  1. i don't have the rights to what it means. i'm just stating facts! :cheers

I had always wanted to ask Tweedy about it in the few times i have met him after gigs, but the mixture of brew, weed and excitement of meeting him it always slipped my mind. :stunned

Clearly :P but it's now my Sig and I'd deem it uncouth not to ask; you did the work, not me!

    :cheers

  2. I only pay attention to winning teams, or those that interest me due to their being "up and coming" or being on the verge of really doing well. But when I pay attention, I watch nearly every game. And when I don't pay attention, I watch virtually none of them. I would always "cheer" for them (i.e. don't cheer for opponents).

Great case in point -- for a 3 or 4 year stretch from 2003-2007, I watched nearly every White Sox game. Last year I watched exactly zero. Mediocrity = boring.

I love this; why are so many sports fans blind to nuance? (not that anyone here is, just in general) Why can't one be a fan in the way described above? Or in any number of other 'ways' without having to explain AND lose the respect (which you can keep, by the way) of FANS?

I've taken to calling myself an enthusiast, more often than not, just to avoid being pigeonholed as a 'fan' of a team or city, etc, and get all the BS that comes with that.. Case in point, I'm a HUGE Minnesota Viking fan - live and die with them, but I also like the Packers and Bears. Tell that to your typical sports 'fan' and they don't understand, they think it's crazy, they think fan-dom requires mutual exclusivity. It drives me nuts!

Also, I think that sports 'fans', or what have you, who watch every game (not counting football, where it's easy to watch every game) of bad teams just don't have anything better to do. I've also been a life-long Twins fan, and I think I suffered through the 90's enough by rooting for a hopeless franchise. I went to a few games, watched a few others, but I mainly read box scores and caught highlights. Why would I sit there 3-hours a day to watch a bad team get beaten repeatedly? I found better things to do with my time!

  3. Coming back from Florida right after YHF was released i stopped for lunch at a seafood joint going into Mobil AL. In the bathroom they had displayed all the nautical flags and their meaning.

    Yankee- Dragging anchor

    Hotel - Captain on Board

    Foxtrot - In distress

I always thought it a perfect title, if in fact Tweedy used it as code for the making of the record and the state of Wilco at the time. :pirate

I love that! Mind if I use it? :)

  4. who are the geniuses at the nhl that schedule the playoff games? Two games tonight, both start at 7et. Wouldn't it be better for tv, especially when you have one channel broadcasting your games, to stagger the start times? say 6et and 8et? 630 and 830? pretty much any local time between 6-830 is acceptable in my opinion; I don't think anything in that range is unreasonable. And you'd essentially have 2 games on tv instead of 1; how is that not the preferred route? I think nba playoff scheduling (what I understand of it) is ridiculous, catering too much to television with numerous days off between games to ensure Saturday and Sunday have the most intriguing games (or whatever), local start times at random to suit tv, etc.. But, you know, a little bit of that awareness would be all right. It's happened a few times this year, too, with your classic 2-game week-night where you catch the last 10 minutes of the third period of the '2nd' game because it started 30 minutes after the '1st'. I swear the nhl has some real buffoons in leadership positions. Ridiculous.

  5. I made these picks in my own pool of friends and family before the games started, but I'm gonna postnow, late. If you reject them because they're late, I will not disagree with your judgement. I will also not care, cause I could get every series correct and it will all be dead-eye-luck because I watched roughly 7 minutes of nhl hockey this season...:

I will finally start watching the nhl in the playoffs, if I can. I hope I can, there is nothing better in pro sports :thumbup

  6. The elderly

People who wear watches – especially the people who wear watches and then get all huffy and act put upon when you ask the time, every few minutes

Overly precious baby animals who know they’re precious and then try to manipulate you using that preciousness – usually against your will

The guy at work who has to “let me just double check with regards to that” everything – and I mean everything

People who don’t say “thank you” when I hold the door for them, and then act all surprised and offended when I instruct them to go fuck their mothers and/or themselves

The way my toaster never seems to know how to correctly prepare a Pop Tart – leaving it either too cold or burnt, but never just right

Jack Handey is a VC'er? Awesome! I love your stuff. Cracks me up every. time.

Slow people in the passing lane, especially it they have vanity plates.

    Whistling.

    Blow hard know it alls.

My neighbor's raggedy volley ball net that is in the side of the yard that i have to look at. Those lazy bitches DO NOT play volleyball. or mow their grass. or clean their gutters.

Hillbillys. Since when is being an ignorant hillbilly in style? :yucky

I think its because you don't like to see people happy.

  7. me (live in st paul), solace & a few others i can't remember right now.

Nice. I'm moving back to the cities in a month or two; very excited! I'll have to stick around VC for local music info. Any good sites you know of for local music in the region?

  8. Just abandoned A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore ( :hmm ); I was over halfway through it, too. She lost me at... well, a certain plot twist, though she'd begun to lose me well before that.

Moving on, picked up Lit: A Memoir by Mary Karr. Almost done with that and its really good so far.

Can someone please explain to me how to post those nifty book cover pictures?

  9. I agree with kevan about Match Point- definitely underrated among Woody Allen films. Anyone remember Being Human? That would be my pick for "Robin Williams films". I also thought The Visitor was one of the best films of 2008, but I don't think I was alone in that opinion.

While probably not technically underrated, The Visitor certainly deserved more attention than it got. The lead role, who is that guy - richard something...? He's been in everything, this was his first leading role.... (im gonna look).. Richard Jenkins! He was very good.

  10. Today is the first day of free agency this off-season. I read that Chester Taylor signed with the Bears, 4yrs/12.5mil

As a Vikes fan, that stings; I loved what he did for the team and thought he was under-utilized. Terms of the deal are odd to me, as he'll be 31 for most of next season, but, in the near term, I think this vastly improves the Bears, which I'm happy to see (until it impedes my Vikes). Hope he's the #1 guy over there! :thumbup
