  1. I was at Square Roots for those two sets too. It was great! The lovely weather helped, but the fest offers good site lines, is not jam packed and solid drink options. Both bands were really inspiring last night imo! Was curious to see Superchunk without Jon Wurster and it wasn't a big deal. Sounded tight and super energerized.

Annoying that the Scottsdale show is general admission, lawn only. Sounds like everyone is going to be sitting on low-rise lawn chairs and you can't stand.

At least it's cheap? $65 after fees might be the least expensive on the tour? I'd gladly pay more for a better venue though.

  3. Interesting that they didn't tag The Ace Theatre shows as no repeats so maybe that's not a thing there (as a result of new material hopefully).

I bought tickets for Wichita a show which has now disappeared from wilcoworld, the venue's website, and See Tickets (???)

  4. Can't figure out why two Wilcoworld email newsletters in a row don't include the two October Cali shows in their otherwise full accounting of upcoming gigs. Seems weird. Also, did others catch the Cousin references in the email?

Stumbled upon it by accident - I was trying to look up some Cruel Country lyrics and thought the blank space in the discography page seemed a little strange. Hovered over and there it was.

No artwork or lyrics attached just yet - but am very much looking forward to an official announcement when it's ready to drop.

Didn't mean to blow up the band's or website staff's spot too much. Got excited when I saw it and figured this was the place that would be most appreciated/the folks whose jaws would drop if they saw the same as I had.

You scooped the Shot in the Arm Facebook group. Well done.

  6. Caught the last two Feist shows (Radius in Chicago last night & First Ave in Minneapolis Wednesday) - really creative show. On no mind alternating chemicals I was asking myself "is this real" for the first third of the show. I'd recommend catching her this tour even if you are only a very casual fan like me.

I think there has been some level of either indifference or bemusement, unfortunately — indifference in the sense that it seems like a lot of people haven't even arrived yet by the time they go on, and bemusement because a lot of the people who are there don't seem to know what to make of them. The latter could be because they kind of have adopted this stage presence that is like a combination of, like, 1950s-era "sister" groups with their matching pink dresses and songs featuring yodeling and harmonies and a comedic duo act with their kooky banter and minimal instrumentation.

And for people who had maybe looked them up and taken note of the fact that Amelia Meath is one half of Sylvan Esso, there might have some preconceived notions based on that band and The A's are nothing like that.

Then again, maybe I'm being too cynical. Certainly there have been at least a few open-minded folks each night who have seemed to genuinely dig them — one of them being Jeff, who has watched from side stage at least once or twice so far.

Thanks! Exactly what I expected. Bummed to not catch any of the shows on the tour that they are supporting.

  8. I thought The Wilco's hit all the marks last night. Positive vibes throughout. Jeff has mastered the art of presenting 5 songs from their latest album in a festival setting!

The crowd seemed to bear the opening numbers culled from that latest albums before locking into sync with the band during Handshake Drugs and Spiders in the #4 slot, nice and early in the set, gave the crowd the opportunity to participate. As Jeff said when a smattering of organic clapping commenced "it's yours if you want it."

A Shot in the Arm never ceases to impress and the Being There closing duo took us out on a very very positive note. Congrats to the "Raised on Wilco" tshirt adorned fan (and her mom) for a) Making everyone feel old and 2) winning "Best Behaved" and to Wilco for winning "Best Band So Far" at the event. As Jeff joked, Wilco's stake in the trophy company is clearly paying off.

As our typical setlist stenographer would share at this point, here is the entire set as played (the final two songs were added to the printed setlist and held the band to their strict 75 minute set time):

    I am Your Mother

    Cruel County

Handshake Drugs (with Eric Slick on percussion)

    Spiders (Kidsmoke)

Bird Without a Tail/ Base of My Skull

Tired of Taking It Out on You

Jesus, Etc. (with Lucius' Jess and Holly)

    Impossible Germany

    The Late Greats

    Heavy Metal Drummer

    A Shot in the Arm

    Falling Apart (Right Now)

I Got You (At the End of the Century)

    Outtasite (Outta Mind)

Not to belabor this, but I really want to emphasize that this is not just about the first night of this residency. On the Cruel Country tour, only three of the 36 most-played songs came from these six albums. "Impossible Germany" was played 39 times, "If I Ever Was a Child" was played 33 times and "Love Is Everywhere (Beware)" was played 27 times. The next-most-played song on the tour from these six albums was "Everyone Hides," which was played at six of 59 shows. The only other song with more than three appearances on the tour was "You and I," which was performed five times.

There were two songs from Star Wars played over 59 shows: "Random Name Generator" twice.

There were four songs from The Whole Love over 59 shows: "Dawned on Me" twice, "Born Alone" once and "Whole Love" once.

"You and I" was the only song played from Wilco (The Album) on the tour.

Only "If I Ever Was a Child" and "Cry All Day"-- which was played once-- appeared from Schmilco.

Aside from "Impossible Germany," five other Sky Blue Sky songs appeared, one twice and four others once each.

These albums have been missing in action for a while now. It's not a small sample. The other night was only continuing the trend.

So....where did we end up with this? I was there and recall they played some songs from SBS through Schmilco nights 2 & 3. The song selection for night one seemed the best received by the audience to me.
