly a little stoned). Theologians was probably the first song that I really dug and soon after we both learned to play IATTBYH. It was not until my senior year of HS that I really expanded my musical palette and Wilco was a big part of that. A Ghost is Born got me fully hooked, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot turned me into an ardent supporter and defender, and from there I was able to work my way through the back catalog with some perspective and appreciation for the growth in each one.

2: A much shorter response. October 2nd, 2009 at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul, MN. I was right up front, and it was wonderful.
