Anybody else partial to their version of In My Time of Dying?? As great as their catalog is, I can NEVER get enough of that tune. May even be my favorite.

I only really play the acoustic, and have no real working knowledge of effects or electronics at all, so I have a couple of questions for the board... If you would be so kind. I was at a Tweedy solo show down in Champaign in January, and while he was setting up and strumming his guitar for sound check, the sound coming from it rang very sharp, like and acoustic guitar can when strummed with a flat pick. Then he stepped on a pedal (I believe) and the sound immediately warmed up to the tone we usually hear in his songs. It was such a noticeable difference in the sound... Does anybody know wh

That's my personal favorite. Easy to play on guitar too. I was lucky enough to catch Nash and Crosby sing up in Milwaukee in October for a "Rock the Vote" benefit. "Teach Your Children" was, for me, bar-none the second-best moment of the evening... after watching Jack Black do a face-plant on stage... Not much funnier than fat man go boom. sorry Jack

AGIB (my favorite of the newer sound) BT (my favorite of the older sound) YHF (Who doesn't love this one) ST (many a lovely sad song wrapped in happy casings...clever) SBS (I'm the boy who gets excited...about Nels Cline...yes, I know that is from Summerteeth... save the keystokes) AM (Great collection of country pop ditties) I do enjoy all of them... for me it is hard to rank them.

Good luck on the finger-style! Anyway, I guess I never really answered the question on the strumming pattern. I"ll give it a try..be merciful if this makes little sense. If you are strumming with a pick or your thumb only, whatever, the strum is a normal up/down...The syncopation, or when you hit the strings while you are strumming is something like...down down down up down up...down up down up down up down (after the ellipsis the the riff thingy). I'm pretty sure it is not the strumming pattern you're having trouble with though (or maybe it is, I don't know). It's probably the hamme

Of the songs I've heard that are supposedly on the new album, although not a part of the RS list, is One Wing. Saw them play it at Lollapalooza...that could be considered a standout.

OK. I just checked the DVD. The Intro to the Eugene, OR show has him strumming this pattern on S, YKMCD. This strumming style (the pattern syncopation changes obviously with each song) can be used for all the songs you were discussing above. If you don't like this style, that's cool...but that's how I do it.

Yeah, he is definitely using a pick there. I have seen him play these songs without...I don't use a pick, so I have gravitated towards finger-style anyway, so when I saw him do it I ran with it. If you're willing to give it a try, it really does work!! I'll probably be proven wrong, as usual , but I'm still pretty sure that his version of S,YKMCD on IAATBYH is this strumming style. It has been the one way for me to play finger-style and still have the sound stay true to the recordings/live versions. I promise, I am not making this up. It works dammit!

Hey fellas...I'll do my best to help on this one. I'm pretty sure for the solo version of this song (as well as Remember the Mountain Bed and many current versions of Wait up) he does not use a pick and while his thumb is holding the baseline, his index finger (when needed) is strumming or picking (depending on what is needed) some of the higher strings of the chord he is holding. I guess, kind of like a really sloppy Travis Picking, but not really...I don't know...hard to describe. What I'm expecting from the new Wilco album is more of the same that I have come to expect of Tweedy almost every time he drops a new record...another curveball followed a brief disappointment, and after a few listens, some of my favorite music on the planet. He's done it all along, as if on purpose. Expect something from him...he's gonna burn you. I can't help but see the correlation between this being done now and the live DVD coming out in April. Guess they deprive the Wilco fan base, so everyone is salivating by the release date. Sucks, but bidnis be bidnis. -

That was part of the initial question. I guess I may not have studied the liner notes on the writer's credits for all the UT songs, but did Jay only sing the songs he wrote and Jeff the songs he wrote?...no collaboration? If that is the case, then it makes perfect sense. Because what he plays now seems to be strictly what he sang on the studio tracks. Plus, I guess it would be weird in a way, but they were the bands songs. Kind of like Jesus, etc. Bennett wrote that, but it is Wilco's song. I don't know, some of those UT tracks would be perfect for his solo sets, and it would be nice to

What an impressive debut album. I've been listening to this quite a bit, and is pretty good from front to back which I don't find to be the case all that often. Anybody else like this group? I'm sure I'm behind the curve on this one, but give me a break, my son makes me listen to the Wiggles. I know all the words to "Fruit Salad".

Been a fan of the band for a long time, and I will admit, I REALLY didn't like the album at first. But as an excuse to take a vacation with my wife, we travelled to Seattle in September, with some friends that are super MMJ fans, to check out the city and catch the MMJ show at the FANTASTIC opera house there by the Space Needle (can't remember the name). It was a very Evil Urges heavy show...and after seeing "Highly Suspicious" live (which I previously hated as many do) and LOVING IT!!! It is a GREAT live song. I changed my entire tune on that album. Besides the obvious vocal differences between Farrar/Bragg and Tweedy. I was struck today at an obvious observation that I guess I never grasped...I doesn't seem, by my mild brainstorming, that Tweedy ever seems to play any UT songs solo that he didn't sing on the UT records nor does Wilco play any songs that Tweedy didn't front on the Mermaid Ave. records. Is this because whomever had the writing/arranging credits sung it, and therefore has the overall rights to the song? I always wondered why Wilco never played one of my absolute favorites off of Mermaid Ave..."The Unwelcome Guest"...that

I came across this thread late, but I agree with Analogman implicitly, this was the first thing that popped into my head when i saw it. Not that I am a VC veteran by any means, but considering it was his FIRST POST and his screen name is the name of the magazine, chances are trending early toward spaminess.
