  1. one of my favorite things a songwriter does is the almighty name drop. they reference a person or artist, immortalizing them in song. i am so enamored with the eminem name drop on sonny feeling, it got me thinking about who jeff chose to name drop throughout his whole career. the only ones i can think of are:

    acuff/rose - anodyne

    d. boon - still feel gone

    and

    eminem - wilco (the album)

does anyone know if he has any other references somewhere?

  2. okay, so does anyone from the mpls area have any idea where we can stay? were looking for a cheap hostel or something. hell, well crash on someones floor. i heard couch surfer is cool, i dunno though.

    any ideas?

also, were passing through chicago for a night. any cool bars or places we should go? know of any cheap places to stay?

we want to get to know these cities, cause were gonna move out of new york someday. hopefully.

  3. ive been searching for the right compressor for a while. dyna comp compressors change the phase of your attack, so it sounds/feels weak. i would say optical compression is the way to go, or those compressors with a "direct blend" control. i just get compression from the tube amp by cranking the power tubes. i will get a new compressor soon though.

this is a good wealth of info: http://amptone.com/

eq pedals allow you to control the signal going into the amp, while compressors get that extra bit of sustain through the amp. you can basically hit the preamp with a stronger signal, which will help the power amp to "saturate" or whatever. im still trying to really get a good sound out of my amp (which is in the shop)

  4. i play with two other guitarists (rhythm), a pedal steel and banjo. any frequency nerds here that could give an evaluation of the ranges these instruments typcially sit in? and from that, any recommendations for a range i could use an eq pedal to get into this range?

i would say all instruments are in the same range, they just tend to blend depending on volume. different frequencies are different tones, or timbres.. i think.

    100 hz (bottom end chunk)

    200 hz (warmth)

400 hz (boost for darkness, cut for more clarity)

    800 hz (trashiness)

    1.6 khz (throatiness)

    3.2 khz (brightness)

  5. Springsteen never left the forefront of cultural importance.

im gonna have to disagree with that. in my opinion, the only recent musical artist(s) to never leave the forefront of cultural importance are the beatles. take brian wilson, for example. he was a big name in the 60's, and then gained relevance again in the 90s, when everyone began citing him as a significant influence. (i read that particular example somewhere, for the record) i feel the same thing is happening to old bruce now. its happened to a lot of artists... dylan, neil young, lots of people all went through "rough patches." (trans? that weird dylan album that had SRV and slash?) just because theyre still making music, doesnt make them culturally relevant/important at the time. know what i mean?

  6. ive heard these guys before, real cool stuff.

but yeah, i feel that the success of the hold steady (who brought springsteen to the forefront of cultural importance) has allowed other bands (lucero, american aquarium, even the killers) to find their voice. im not saying these bands arent original or good or anything (except the killers,) its just that springsteen wasnt "cool" until boys and girls in america came out. its true, i used to hate the guy.

but yeah, check out lucero and stuff too. i definitely wanna catch an american aquarium show.

  7. .. probably the best jay bennett moment ive ever seen/heard. his guitar playing is absolutely perfect. i know this was up on youtube a while back... jeff is wearing a blue collared shirt. does anyone know what im talking about?

i also loved it when he played piano on 'im always in love' at the jay/jeff shows. jay ruled.
