  1.

Personal preference, different tastes, yada, yada, yada. Ranking Being There last is absolutely preposterous. Exactly what genre is it? There are more "genres" represented on that one album than any other Wilco album.

I agree. Some of the best Wilco songs are on that record...Misunderstood, Hotel Arizona, Sunken Treasure, The Lonely 1, Monday...but whatevs.

I'm listening to The Lonely 1 as I type and that is one gorgeous song.

  2.

Jeff and John are Wilco. Jeff said on the Ashes dvd that while he didn't anticipate or want it, the band could absorb a member leaving except for John.

I might just cry if John left. It warms my heart that he's been there straight through.

Also, one of my favorite things about a new record coming out is that it inspires you to go back and listen to all the old ones again.

    Such a treat.

  3. In addition to jumping on the bandwagon of praise for this album, I would also like to say that the people talking smack about "You and I" and especially "The Late Greats"... actually, I have nothing to say to those people. They are dead to me.

Just kidding, we're all friends here, I hope. I just don't understand how people considering themselves Wilco fans would come on a Wilco fansite and say that certain Wilco songs are "shite" or unlistenable. You're entitled to your opinion but when you express it in such an extreme fashion it just sounds like trolling even if that's not the intent.

I made a comment about The Late Greats being barely tolerable and I'm certainly not a troll. Wilco's music covers a lot of ground and everywhere that they venture isn't always for me. That's all. Can we still be friends?

  4. I was reading all this stuff about parts of the album sounding like AM not sure I hear that at all. But I think I remember reading a Tweedy quote along the lines of "every album I ever make, no matter what, is going to be called alt-country by someone."

Don't kill me for saying this but I thought Open Mind sounded like a return to A.M. When I first saw the video of Tweedy playing the song solo, I loved it and couldn't wait to hear how it would be with the band. It has a kinda alt-country twang to it that I wasn't expecting.

  5. i listened 3 times on my laptop with shitty speakers, then i had to go shopping so i listened on my iphone with my bose ear buds and wow...love all the little layers and sounds, its a beautiful sounding record....my favorite is 'sunday morning' and i love how it just keeps going and going :yes

Agree about the headphones. I am so much more into it now that I'm listening with them and I agree about One Sunday Morning too. That is one beautiful and heartbreaking song. I love the way Tweedy's voice sounds on this song. I can't put my finger on what it is but there is a quality to it that is just so touching.

I feel the same way. Since I'm new to Wilco fandom (although I've been a cursory listener since "Being There"), I didn't really hear any of the albums in order. I dig most of W(TA), and I love SBS. This record, however....is...uh...better.

I have loved something about every single Wilco album and this one is no exception. I have been lucky enough to hear them all as they came out and have never been let down. That's a beautiful thing.

Let me fix that for ya: Nothing could possibly top the first-last combo of At Least That's What You Said (their best song) and The Late Greats. :ike

Even the greatness of ALTWYS cannot make up for the barely tolerable Late Greats. So I vote no on that one.

  8. Could we make the case that this has the best opening and closing songs on any Wilco record with AoA and OSM?

Yes. I totally agree. These are the two songs that are stood out to me upon first listen and are sticking with me after repeated listens.

  9. I've given it about 5 listens so far. It's pretty much like every other Wilco album for me. There are a few songs that I love, I few that are nice enough and a few that are not my cup of tea. It's always been this way for me with Wilco all the way back to A.M. and I accept that. I often end up liking some songs more than I thought I would after seeing them performed live and there are a few on this new record that I think will be amazing live, ex. Art of Almost and Born Alone. All in all, I'm thrilled to have some new Wilco to listen to and I can't wait for the shows.

  10. Black Moon sounds kinda like an updated version of Black Eye.

I've been listening to Open Mind from the video of the Strombo show and wondering what it would be like with the whole band. I was imagining something fuller but now I think I like the solo version better.
