Very loosely related to this movie: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/20/opinion/20brooks.html I love David Brooks.

and every word he uses paints a clearer and broader picture of the action. Listening to him feels like watching with your favorite grandfather or something. Listening to him, to me, is more vivid than watching the game.

It appears as though I wouldn't fit into your definition of 'fan', sure. In that opinion, if true, you certainly wouldn't be alone. However, I love sport and competition and hold certain teams in certain sports more closely to my heart than others. I really enjoy the times when I can feel proud of those teams (like the Twins, quite often). I refuse, though, to close my eyes to negative aspects of those teams I love and to follow them blindly. Again, I do not think this makes me better than any other fan; it's just how I operate. I believe 'enthusiast' may more accurately describe how I foll

Well, generally, my post was equal parts sincerity and attempt to raz Yankee fans. Maybe it came across overly-aggressive, if so my apologies. However, regarding my assessment, I stick to it, even though I meant it to be taken tongue-in-cheek. A-Rod is a disgrace and a pariah. I cannot understand how someone could cheer for that guy with such pure, innocent-seeming joy. I can see begrudging appreciation because he helped the team you love. But the over-the-top-embracing-with-arms-wide-open thing you see in the crowd comes off just as phony as A-Rods always been; or at least it does to me. I

I don't see how one could cheer for A-Rod with sincerity and enthusiasm. A-Rod hits a home run and you see 50k+ people degrade themselves by jumping up and down with joy on television. It's jarring. I don't get it.

Head east on Addison until you hit water. Continue east, you're almost there I kid, I kid.

(Dan, since you're clearly a bull and I'd rather not get the horns, allow me to clarify that my tongue is resting in my cheek.)

Nice factoid! Surprising to hear about d3 schools letting kids in who don't meet academic standards. I assume it's not too uncommon, just wasn't my experience. Especially for a competitively non-elite team.

Listening to Vin Scully on the Dodgers radio broadcast tonight. My God. It's been said in so many places and in so many ways and it's generally accepted as true but I have to say that Scully is so much better than any other broadcaster I've ever heard. I subscribe to the mlb audio package and try to catch as many broadcast teams as possible throughout the season. I've heard most, if not all. Scully is simply in a different realm than anyone else. I can't imagine another voice I'd rather listen to: tv, radio, any sport, in history. Comparing Scully to other play-by-play men invariably become

Last night was def. worth the trip from Cincy. We (GF) got to C-Bus at 5, parked in the ramp next to the venue. Grabbed a coffee and went for a nice walk on the outskirts of campus. We were waiting to meet friends for dinner and starving, so hit Mad Mex for chips and a beer, great music selection there (Dylan and Neutral Milk Hotel). Met friends at Eddie George's (their suggestion, not really my type of place). Food was fine, beers flowed. I didn't know the show wouldn't be selling alcohol, that was disappointing, as I had a nice buzz I wanted to maintain. We stopped across from Mershon for a

the crowd disappointed on Jesus, etc.. Awesome show though. Tweedy had some very funny things to say.

#15 St. Thomas and #6 St. John's both won last week, setting up a battle of unbeatens next Saturday in Collegeville for first place in the MIAC and the inside track to a conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Should be 10k+ in the natural bowl for a Titanic struggle! I'd give anything to be there. I'll be more than happy listening to the Johnnie radio broadcast; those guys are better than the announcers of more than a few professional teams. I think St. Thomas has more talent but it's not easy to win at SJU. I think the Johnnies pull out another close one, sa

I agree. I'm probably within 3-5 shows of having heard them all. I've noticed, though, that they hold up well to repeat listens. Surprising the stuff you "miss" even when paying close attention.

Any fans of Radiolab here? If you haven't heard it, check it out: http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/ You can play shows directly from the sidebar on the right. Afterlife, a few shows down, is wonderful. Radiolab scientifically exams different topics. Sleep. Death. Morality. Choice. Chance. If you're willing to commit an hour or two to listen, I'm sure it will grab you.

As far as I'm concerned no day is a good day for espn.

Brett Favre, Green Bay Packers (P): Although Favre is on the injury report with three body parts listed (foot, knee, ankle), by now we know his leg would literally have to be falling off for him not to play. Favre's probable designation confirms the Vikings' plan to start him Sunday. The limited practice all week is no doubt their means of protecting their quarterback, who celebrated his 40th birthday this week. Many happy returns, Brett. This appeared yesterday on espn.com

I live in Cincy now. There aren't any games in my area I'd like to see in the OAC, are there any schools in other conferences near Cincy that would be worth a trip? Sounds like DePauw's conference might be close... Gags is a beauty. I called him up randomly for a paper I was writing my first year there and he was more than friendly and forthcoming. We talked for about 10 minutes. I wish I would have joined the football team, only problem would have been that I sucked at football. I would join if I could do it over though. I think Gags will be around for a while. He pretty much always s

I have read it. I loved it (not surprisingly). Too bad they didn't write a book when we won the national championship in 03.
