  1. we named ours 'Butchers Blind.'

weve been gigging with it for a few months now, and it feels better than our old band name (the double stops) to me.

but yeah, if you call yourselves 'World Record Players' and dont release a live in japan record, i will be very angry and not support your music. im dead fucking serious.

  2. Yeah, I've heard mixed responses on those things from people 'in the know'. They kind of sketch me out. You can definitely pull power tubes from an amp and effectively make it quieter. I would definitely check with a tech to make sure you do it right, but you can cut your wattage in half by cutting your power tubes in half. This will allow you to drive the pre hotter, while using less volume, and not injecting some other company's attenuator in the chain between your amp and its speaker.

id be scared id get electrocuted or something. my friends old silvertone amp had voltage problems, and when i sang into the mic, it would shock my face. not good for stage presence

  3. JTE is a very classy performer. I saw him on Sunday at the Bloodshot show in Boston and he has the poise and understanding that he is first and formost an entertainer and that he needs to connect to the audience. He writes very good songs as well and is derivitive in the best possible way. Nice guy too. I talked to him for quite awhile.

    LouieB

i agree, great performer. he was kind of a dick when i met him though :hmm

  4. okay, so ive been searching for what kind of gear jay actually used for a while, and noone seems to know what kind of effects. the closest glimpse anyone has had is in IATTBYH in the "two guitars obsolete" scene.

the closest thing ive seen in the form of a gear interview is this:

    http://www.guitarplayer.com/article/wilco-builds-modern/jan-00/6640

has some cool stuff about jays guitars, and that he used 11 gauge strings. still no pedalboard description though. i know he has an ernie ball volume pedal, and he has to have some kind of compressor.

lets try and compile all our knowledge for future jay bennett gear-seekers. (i hope im not the only one)

  5. Don't forget to write off Blue Mountain and The Old 97s, while you are at it.

very true, two very awesome bands from that scene.

I think I might like ACD better than W(ta). Does this make me a bad person?

    yes.

  6. i would like to apologize, once again, to everyone on this board. i was drunk when i posted the picard and locke thing to the wrong forum. i thought it was funny, and that you guys would enjoy it. so, sorry guys. (except for keving, you called me a chipmunk or a monkey or something. i hope i really pissed you off.)

  7. I loved it. I thought it was brilliantly suspenseful throughout. The first scene alone was worth the price of admission, in my opinion. I was aware beforehand that how the film was marketed was not how it was actually going to be. I had heard that much of it was in a foreign language and it really isn't about the Basterds, so I knew what I was getting into. I hope that German fellow gets a best supporting actor nomination - he was perfect.

    yes.. uh, correcto.

  8. i dont get how child friendly wilco merchandise is similar to charter schools or urban gentrification. wilco is a good band, i would want to show my kids (if i had them.) that article sounded interesting at first, but it seems like it was written by a pseudo-intellectual pointing out the obvious.

of course parents have a socio-political influence on their kids! to think otherwise is just completely stupid. this guy is pointing it out like its new or something

EDIT: i just read the above post pointing out the satirical nature of the article. i totally thought it was serious.

  9. 1. You and every other Wilco fan with a guitar and the inclination to write a tune. Get in line.

    2. There are people on this board who have personal contact with Jeff, but they respect his privacy. They aren't going to give out his contact information to their closest friends, let alone someone they've never met who posts a request online.

    3. If you want to get heard, get out there and perform. Work every little venue that will let you play and build a fan base. Make a video and post it on You Tube and hope it goes viral. That's how a lot of musicians get heard these days. And get over the whole, "my stuff is so great someone's going to steal it." It doesn't matter if it's great if no one hears it. Please.

    4. Did you get this idea from watching "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" on Disney Channel?

this was a heartfelt thread. you offer some good advice, but the overall tone of the response was just plain unnecessary.

anyway, i have always wanted jeff to hear our music. the one time i finally got to meet him, i told him his music inspired me to make my own. that in itself was enough for me.

  10. Have tons of experience here...ill try to nutshell it, but it very much depends on in what manner you'll be playing...home, on stage with a band, or solo acoustic in say a coffeehouse...

Basically pickups come in one of 3 types, or sometimes a combination of type (dual source), and anytime you use a pickup in an acoustic its a compromise...most start at around $100

--The UST is piezo-electric material that fits under the saddle and picks up the vibration of the strings, and about 10% of the body...it is by far the most prevalent type of acoustic pickup, because it works...

Brands: Fishman, BBand, LR Baggs, DTAR

Pros: Good output, sounds relatively accurate, decent volume before feeding back Cons: can sound quacky, brittle, will feed back at high volumes, can be tricky to install by amateur

--the sound hole (magnetic) pickup works like an electric guitar pickup in that it detects the string vibration magnetically and sends out a signal...there are several types

Brands: LRbaggs M1 and M1a, Sunrise, Duncan, Dean Markley, Fishman Rare Earth...In my experience the Baggs M1a is the best in this category (Tweedy uses this one matched with a UST)

Pros: Great output, high feedback resistance, easiest to install Cons: Can hum, hard to get proper string balance, doesnt sound as acoustic, more electric/metallic sounding

--the SBT is a soundboard transducer made of piezo-electric material similar to a UST, but attached to the underside of the top and bridgeplate if the guitar...

Brands: K&K (which is very good), Duncan, LRBaggs IBeam, Dean Markley

Pros: Most acoustic sounding, picks up more of the guitars' natural sound, easy to install and find sweet spot Cons: can easily be a feedback nightmare, can sound thin in band setting, least amount of output and they need a preamp

--dual source you can find combos of these with 2 sources, internal mics, and such Brands: Fishman Ellipse or Rare Earth Dual, Baggs, BBand

Pros: Better sound options, better flexibility Cons: difficult install, extra feedback concerns with 2 sources, takes time to dial in and tweek, EXPENSIVE

Based on those descriptions, decide what your needs are and Ill happily give advice on specifics...Ive been an acoustic musician for over ten years, doing installs on acoustics for almost as long, and have personally used nearly all of these products before...

For all of my instruments i use the Fishman Matrix Infinity system...its a UST type pickup with bass boost/cut, tone and volume controls with a discrete internal preamp and the option to add a second source...i can use it in any live situation and it has proven over the long run to be exceptionally flexible and usable...the novice can install it (although tech is a better idea) and it works well with most PA/amps...it is a value at around $130 Fishman Inifinity Matrix

damn, man. that was helpful, haha.
