Wilco — 8/1/12, Hartford, CT (Mortensen Hall at The Bushnell)

Glad you posted about Lee. As I've mentioned before, I've been enjoying his sets a lot. Having Nels and Pat sit in helps, of course, but I'm really digging these songs the more I hear them. Obviously he was always a bit of a third wheel in the Sonic Youth universe — though I'm sure some of their hardcore fans would probably beg to differ — but I always liked the few songs he got to sing in a given show. As for these opening sets with Wilco, most of the songs have been the same from night to night but that's only natural when you only have one album to draw from and you have guests sitting in -

Wilco — 7/31/12, North Adams, MA (Hunter Center at MASS MoCA)

Someone who got a printed setlist can confirm, but I think Black Moon was the only scratch off the planned list. Not sure if something else got substituted in its place, but anyway. It was sort of weird to see the Hunter Center without either the bleacher/stadium seating or full of rows of chairs (like when it was used for the comedy sets during Solid Sound). It seemed a lot smaller than I thought, sort of like a college's multi-purpose room if that helps anybody get a better sense. But it sure was LOUD in there, at least where I was standing; I think Jeff even said something to that effect -
I'm sure plenty of folks will chime in soon enough, but for now, here was the complete setlist as played for the MASS MoCA benefit show: One Sunday Morning> Poor Places> Art Of Almost I Might She's A Jar I Am Trying To Break Your Heart Born Alone Muzzle Of Bees Spiders (Kidsmoke) (acoustic arrangement) Impossible Germany Capitol City Handshake Drugs> Wishful Thinking What's The World Got In Store Whole Love A Magazine Called Sunset War On War Dawned On Me A Shot in the Arm --------------------------- Via Chicago California Stars Box Full Of Letters I'm Always In Love Jesus, etc. (cr

Figured I'd also post the setlist for the Lee Ranaldo Band's opening set. This Brewery Ommegang show marked the first time Pat sat in with them on this run — Nels also continued to sit in — leading Lee to half-jokingly dub it the Lee Ranaldo Big Band. Anyway, they played this 45-minute set: Off The Wall Angles Waiting On A Dream (w/Pat Sansone on organ) Tomorrow Never Comes (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar and Pat Sansone on tambourine and organ) Xtina As I Knew Her (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar and Pat Sansone on organ) Hammer Blows (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar and Pat Sansone on o

Now that we're back, I can finally post this setlist that wasn't completely accurate on the Wilco Facebook page... This was a pretty stellar show in my book, perhaps owing to the great sound where my compatriots and I were standing. Often when you're off to a side, either in front of Nels or Pat, you get too much of their guitar amp at the expense of the overall mix but I have to say that it sounded great in front of Nels. He was loud and clear, yet not too overpowering. Sound was excellent, I thought, for the Lee Ranaldo Band's opening set as well. As for Wilco's set, Jeff's sister was i

Some rain early on in Wilco's set didn't seem to deter a beer-fueled crowd ready to have a good time. And a good time was had by most, it seemed... A solid show despite some early technical difficulty. Cool to hear Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion sing on a couple of Woody tunes, and of course Hoodoo is always a fun closer. Very funny to hear Jeff's Ramones story as well, as well as the addendum about how to look like a punk in St. Louis... Here was the complete setlist, as played: Christ For President> Art Of Almost I Might Poor Places> Spiders (Kidsmoke) (acoustic arrangement) Impossible Germany Born Alone> Laminated Cat (aka Not For The Season) (electric arrangement) Open Mind Handshake Drugs (started and restarted) Ca

Would be remiss if I didn't mention that it was awesome to see Cibo Matto's opening set as well, with cameos from all members of Wilco. So fun! I hesitate to make a Deerhoof comparison because obviously the main similarity is both bands having a Japanese frontwoman, though their music is quite different. But I feel like there is also something comparable in that both have a sense of playfulness about them. They're serious musicians, but they don't take themselves too seriously, if that makes any sense. And like with Deerhoof when they opened for Wilco many moons ago, I'm sure there will be som

Well, as I've sometimes said, you really need a third night in a given city to get a full picture of the band at this point. Hot damn! I would have to say one of the top few (Wilco) shows of the year, IMHO. More comments later, but for now, here was the complete setlist as played: One Sunday Morning> Art Of Almost I Might At Least That's What You Said She's A Jar Kamera Can't Stand It Too Far Apart What's The World Got In Store Impossible Germany Born Alone Capitol City> Laminated Cat (aka Not For The Season) (electric arrangement) Summer Teeth Whole Love Theologians> I'm The Man

I hear it's an abridged Art Of Almost for the broadcast and then Laminated Cat for the Web exclusive, fwiw...

Wilco — 7/24/12, Brooklyn, NY (Prospect Park Bandshell)

A few other nerdy show notes that I remembered after shaking out the cobwebs this morning: *During the intro to Monday, Nels put a couple of "Ban Fracking Now" stickers on himself (and later one on his guitar). Obviously it's a cause that he feels strongly about — along with his wife and a lot of their friends — so that was cool to see. *Jeff broke a string on Laminated Cat from, er, vigorous strumming. He used to break strings all the time, but I can't remember the last time he did it. *As I think I noted a few days ago, it seems like they've very subtly rearranged Arline To Heaven a bit so -

Yes, Nels has been sitting in with Lee's band regularly on this run thus far. -

In case anybody cares, here was the Lee Ranaldo Band setlist from last night (I'm really digging their set the more I see it and get to know the songs): Waiting On A Dream Angles Off The Wall Xtina As I Knew Her (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar) Tomorrow Never Comes (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar) Shouts (w/Nels Cline on lap steel) Hammer Blows (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar) Thank You For Sending Me An Angel [Talking Heads] (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar)> Fire Island (Phases) (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar) -
Told someone I would get this up tonight, so anyway... A fun little gig after the festivities at Prospect Park earlier in the evening. The Manderley Bar turned out to be a neat little space that was sort of like a little cabaret, with small cocktail tables clustered around a tiny stage. This was the AD quartet -- in other words, their regular band with Greg "G. Wiz" Wieczorek on drums and the esteemed James Haggerty on bass (but minus John Pirrucello on guitar.) As you might expect, quite a few musicians were in attendance; among them: Liam Finn and Eliza-Jane Barnes and Kraig Johnson. Nel

Well, Brooklyn celebrated (and was celebrated)... By my count, the band came on at 8:16 and finished a couple minutes past curfew at 10:33. A relatively quiet opening third of the show eventually developed into a fun, loose and rockin' second half. The complete setlist, as played, for Night 2 at Prospect Park (a *much* lovelier night weather-wise, btw, than Night 1): I Might Misunderstood Side With The Seeds Pot Kettle Black Hummingbird Black Moon Spiders (Kidsmoke) (acoustic arrangement) Impossible Germany Born Alone> Wishful Thinking Laminated Cat (aka Not For The Season) (electric

Great energy tonight, as usual at the Charlottesville — er...um...nTelos Wireless — Pavilion, and the weather gods smiled on us (except for the crazy humidity). The band responded in kind with an old-fashioned sweaty rock 'n roll show. Must mention one comment Jeff made in the encore when he complimented the Charlottesville crowd: "If this was the 70's," Jeff said in part, "we would overdub you and put you on our live album." Some more comments hopefully to follow at some point, but for now, here was the complete setlist, as played: Poor Places> Art Of Almost I Might At Least That's

Another very muggy, but very fun evening! As promised, the band played mostly songs they hadn't done the previous night so that those who attended both shows got a pretty good sampling of the current state of the band over the two gigs. I'm sure someone will break it down by album or by figure out the stats on how many different songs were played over the two nights or whatever people do, but suffice it to say that if you're anything more than a casual fan — and chances are if you're reading this, you probably are — and are able to, it's always worth it to get to both nights. Personally,

In addition to helping Lee's band flesh out its sound, he really shone on the Ashes and Impossible Germany solos. After IG, Jeff said something like, "Nels Cline, everybody. ... I heard curfew was at 10:55 p.m. tonight and that's exactly when Wilco finished. Not sure why they would change anything for Night 2. Wolf Trap is sort of a weird place...pretty strictly run. Perhaps a local can elaborate more. But the schedule was pretty tightly adhered to, it seemed to me (and I seem to remember that from last time as well). Maybe it has to do with being a national park (i.e. under federal supervision)? Anyway, the set times were more or less as stated above: Lee Ranaldo Band 8:00-8:30 and Wilco 8:55-10:55. FYI Nels came out and played with Lee and his band for most of the -

U of K is in Lexington, fwiw. And there was no encore. The Wilco crew definitely wasn't getting the stage ready for more music. In fact, we decided that the band probably wasn't coming back out when Jeff's pedalboard was taken away.
