  1. What a great show. The progression of the set I thought was awesome. What I see as the more tight, clinical, edgier (but super awesome) selections on the front end, moving to the campfire jam of "Be Not So Fearful" and a sweet dedication to Sue ITMWLY to wrap... Whew. Not much of a cryer, but...

And Panthers. Didn't know til now it was a first, but it was a standout to me. God, Glenn is good.

  2. I love this band. Been a fan since the relative beginning, and this is my favorite of their work. This is wonderful music. They cut out a lot of the preciousness (minus a few 25c words that work really well) and still have really solid and moving lyrics. I love this album start to finish... really... every song. I like the June Hymn and February Hymn the most. In fact February has a hint of the original recording a of Bob Dylan's 49th Beard.

  3. YAY!!! The last one is in my top 5 for the last couple years. I can't seem to get sick of it. It was decisively less country/rootsy than all of his previous solo and DBT work, but super awesome nonetheless IMHO.

I took my wife and a group of friends to see him a few months back at The Double Door in Chicago. We went early for some cocktails, and sat in the basement, and ended up sitting right next to Jason and the band. Seemed like a nice enough group of guys. Anyway, we were sitting there and all of a sudden we hear this rattle and a huge THUMP. We looked over and a man had fallen all the way down the stairs, hit his head HARD, and was out-cold. His daughter, who was pretty wasted, was SCREAMING, the guy was bleeding all over the floor, she was saying that he was dead... it was like a really bad dream. Someone came over and couldn't feel a pulse, 911 was called immediately, and got there in about 10 minutes. He wasn't dead, but was having seizure-like symptoms. By this time he was out cold for quite a while, and fully motionless. The EMTS came, secured him, and took him away. The daughter was SO irate and inconsolable that the police that were call may have arrested her (can't confirm, but I think they did)

To make a long story boring... all 8 of our friends (pussies) left because it was so traumatic (which it kinda was). Refusing to have that be the last thought in my head before I went to sleep, my wife and I stayed and had a great time. He played all his old DBT standbys, and a great selection of his newer work. It was a great end to the night. He did passingly mention that he had gotten word that the man was going to survive the fall.... great news.

    Thanks for listening!!

If anyone has ties to that camp... I'm sure that everyone would want to know how that poor fella is doing.

  6. well, fwiw i thought I'd share some initial thoughts.

I think reviews have been a tad harsh, some have labeled this record as being uninspired or lacking passion, and I don't necessarily get that. Making an album with 75% pleasant soft rock doesn't mean it is uninspired, I actually find it to be reassuring and comforting. Man between Boh and the Grand Archives there is some sweet 70's AM vibe out there (which is right up my alley).

My biggest criticism (which holds true for most bands these days) is that Boh should have stuck with the 10 song album, because the last track and On My Way Home kind of go nowhere.

Also if you are a lyric person then this is not for you, and likely Boh was never for you, because lyrically it is kind of lacking.

I think the strenght has always been capturing a mood/emotion, which this album has those moments.

I really dig this band, they seem sincere/genuine.

I agree with this. I like this album. I like it more than the last and less than the first. But I like it more than I thought I would have sighting this board. Seems plenty inspired to me.

  7. caught the last period -- two zip hawks and it wasn't at all nerve wracking. Though, since I am on the road I am stuck watching ESPN waiting for highlights. Do they even know hockey exists??

This is a good matchup for the Hawks. The Sharks are like a bigger, slower version of the Blackhawks. They cant keep up so far, and are not aggressively fore checking like they would need to to slow the Hawks down. They're a good team, but we've got their number. Hawks in 5.

  8. Thanks for the heads up.

    IDK about WAY better though...

It has to be fabulous to be WAY better...

I don't say that lightheartedly. I'd put my money on it. Try it, and let me know. I'd be surprised if you didn't like it better. Of course it is a matter of taste, but to me, it is not even close. IMO it is the BEST Irish whiskey that I have had. We used to order it from overseas and get gouged on shipping. Now we can get gouged at Binny's!

  9. I don't know how old you guys are, but I'm guessing pretty young in your independent lives. This is just my opinion, but, as much as I'm sure that you love your parents and family, you NEED to do what makes you happiest... not what will appease the people in your family. You have to live every day with your partner, and as you get older, have kids, your OWN family will be the most important thing you have... exponentially. Of course, the conversations need to be made with the little lady, and the parents need to be talked to, but there will probably be no notarized contractual concessions. So if you love her and she loves you truly, THAT is most important. They don't have to fully embrace her right now. Nor does she. The softening will come with time. And it will. She will make compromises, if nothing else, because she has to, and so will your family. Especially if they WANT TO SEE THE GRANDKIDS! Don't give up the love of your life (if it really is!) for anything your family thinks. If THEY love YOU they will come around. And as for your girlfriend, there will come a time where she will get over herself, and take one for the team, if truly LOVES YOU. that too will come with time.

I really doubt this would be the case if she cares for you as you do her, BUT if she refuses any compromise with the family, and is unwilling to be miserable with your family during important family events, such as holidays, and is unwilling to participate at all in the family that she doesn't like, the she needs to go... not because of the actions themselves, but that those actions are a symptom of a larger issue: SHE DOESN"T LOVE YOU. PERIOD.

  10. I sort of feel like the broad brush has been pulled out here. Yes there are plenty of new fans being drawn to the Blackhawks by the great work of John McDunough and his marketing campaign, and the talent of the team. If you run a good program you should always be attracting new fans, and that is the case again, considering the large market.

HOWEVER... MUCH of the immediacy of the flooding back of the fan base, is not due to bandwagoners, but (at the sake of sounding over-dramatic) a healing of wounds, and the righting of so many wrongs dumped on the Hawks alumni and fans. If you don't live here, you can't possibly understand how the fans were alienated for SO many years. Bill Wirtz believed that WINNING THE STANLEY CUP WOULD COST TOO MUCH MONEY. He traded away all of the fan favorites and stars for financial reasons, didn't honor or recognize the great players of the past of this franchise, generally wouldn't pay for a coach with a resume, but settled for former players like Dirk Graham and Denis Savard (no offense, fellas, love ya), FIRED PAT FOLEY, blacked out home games, gouged for beer at the Stadium that HE distributed himself (the Wirtz family is a huge liquor distributing family, along with the Jacksons (see Jesse))...the list goes on and on and on.

There is no coincidence that as soon as the old man died, the franchise did an IMMEDIATE 180. This cannot be all new fans. In fact, I was the biggest Blackhawks fan on the planet... really. I grew up working at the "home" golf course of the Blackhawks of the late 80's and early 90's (I know, good for me. But write this for context). I knew So many of them Larmer, Goulet, Pang, Savard, Presley, Peluso, etc., and went to 10-20 games per year at the old Stadium. But after they traded Roenick and Belfour, I was done. I vowed to NEVER watch a game or pay for another ticket until old man Wirtz was dead. And I didn't. I'm glad to be back! And I know I'm not alone. Many of the old guard have returned. Seems that if any fan base has paid their dues it IS the Blackhawks fans. There has been a lot of emotional equity invested in the Blackhawks by the fans.

  11. I love this show as well. Sunday's Show was so intense, I had to go outside and get some fresh air when it was over... my heart was a' flutterin'. I kind of thought that Hank was a douche last season. Just sort of a meat head, but I've changed my tune. He seems to be the only guy that aims for doing the right thing. Those twins are scary, dudes. But I can't see them writing Hank off the show. He's just starting to get interesting! And my god!... Anna Gun is just gorgeous... at least to me, she is. I'd even watch Dancing with the Stars if she was on it.

  12. OK. If nobody else is gonna... HOLY SHIT! YOU SEE WHAT THE BLACKHAWKS PULLED OFF??!! That was amazing. HISTORY. For you older Hawks fans, it kind of reminds me of that '89?? , last game of the season against the Maple Leafs, where if they won they were in and if they lost they were out. The game was tied with little time left in the third, and Troy Murray stole the puck away from the defenseman in their own zone and scored to put them in the playoffs. Anybody remember that? I think I got it right, but it was a long time ago. What a COMEBACK!

  13. That scene where Clarke Peters (don't know his characters name yet) is marching down the road in the Mardi Gras indian gear to visit his old friend is one of those classic David Simon scenes that is really just spellbinding and haunting. So great.

I like it so far. It is kind of what I thought it would be... resilient people in extraordinary situations, dealing with the day-to-day of their world...NOT overly dramatic. Which is, as stated above, classic Simon.

that scene was great, but made me laugh.

  14. 8. everyone at VC agrees with me so I can't be wrong!

#1 combined with #6. DO IT!! In this economy we need to look to other sources to invest our money. It always works for me.

Try a parlor guitar for sitting on the couch. Great tone and comfortable if you get the right one. I like mine, but it's just a Blueridge, so I doubt it will go up in value. Check out Froggy Bottom. Not vintage, but quite lovely.
