Honestly that would probably be pretty great! Though that Mermaid Avenue possibility has be intrigued as hell. Do they still have beef with Bragg or has that blown over with time? Be cool to get him out for a Mermaid Ave set.

He has UK dates in June and July, unlikely he would come over only for one guest appearance

The black vinyl didn't seem particularly thick, but I didn't really examine it. I just pulled it out of the sleeve and glanced at the label to see what it looked like. I haven't listened to it yet.

It's the thickest record I own (or have ever seen)

  3. Some interesting opinions here, thanks. Those suggesting also another studio is a good one. I am not saying Jeff is necessarily complacent, but getting him (and the band) out of their comfort zone could provide dividends.

  4. Talking about a name one e.g. Nigel Goodrich. One who would stand up to Jeff and occasionally say these lyrics need a little work or that arrangement is not too exciting. May lead to some difficult times in The Loft but could mean we get a record with a bit more light and shade than the likes of Cruel Country. I think in general the songs are there, but someone who occasionally told  Jeff some hard truths could help produce a much more interesting record

With the vinyl delays causing problems all over the globe, I think we're at a point where no band should be allowed to put out 11 LP sets.  At least until the supply issues are worked out.  How many bands do you suppose have had their vinyl releases sidelined in part because of these types of vanity projects?

YHF deserves to be celebrated, but creating 11 LP sets causes damage the music ecosystem and is a selfish ego stroke.  Tweedy should have read the room and scaled it back.

Yes.  I am a vinyl person, but personally I find for these archive type sets with demos, alternates and live tracks that a digital format is much better. Easy to skip tracks and one doesn't have to get up every 18-20 minutes to flip them over. I wonder how many plays in particular these huge vinyl sets actually get or do they mostly sit in the corner of the room looking like the monolith from 2001. Prince's Sign O The Times super deluxe vinyl set had 13 LPs. Great album but who's going to get through that more than once?

  6. Not with those who say it sounds more like Wilco. To me it is Love is the King part 2 (which was Warm pt 3).  Hardly any backing vocals, keyboards almost non existent, virtually no Nels and Glenn doesn't seem to be playing much that Spencer hasn't probably already played on these songs.

There are a few good songs, but the whole thing is just so downbeat it makes me hope that Jeff is getting some professional help, he sounds so depressed. I am sure songwriting is part of his way of dealing with it.

After I listened to it in the car I switched to the Sirius/XM 60s station. They were playing I can See for Miles, full of drama, crashing chords, wonderful lyrics and a production that blows your mind. Wilco can do that! (or they used to be able to)

I reserve the right to modify my opinion after a few more listens, so far 2.33, with 1.33 of those being live.

    Solid Sounds/MASSMoCA socials said 2024

What I expect except Jeff said, "see you next year". I imagine they may take something of a break next year though after intense activity this one.

I wonder if Memorial Day weekend will become the new standard for Solid Sound. Anyone have a sense, or know why it moved from late June? Sunday certainly seemed to benefit from the holiday weekend -- it was much more crowded than I can remember in previous years -- clearly a win for the vendors and performers and the festival as a whole. I always loved late June -- and selfishly the trip is easier to make with school schedules and things. But I'll take a weekend in North Adams whenever Wilco can make it happen and whenever it's best for the town and the museum.

And unless I misheard, Jeff mentioned on Saturday night that they'd planned this particular festival three times. Were they actually considering a 2020 festival on the heels of 2019? Or did Jeff thrown an extra year in there, easily done given the time warp of the pandemic? Or did I just mishear?

They are booked for festivals in Europe late June this year. This would not have been the case had it taken place in 2021, I would expect them to return to the normal weekend. Whether next one will be 2023 or 2024 remains to be seen.

  9. Apart from DB showing up and Sammy's magnificent Helpless rendition it was a bit flat and actually something of a snoozefest. Too many similar songs played in a similar way. Some great moments of course, but my least favorite of the 3 closing sets I have witnessed. Quite a few people near me (right up front) left early muttering things about lack of beach balls ...

And Sukeriae is the best thing he has done since (at least) Sky Blue Sky

I went to the Friday night show.   The performance itself was impressive, but if they were only going to play the album, they should have engaged with the audience a bit more in between songs.  They could have given a little more context about the album, the writing process, the songs, anything.  Instead, they muscled through the set at lightning speed to the point where Jeff was winded.  It felt like they had dinner plans...

Absolutely not. It was great to hear the album in full with no stage patter until the encore although I got the longer sets on Sat and Sun
