  1. I think Stevie was probably picked, as a solo artist, more for being a fashion/cultural icon than for anything to do with her actual solo music output. Because, yeah: outside of the Mac, she didn't really have such an amazing career.

That is a good point - had not thought of her impact as a fashion or cultural icon.

  2. So are Def Leppard and Janet Jackson, whether you like them or not.

Also, I am super happy to see The Zombies and Roxy Music make it.

Overall, this is a good class.

I agree - this is a good class. The only one I might quibble with is Stevie Nicks, mainly because I don't think much of her solo work. Very surprised (and pleased) that Roxy Music made it in.

  3. I get that a lot of people dig the Golden Smog records, but I think if you put them in the context of Tweedy's entire story they're like a cool thing he worked on with some cool people he knew for a couple days where he offered a couple songs (which we all love). I don't think they're a major narrative landmark in his life. If he barely had time to talk about John Stirratt how would he have time to talk about his buddy from the Jayhawks?

Agree - in the grand scheme of things, Golden Smog is likely more important to us than it is to Jeff.

  4. Hey Inside, did you see the dwarf fall off "Stonehenge" at the beginning of the show? And if so, what was your (and the crowds) reaction?

I remember about zero from the show, other than Ian Gillian playing the bongos (really weird given, well, given that it was a Black Sabbath show) and that they played the hits. I saw Ozzy with Motley Crew as the opener about the same time - those two shows meld together in my brain. Both had to be the inspiration for Spinal Tap, though I believe they were about concurrent with the movie.

  5. Hanging out with a buddy over the weekend, looking thru his albums and came across Black Sabbath's "Born Again". Lots of people detest this album, but I always liked it primarily because Ian Gillan is singing and the album cover is so over the top bad that its actually pretty cool. Anyhow, my buddy hates this album so now it graces the top shelf in my living room.

The only time I saw Black Sabbath was on this tour. Not the one to see if you only saw them once.....

  6. Welcome!

As for an upcoming tour, it is looking more and more like there will be little if any live Wilco until around the time of the Solid Sound festival in June. They do have what appears to be a date in northern Spain in June, before SS. If past years are any guide, there will likely be some dates before SS, maybe May/June, then some touring after the festival. I am guessing/hoping for a great deal of touring next summer/fall, probably in the 3 weeks on the road, a few weeks off vein that they have embraced in the past few years. I would bet a Chicago show will get in there somewhere.

If you look at the thread "A Wilco Related Live Show" in the Just a Fan forum, that can help you read the tea leaves for the timing of possible upcoming Wilco shows. Based on that, it does not look like Wilco will be touring any time before mid-March at the earliest.

  7. Early bird tickets appear to be gone. That was pretty quick? When will the line-up likely be announced? Early next year?

Very quick compared to past Solid Sounds. I seem to remember February as the month that the line-ups are generally announced, with the three-day schedule out in April/early May.

  8. There is another one of these up for auction. Great cause - Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law. So cool that Jeff and Sue donate these kinds of things.

"A special behind-the-scenes look at the world of Wilco for the ultimate fan!

You and 19 friends will receive a priceless private tour of The Loft, the exclusive Chicago-based rehearsal and recording studio space used by Grammy Award winner Jeff Tweedy and Wilco. See the band’s extensive collection of guitars and other musical instruments. Bask in the vibes of Mavis Staples, Andrew Bird, Richard Thompson, and other greats who have recorded there. Mr. Tweedy will not only be your tour guide, he will also play a few songs for your group. This is an extremely rare opportunity for a personal tour and private performance from an alt-rock legend.

The tour will be scheduled at a mutually agreed upon date subject to Mr. Tweedy’s availability. Photos and short videos may be taken for personal use only, and they may not be posted online. Restrictions apply, offer expires June 15, 2019.

Donated by Jeff Tweedy and Susan Miller Tweedy"

What a great idea, and a great cause.

  9. Yep, tense moments. Glad BOS eked it out, of course, and glad it was  NYY that they did. HOU will be tough.

Really tough. I know that the Sox have home field advantage, but I do not see them as the favorite here. Even with 108 regular season wins.

I cannot vouch for the accuracy above - it is to the best of my knowledge of the AD catalogue.

The Opera House in Boothbay Harbor is a classic, coastal, small-town New England venue. Folding chairs. Simple design. Open floor, plus a balcony. Outstanding sound for a place with so much exposed wood.

Johnny Irion played an inspired set to open the show, playing several songs off of his new record. This was the third time that I have seen him, and his performance tonight was equal to, or better than, the previous times.

The Autumn Defense set had a hometown feel, with 75 or so folks in attendance for a pristine-sounding, absolutely lovely show. The second half of the show really lifted off the ground, with Pat playing some ripping leads on We Would Never Die and A House is Not a Motel.

Earlier in the show, John noted that the band members had enjoyed Maine the day before, even though the day's fog meant that they were unable to get out on the ocean in their boat. You had the sense that the band had a great time at John's house the night before (listening to Ry Cooder, or so a social media post said).

If you have a chance to see them on the next few nights of the tour, lucky you.

  11. Longtime registered independent who has probably voted 65-35 Democrat over the years. Recently registered as a Democrat.

I'm not sure if the Republican Party should be renamed the Trump Party or the Fascist Party. Regardless, it is not the Republican Party we knew in the 80s and 90s.

  12. As soon as I told my wife she said we'll go and see Wilco on Friday and head to VT after the show. One of the many reasons we'll be celebrating our 35th this year :)

    That's a good woman there.
