  1. I wouldn't be surprised if there was an error in the Luxembourg setlist as originally posted. I just listened to that section of the Roadcase recording and I can't detect any edit between Radio Cure and Black Moon.

Could be that BBN was cut from the setlist, or it could be it was just posted by mistake. Wouldn't be the first time.

  2. I await Paul's comments, but for now let's just say that this show was Exhibit 437 in the "OMG standing versus sitting" debate. This audience came down pretty decisively on the "siddown shaddup" side.

The thoroughly lackluster crowd (with a handful of noteworthy exceptions, including one guy in the first row wearing a suit who danced exuberantly at every opportunity) seemed like they might have confused Wilco for George Thorogood, who had played the same venue the night before.

The band soldiered on in the face of massive indifference, with Jeff alternating between grumpy and bemused. The combo of "Hate It Here" and "Be Not So Fearful" seem downright prescient under the circumstances.

I doubt whether this one will make it into the Roadcase.

  3. What an amazing venue! A surprisingly loose performance with a great setlist.

The other audible in the encore was the substitution of Far Far Away for At Least That's What You Said, which was on the original setlist as the first song in the encore.

There's a hard-and-fast curfew of 10:30 at the Britt, and a security guard told me that the fine for going overtime is $5,000. So it's understandable that the encore got trimmed.

  4. Setlist:

    01 - Poor Places

    02 - Art of Almost

    03 - I Might

    04 - Sunken Treasure

05 - Company In My Back

06 - I Am Trying to Break Your Heart

    07 - One Wing

    08 - Black Moon

    09 - Spiders (Kidsmoke)

    10 - Impossible Germany

    11 - Born Alone

    12 - Hummingbird

    13 - Handshake Drugs

    14 - Shouldn't Be Ashamed

    15 - Whole Love

    16 - I'm Always In Love

    17 - Dawned On Me

18 - Shot in the Arm

    Encore:

    19 - Via Chicago

    20 - Heavy Metal Drummer

    21 - Walken

22 - I'm the Man Who Loves You

    23 - Jesus, Etc.

    Encore:

    24 - Can't Stand It

    25 - Monday

    26 - Outtasite (Outta Mind)

Here are my comments from the Just a Fan forum, cleaned up and expanded a bit. The above setlist is from the Wilcoworld.net Shows page. Note that they got the second encore wrong. Can't Stand It ends the first encore on their list, but I've changed the order to what was actually played. Very strange to have the first encore end with Jesus Etc. (No singalong, either.)

This is an amazing venue, built for a well-heeled crowd that pays very big bucks to see world-class performances of opera all summer long. They let us rabble in for a couple shows in September.

The sound was spectacular, and it was perfect weather for an indoor-outdoor venue. (There's a roof, but the sides are open, allowing a pleasant breeze through.)

The crowd took a while to warm up, but by midshow (ie, after Impossible Germany) they were on their feet and stayed there the whole time. Not a lot of obvious Wilco fans there, but an appreciative crowd, to be sure.

Some nice banter from Jeff, whose first words were "Nice place you got here." He also said "This leg of the tour is just getting started, but so far you guys are the best audience, and we played a hometown show just a couple days ago. Don't tell them back in Chicago, OK?"

We were in the front row, with the only thing separating us from the stage being a water feature about 18 inches from front to back and no more than an inch or two deep. I didn't think about this until Judy pointed it out later, but that layout meant no photographers at all, which means that the first three songs weren't a distraction as they are in so many other places. Tweedy commented on this layout, urging us all to stay away from "the moat" because it was filled with sulfuric acid. "I'm serious, he said. We're going to insist on a moat from now on and have that in our rider."

He also pointed out that the last time they played Santa Fe was right after the release of AM, at a little dive called Club Alegria. It no longer exists, but in its heyday it held probably 150 people and was in a very funky part of town.

I was surprised no Candyfloss given the opera setting.

Not a lot of chatter otherwise and although the performance was solid across the board the boys didn't show a lot of outward signs they were having fun. Just another night at the office ... er, opera.

  5. Dying to see a setlist or report from this show. C'mon, Santa Feans!

I didn't keep a setlist, but they opened with Poor Places / Art of Almost / I Might, followed by Company in My Back. Sunken Treasure was in there, acoustic Spiders, Shouldn't Be Ashamed, Hummingbird. HandShake Drugs into One Wing (yay, Wilco the Album).

Set ended with A Shot in the Arm.

Two encores: Via Chicago, ITMWLY, Walken, and ending with Jesus Etc, of all things. No singalong. Final encore was Can't Stand It, Monday, Outtasite (Outta Mind).

We leave for Oregon next week to see four shows in a row, ending at Hollywood Bowl.

  6. Although there are still tickets available for this show, the good sections sold out long ago. You'll be pretty far back if you buy from the Bowl. Their website has an excellent graphic display that shows you exactly which sections have seats available. I have seen several people selling extras in the Got Extras board here, which is where I would start. I also posted a seat map here.

  7. We were in the pit, front row center for the Albuquerque show. The venue is not my favorite, but the sound was stellar and it's hard to argue with that setlist. As they were wrapping up the fourth song I looked at my watch and saw that they had been playing for 45 minutes.

Everyone in the band seemed to be having fun.

  8. This is interesting.

The Wilco Shows listing for the Hollywood Bowl (September 30) was updated very recently to add the detail that Joanna Newsom is opening.

If you don't know Joanna Newsom (I didn't) she's a harpist. This article makes for an interesting read:

There's a Jim O'Rourke connection too, as he has produced/mixed two of her albums:

It will certainly set a tone...

  9. What I do like about it is when I see this song live with someone who has never seen Wilco before. They are invariably stunned. Having seen this a number of times, the wow factor has worn off for me, but knowing that wow factor is in play for 1/2 the crowd or so, I'll continue to enjoy it.

    This.

  10. Not sure why Wilco is trying this expirement with the Geneva show though. Since it was on the radio and online, I would think quality rips of that show would be available.

The compressed FM broadcast and webcast has terrible dynamic range, as well as a DJ who talked over the intro to a couple of songs. I'm happy to have a full fidelity recording.

  11. Whoa. That is just so wrong. I'm a creatve professional myself (writer/reporter). I'm trying to imagine a scenario in which they did the same thing with my notes or writing.

    Jeebus.
