  1. Sweet Fancy Moses. This is the most sordid story. Not just an affair; not just asking an aide to lie; not just a fun baby; not just cheating on his wife who was terminally ill with cancer; not just using campaing funds to pay off the mistress; not just speculating who his wife's terminal illness could help his campaign.

Now he reportedly punched his wife.

    Holy shit...

Yeah. Wow. If I'm honest, none of the early information was surprising to me at all. He, like SO MANY men of his age, had a break and let his dick do the talking. Then maybe fell in love with the new pussy (pardon the parlance) cuz she was younger, and she made him feel younger and powerful, and was also there to help him grieve his, at the time, nearly terminally ill wife. And then desperate to win, he totally exploited his situation by using his wife as a campaign tool. And then did what he had to do out of desperation to cover it all up for personal preservation, when it was about to leak. This is awful stuff, but I get it. I'm sure that says lovely things about me, but I do get it.

If he was also beating his wife...FK that guy. That puts a whole new spin on it for me. That takes the whole runaway train angle out of it for me, and then all you got left is a real POS. I mean, Jesus.

  2. Proponents of pareidolia would argue that having the supposed backward "lyrics" up on the screen encourages your brain "hear" those words.

    Here is an example:

But it's still a lot of fun to do, if you are bored and have the technology.

Would love to know what "Not for the Season" sounds like backwards. If there are any hidden messages it HAS to be on a Loose Fur (Lucifer) album. :devil

    :yay

    Yay, vagina!

  3. My 4 year old boy loves the Beastie Boys...God Bless Him...he tries to do "So Whatcha Want". Classic. He also likes Wilco because he knows I do. I'm not a fan at all of Phoenix (sorry) but his favorite song (he calls it "his" song) is 1901. He puts it in his Fischer-Price MP3 player and walks around the house bobbing his head. And this one came out of left field, but he saw Sting on the TODAY show with his latest, Celtic ensemble playing a song called "Soul Cake" off of his newest CD of winter songs. Man, he just stopped and stared at the TV for the entire song. He doesn't stop for much. So I bought it and we listen to that song over and over in the car.

PS I don't care for Sting or even the Police, really. But that CD is pretty good.

  4. Great review, thanks!...now to find one to test drive...

I was looking for an amp online today and saw one of the reissues at this place in Lincoln Square, Chicago: www.rocknrollvintage.com under "other new guitars" for $995.00. Not too far from where your profile places you. Good Luck!

  5. This. Leno got time to settle in, and Conan should get the same. NBC needs to figure out which guy they want and let the other one go. They're being spineless here.

I'm not sure how long it was after Jay took over for Johnny that the tides turned for Jay. It took awhile. Pretty sure it was longer than 7 months.

Many of you may remember that Jay was getting creamed by Letterman in the ratings for a long time. The network was getting ansy. Then the day after Hugh Grant was caught with that hooker he came on The Tonight Show because he was previously booked. That shot Jay up to #1 and he never looked back. Not saying that Conan needs to be the first to book TIger or anything, but that these things take time. The almighty Jay Leno was once not so, well,... almighty. Takes time to be the king.

  6. yeah, I'm on about a one-every-two-year pace, and even then i can't choose from the high shelf. maybe some day...

This, my friend, is one of the joys of being married with seperate bank accounts.

I finally had a chance to sit down and really play the Tele last night, and I can't thank all of you enough for the hearty recommendation. This is definitely a guitar that my abilities will grow into :lol , and I am positive I am going to have thousands of awesome hours play time on this guitar.

stagerug, get the Tele. It is flippin' awesome, and then we can just turn this into a big Tele appreciation thread.

As I think on it, my pragmatic side is winning over my "need to be different" side, even though they are all great guitars. And for a first guitar, it is a solid choice. (the Tele, I mean) I just don't know. I'm going fishing this weekend in the Keys to get the heck out of the cold. I'm going to be meditating on it while soaking up some sun!!!!!!! :rock :beer :dancing

Edit: I think what I like the most about the Tele is that guitar looks like THE Guitar of my memory. That butterscotch color, with the crooked pickup and that scalloped headstock on top of the maple neck. When I think electric guitar THAT is the guitar I think of. Besides the fact that it sounds great, I think my childish nostalgia is what would draw me to buy that guitar. So much for pragmatism.

  7. Friends, here is famous record of time when Mr Jeff Tweedy made a little chink in his armour of usual style of enigma and ultimate secrecy of plan to follow special pop theory of Mr Stig Anderson as pie in ear for world success. Maybe Mr Jeff Tweedy was in happy time of the schnapps at this moment. Ha ha!

“The way I see it, Abba made Dancing Queen and, from that moment on, every musician who has heard it faces the struggle to come to terms with their own imperfection. Dancing Queen is just so glorious. After some time I have finally figured out how to play it on an acoustic guitar. If nothing else, it means that Abba and I can share just a little common ground.” Jeff Tweedy, Wilco

    Believe! Welfare.

I know what I'm going to request at the next solo show. I Believe!

  8. .

Can I ask why the Creston fell out of the running? I was kind of pulling for that one.

edit to add: oops i got so carried away with my contempt of the Roland cube that I forgot to suggest to keep it around to use with your headphones, and get the full on tube amp for the occasions when you can crank it up.

I was wondering why he would just give me that amp! It is the Roland Cube, and what you mentioned is exactly what I would use it for. When the kids are sleeping I can put the headphones on.

As for the Creston... I think if this were not my first electric it would have been the winner. I think patience and the "play before you buy" mantra won out. Who knows! I may get the bug down the line and grab one of them too. Although I kind of have it mapped out that I can only buy one guitar per annum or my wife will kill me :lol

  9. Let me throw this out there...

I have narrowed my search down to three:

    1. Rickenbacker 360

    2. Gretsch Brian Setzer signature

    3. ...wait for it... the '52 Telecaster reissue

I have been given a small solid state practice amp. "The Cube"?? I can't remember it is upstairs.

Anyway, when I buy the guitar, I'll just take the plunge for a tube amp too, probably.

What recommendation would you give for amps for these three guitars? (within reason) I'm sure as far as what I play jives closely with what most of you do. I will not be jazzing or metaling it up all that often.

  10. I'm going to head to a few stores in the next few days if I can fit it in, but right now I'm considering an American Tele, the '52 Tele everyone is strong-arming me into ( :lol ), and I have to admit I am also intrigued by the '65 Mustang reissue and the Japanese Tele with Bigsby reissue. I'm a sucker for Bigbys, but if I'm going to get a Tele I really want the maple fretboard.

So I'm a mess of decisions, still open to all of your excellent advice ('specially about the Mustang and the Tele/Bigsby), and I'm pretty damned excited about this.

    Hey! What about me???

No, really, just kidding. This thing is on cruise. In my search I am also leaning toward the American Tele line or reissue with the maple fretboard (that is a must for any fender for me)... coincidence?

Anyway, I was at my local GC, and they are flush out of American Teles of any kind. Not one. Must be due to the reordering period that was mentioned. So I didn't get to try them; However, and I am a little ashamed to admit this, but they have had this Gretsch... cough... Brian Setzer model with the TV Jones pickups in there for probably 3 years, and they have slashed the price on it to somewhere near reasonable. I gave it a try. I know nothing about electric guitars as I have mentioned before, but that thing was a beast! Great sound, and seems versatile. I'd have to change the knobs, but a nice looking guitar too. Are any of you familiar? I would love your honest feedback.

Here is my short list thus far for guitars (Some from playing them, some from shallow looks) In no particular order:

    1. Gretsch Brian Setzer priced at $2000 b4 haggling

    2. American Tele Deluze in 3-tone sunburst with a maple neck

    3. Creston custom with go knows what on it.

    4. Rickenbacker 360 Maple or Sunglo

    5. Gretsch Black Penguin (too expensive)

  11. I have a giant, throbbing HBO boner right now!!!!! I love "The Wire" (truly the greatest show ever made... and I love my TV) and I had no idea this was even in the works. I can tell you that this stands to be nothing less than a series that will land somewhere between awesome and totally awesome.

  12. Thank you for the information so far. Keep it coming. This is quite helpful. I have checked in a couple of times today and checked on some of the recommendations. This is such a new learning experience for me.

Does anybody have any thoughts on the Rickenbacher 360? I know the looks are not for everybody, but I love it. Just wondering about the sound. With all due respect, I'd rather not be stuck in the sixties sounding like George Harrison (at least not all the time).

And thank you for bringing Creston to my attention. That is just my style as well. If I can be patient enough to wait, that will definitely make the short list.

Edit: The old telecaster pickup set-up with the 2 single coils with the bridge pickup offset at like a 45 degree angle... what is the purpose of that? Any thoughts? I like the looks of that, but I realize that it is ultimately that sound that I'm looking for. If I did have a custom done, I would consider that set up if it is advantageous.

  13. I have more acoustic guitars than I need, and now Im looking to get plugged in. My best friend from HS and his son are taking drum lessons and jamming with my Martin isn't cutting it.

Let's say you have $2K to spend on an electric guitar. What would you choose and why?

This group I have always found to be very knowledgeable about equipment, and I would like to know what your opinions are. Thanks.

  14. Of bands that I actually generally like... I'll go with "Highly Suspicious" from MMJ.

Although, over time it has almost reached the point of SOO bad that it has become good again in some way. Like there is no logical way that they could have made that song thinking that it was actually awesome, so therefore; it is awesome, kind of thing.

I mean... peanut butter pudding surprise sounds pretty delicious to me...

    Still pretty sucky though.
