  1. I don't think you can go wrong with any of his stuff really. I started with "The Giant Pin" and that's a really solid record, with a good mix of sort of spacey stuff and really brilliant wailing.

If you like left-field jazz try either his set of Andrew Hill stuff, or Interstellar Space Revisited.

  2. I know cycling76 was linked on Wilcoworld for a while, and I would guess it was what they're talking about. There's also a program called metasynth that produces sound based on drawings you make...pretty cool.

I haven't done nearly enough work with real-time electronic manipulation and creation to know that much. Most of my computer experimentation/manipulation has been in programs like protools.

  3. fucking great band...

and yeah, Afternoon records are pimp!

also check out Mouthful of Bees

    Definitely :thumbup

My good friend here at school is their lead singer/guitarist, he's a pretty awesome dude, and they're definitely a fun band.

Edit: I also just checked their label roster again, and realized that I went to high school with pretty much all of the guys in the Plagiarists.

  4. Hey you almost read that correctly... Maybe next time.

    :rolleyes Seriously.

I think Wilco was great with Jay (YHF is my favorite album by far), I think Wilco is still great with Nels, etc. I don't think they've lost any edge or have become too stale/bland in their playing. Jay brought a really rich sense of arrangement, Nels brings a really rich sense of tonality, melody, and timing. Both of them compliment Jeff's work well. Personally I just like that Wilco is always evolving, and as much as I would love another YHF sounding record I'm excited for SBS and haven't heard it yet :dancing

  5. Let me know if any of the following are desirable and I will yousendit right away:

The Breeders-"Happiness is a Warm Gun"

    Cardigans-"Iron Man"

    Colin Meloy-"Jack the Ripper"

Cornershop-"Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"

    CSNY-"Woodstock"

    Jefferson Airplane-"Triad"

Jimi Henderix-"Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window"

(Anything off of REM's Dead Letter Office which is all covers)

    Yes-"America"

    Yo La Tengo-"Little Honda"

  6. I'm going to Pitchfork, thought it was really well run and a nice setup last year, and I'm definitely looking forward to the Youth, though Saturdays lineup is pretty subpar at the moment.

Other than that, I was considering Bonnaroo, but it's just too much cash at this point. I'll probably hit up the Iowa City jazz festival, and then if anything cheap/free happens in Minneapolis I'll go to that.

Right now I'm just stoked about my Davenport Wilco tickets and soon I think I'll pick up some tickets for the Minneapolis Tortoise show. Now I'm just hoping for a couple more good bands and I'll be very happy. (Come on Hold Steady/Sea and Cake/Califone/or Yo La Tengo...)

  7. On the topic of outrageous claims/lyrics...a few of my favorites:

    Richochet-Daddy's Money

"She's a good bass fisher / A dynamite kisser / Country as a turnip green"

Maybe this one is a compliment to fisher-persons, but really dynamite kisser/good bass fisher is just a really off the wall weird ass combo. And the turnip green bit is just kind of funny. I heard this one flipping through on the radio and actually laughed in the car.

    Lynyrd Skynyrd-That Smell

"Ooh, ooh that smell / Can't you smell that smell?"

What the hell is this line doing in a song? It's probably one of the stupidest single lines until Mmmbop came along. Plus Skynyrd has never been a favorite of mine.

    Foreigner-Dirty White Boy

"Cause I'm a dirty white boy / Yeah a dirty white boy / A dirty white boy"

This song caused me to laugh uncontrollably. Foreigner gets so into it that it nearly made me cry with laughter, especially when the full backup vocals on this chorus come in.

    Lil Flip-Sunshine

"I'll treat you like milk, I'll do nothing but spoil you"

It's supposed to be a compliment, but it just ends up sounding like a weird and stupid line. Spoiled milk smells awful and looks bad, it just doesn't work.

    MC Hammer-Pumps and a Bump

"Pumps and a bump, Pumps and a bump, we like the girls with the Pumps and a bump!"

He was done long before this song came out, but this was really the last nail in the proverbial coffin.

  9. Thanks again.

I'm sure there will be some questions about why no one checked the pool (it's so close to campus and they searched everywhere else), but I think that the search both here and by the family really was about as extensive as one could hope for. Hopefully this will be closure for everyone involved, even if it isn't the kind anyone would have wanted, and hopefully it will encourage people to take care of themselves and those around them.
