  1. I use a combintion of outboard gear and DAW. Currently I am using Audacity to record, mix and edit but I will be deciding on a more permanent set up. I have Ableton and N-Tracks as well but I really don't like either one. For hardware I have a Line 6 TonePort that I use for I\O and I line out of that into a Berringer Xenyx 2442 mixer. I have a some KRK RP5 powered montiors and KRK powered sub that I use for playback and mixing.

I pretty much use Line 6 Gearbox for all my effects, vocals and guitars. I have my drums mic'ed and running into the mixer and I use the mixer to dial those in before I track drums. That's pretty much it besides mics.

With DAW you have so many plugin options it's hard not to go that way. From a cost standpoint you'd never be able to buy all the gear you can digitally model. Many of those plugins are free.

Here's my "studio" if you want to look. Guess you don't have a choice since I posted pics.

  2. Nothing new either...all key of G barroom rock. Which has it's place, I admit, just not in my CD player.

It's fine you're not a Jay fan but that ^ is just plain out wrong. Evidentally you missed the songs in open tunings on his last few records.

What I don't get is why his personality makes him any less of a musician or detracts from his work. Either you like his music or you don't. Until I hear that he beats his wife and kids, or some other REAL bad behavior, I couldn't care less if he wasn't smiling during some after show autograph signing. He's a musician not a motivational speaker.

  3. Sweet, last time I saw SV in Boulder they freakin' rocked.

As for Jay being unfriendly he was real nice the two times I met him. After a 2003 solo show at the Mishawaka Inn in CO he stood on the edge of the stage and signed autographs chatting with those waiting for a long ass time. Many people snapped his photo as that was happening, he seemed cool with it then.

  4. I'd look into the Line 6 Tone Port and pursue PC based recording. The TP is only $199 and it pretty much does it all, I really like the bass and vocal models. I use mine for everything from vocals to drums and get great results. Using a DI box like the TP with a mixer is even better. I have a total of less than 1.5K invested in my entire studio including mics, well I guess that doesn't include the PC but I already had that.

I did everything on the cheap, Peavey 12 channel board, Tone Port, Fostex powered monitors and sub, Shure 58's and 57's and Nady drum mics. People are amazed by how good my recordings sound. I like to tease the Firepod folks.

Anyway I originally had just the Line 6 box and one Shure 58. For recordings without drums I was able to go direct for everything with good to great results. The more time I spend getting a good sound before I push record the better the end result. That doesn't change regardless of what you use to record.

  5. Here's a pic of the Tele I just modded. I was considering a 52 RI but I hate the color of the new ones, most are a really weird pumpkin orange color. So I built this 2006 50's Tele instead. It's a poly finish but I think it feels better than most of the similar US Fender's I've recently played. I scored a pretty good deal on it too, with the mods I'm in it around $600 which is less than a new one.

This is what I did to it.

    Fender CS Texas Tele pups

    US Fender 4 way switch

Rothstein wiring upgrade with NOS cloth wire, CTS pots, Switchcraft jack and Hovland cap.

    Copper foil shielding

    52 RI bridge

    brass compensated saddles

    52 RI black guard

    52 RI control plate

    It sounds amazing.

  6. I have a bunch of stuff, I play it all too. I need to mention that since I get the usual "you can only play one at time" remarks when I mention my gear. Most of my stuff is used for home recording but I do play out from time to time if a friends band needs an extra hand.

  7. Please look at the Ibanez DE-7, for $65 it can't be beat. It gets a few bad reviews but all seem to be durability issues. Personally I'm not a "stomper" so I haven't had a problem. The pedal does both delay and echo. The slapback is great for not only that old surf and rockabilly sound but works great for that haunting 70's David Lindley slide tone. The delay can do a bunch of stuff with switchable delay times.

    See and hear it here.

  8. IMO the only traits Nirvana shared with the Pixies were a few songs featuring the soft verse loud chorus with screamed vocals and that's where the similarity ends. It's not like the Pixies invented that anyway, they were a great band but not the hugely influential band people think they were. That stuff might have sounded fresh then to unsuspecting indie kids but the formula was old hat. Rock and metal bands had been doing that for years when they starting ripping off the first practitioners of that, Led Zeppelin.

Personally I still think Nevermind sounds great. IMO It's alleged "bad production" all stems from that one comment Kurt made about it not sounding punk enough, comparing it to GnR, way back when. It's akin to the remarks the Stones made about RnR Circus being bad, then it turns up and it's a killer document of a great band in their prime. All the while people had been bad mouthing based on the bands previous remarks.

  9. I never saw them live, but from the footage and recordings I've heard, they never seemed like that great of a live band. I'd be interested in a new record, maybe, but I doubt I'd pay top dollar to see them play.

I agree. If anyone else say the "vintage" Police concert they aired on VH1 a few months back you know they weren't a phenominal live band. I was so disappointed I actually stopped recording the show.

  10. I don't think that rant proves he's anything but a bad stand up comic. At first it seems like he was trying to turn it into a bit but he lost control of it and the audience. I don't think he's any more at fault than the audience member it was directed at. He did as much as he could to make it ugly in the end. When he got up an decided to turn it into a confrontation is when it got worse. Go ahead and walk out if you're offended but confronting a performer is never a good thing. Sure Richards could have handled it better but the guy took part in it too.

I can't say I approve of what he said but that's part of going to see stand up, you expect to be shocked. Sadly thanks to guys like Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce people started mistaking vulgarity for humor. Unfortunately racist remarks have become part of comedy. Unforntunately for Richards and all that had to see that he doesn't do it well. But I've seen and heard worse from other comics of all races.

  11. That wouldn't be an easy song to cover, that they were able to capture key elements of the guitar jam part impressed me. The odd thing was the vocalist guy kind of flubs the intro part but once they start on the "jammy" part it came together.

  12. It's looks like they are in a school commons or cafeteria, you can see people coming in and out of the hall behind them.

Very respectable cover. That drummer is a brute, I don't think Bonham could smack his ride that hard that many times.

  13. I modded my VJ Combo with a V-Mod kit I bought on ebay. For $25 and the time it took to pull out the chassis it was well worth the time and money. The kit is simple to install, it requires drilling 3 holes in the face and 4 solders to opposite ends of 2 resistors. It included a "bright" switch, "gain" switch and "standby" switch. I really bought the kit just for the standby switch but was pleasantly surprised by the way the other switches affected the amps tone. The bright added some sparkle and the gain gave the amp a little more drive, which is very subtle but vintage sounding. With the amps volume at 1 o'clock it really starts to come alive with both switches on. At lower volumes the switches don't have as much affect on the tone.

The amazing thing about the VJ is how extremely loud it is, it's the loudest 5W amp I've ever witnessed. I make no exaggeration when I say you could use it to play with a heavy handed drummer. The bad thing about that is the amp has a little too much headroom, especially considering it's only 5W. I would prefer that it break up at a lower volume rather than having to push it so hard, for house friendly volumes this is a bad thing. When it does start to sing the tone is beautiful. With my SG I was able to get great classic rock tone, think Leslie West's tone on Mississippi Queen without any tone modifying stomp boxes, with my Tele I could get Sticky Fingers era Keef tone.

I like the VJ's so much I just bought 2 of the head versions to do some different mods to. I'm going to mod one with the Bitmo trio kit and use it with a 412 cab and one I'm going to mod and give as a Xmas gift. For $99 dollars these amps are nothing short of amazing. Believe the hype you read about these on the net.

Here's a pic of the face after the mod.

Sorry I can't post any sound clips at this time since I don't have a mic that would do the amp justice and the VJ has no line out.
