  1. Incidentally, Nels' ability to fit seamlessly into so many different scenes and play and assimilate such a wide range of styles are a couple of the traits I most admire about him. And why I think he's such an ideal fit for Wilco, fwiw.
  2. Even though I seriously doubt he'll ever see this thread, I figure it's worth starting one anyway. Consider it a new Nels appreciation thread, if nothing else... Somebody should go find and post a link to video of one of the recent performances of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" by the Flaming Lips with Mr. Cline from New Year's Eve/Day. Psychedelic heaven! And if you happen to be in New York City this week or next, Nels has a show with the Singers on Friday night at Le Poisson Rouge. Next weekend at Rockwood Music Hall, he's reprising his Pillow Wand duo with Thurston Moore (1/13) as wel
  3. Pretty sure it was in Seattle, where Frisell lives. And that orange Tele is Nels' -- it's a Nashguitars model, I believe (they make vintage custom Fenders from various parts).
  4. Now that'd be a cool band right there! Bill Frisell and Jeff on electric guitars and Nels on drums; I wonder what that trio's music would sound like. (I can attest to the fact that Nels can hold his own on the skins... )
  5. Yeah, RIP indeed. Hadn't realized he had been living in Florida since the early 1990s. Definitely someone I wish I would have gotten a chance to see perform. Here's the NY Times obit by Nate Chinen.
  6. I know that you mean Not For The Season, but I can't help imagining what you wrote as some sort of anti-Zombies tune or parody or something. Haha.
  7. Some people were asking me after the show last night about how many songs they played over the five nights this time and I just went through and counted them up. I came up with a total of 100 different songs played over the course of this run. That includes Outtasite (Outta Mind) and Outta Mind (Outta Sight) as separate songs, but only counts Spiders once, even though the acoustic version is a vastly different song than the regular one. And it also includes Cruel To Be Kind, You Are Not Alone and The Weight from the first night (doesn't that seem like a long time ago?) Not sure exactly how
  8. What else can you say? Just a great end to a great week--2 hours, 32 minutes and 31 songs, by my count. The complete setlist, as played: One Sunday Morning One By One In A Future Age Country Disappeared When The Roses Bloom Again Why Would You Wanna Live Cars Can't Escape Rising Red Lung At My Window Sad And Lonely Someday, Some Morning, Sometime Laminated Cat (acoustic arrangement) Open Mind Dash 7 Remember The Mountain Bed You And I I'll Fight (w/Fred Armisen on maracas and tambourine) Born Alone Spiders (Kidsmoke) (acoustic arrangement) Whole Love Art Of Almost -------------------------
  9. Oh man, how it WISH it was a hotT (isn't that how it was?) roadie... I think one of those guys has a little too much responsibility (er, pride?) these days to be prancing around with a cowbell, but I'm certainly glad that Josh is around to pick up the slack!
  10. Meant to add earlier that they changed the second encore up a bit, playing Hoodoo Voodoo (with the long-awaited return of the shirtless roadie on cowbell) and Outtasite instead of the planned Dreamer In My Dreams. The printed setlist listed a second encore of Dreamer and The Lonely 1, so hopefully we'll get the former at either Metro or Lincoln Hall. And man oh man, finishing up with The Lonely 1—especially after a raucous pairing like Hoodoo>Outtasite—really does make for a devastating finale, doesn't it? On a personal note, I also thought to myself that this really was "the handclap
  11. Mayor Emanuel was in the house, and he got to see another really fun one... For now, just the complete setlist as played: One Sunday Morning> Hell Is Chrome> Art Of Almost I Might Muzzle Of Bees Hotel Arizona Radio Cure Born Alone At Least That's What You Said Rising Red Lung Say You Miss Me Wilco (the song) Capitol City Hesitating Beauty Summer Teeth Standing O A Magazine Called Sunset Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway(again) Dawned On Me ------------------------------- Whole Love Hate It Here You Never Know Theologians Casino Queen Kicking Television ------------------------------- H
  12. Just wanted to add that I don't think anyone would accuse the band of being especially "tight" last night—they had to start and restart I Must Be High and I'm Always In Love back-to-back after botched beginnings—but most people I talked to afterward seemed to prefer the Riv show to the Civic Opera gig. From a personal standpoint, the "vibe" at the Riv was just much better all around—and definitely more conducive to a rock show. And though I missed Nick Lowe as much as anybody and loved seeing Mavis Staples (and Nick and Jeff) sing The Weight, it didn't truly feel like Wilco was back at home
  13. A nice long set tonight (2 hours, 22 minutes, by my clock, with a total of 29 songs)... The complete setlist, as played: Less Than You Think> Art Of Almost I Might Black Moon Bull Black Nova Side With The Seeds Red-Eyed And Blue> I Got You (At The End of the Century) Born Alone You Are My Face Open Mind Kamera I Must Be High I'm Always In Love Capitol City> Handshake Drugs Can't Stand It Dawned On Me Hummingbird ------------------------- Via Chicago Whole Love The Late Greats Walken Just A Kid Monday> Outtasite (Outta Mind) --------------------------- Reservations> Spiders (
  14. Uhhhhh... Much as I would have liked to get snowed on and jingle some bells, that wasn't me. But I'm pretty sure I know who you're talking about.
  15. Those performances you mentioned were all Jeff solo shows, so I wasn't really thinking of those. Looks like the last time the full band played I Must Be High or Candyfloss before this past week was at the very end of the "Evening With..." tour back in April 2010 (I Must Be High on 4/10/10 and Candyfloss on 4/11/10, to be exact). And hey augurus, it was nice to finally meet you in person...
  16. For me, I'm A Wheel was less a surprise than both I Must be High and Candyfloss. Those were both played for the first time in a long time, I'm fairly certain. Possibly the first time this year, though I'd have to look it up to be sure.... I definitely enjoyed the trio that closed out the first encore. To me, Candyfloss>Standing O>I'm A Wheel is pretty much the band at its garagiest, if that makes any sense, and it was awesome! And then to have the Jesus of Cool come out and do Cruel To Be Kind with Wilco backing him and adding the harmony vocals and even that song's simple yet elegan
  17. A nice high-energy show to lead into the Chicago run... The complete setlist, as played: One Sunday Morning> Poor Places> Art Of Almost IATTBYH> I Might Misunderstood> Bull Black Nova Black Moon Impossible Germany Sky Blue Sky Forget The Flowers Born Alone Capitol City> Via Chicago I Must Be High Pot Kettle Black Dawned On Me A Shot in the Arm Hummingbird -------------------------- Whole Love Passenger Side Heavy Metal Drummer Candyfloss Standing O I'm A Wheel ---------------------------- Cruel To Be Kind [Nick Lowe] (w/ Nick Lowe on acoustic guitar and lead vocals)
  18. Huh? They didn't. It's on the setlist I posted above.
  19. Yeah, this is kind of a strange thread, isn't it? It's good to read that more than a few folks enjoyed the show. Honestly, you wouldn't have known that it was anything less than a solid show if you hadn't seen a bunch of others before, so it's cool that the people who were seeing the band for the first time seemed to enjoy it. For the more experienced fan, certainly it wasn't the band's finest night ever but as I think I wrote earlier, we really don't always know everything behind why some songs might get cut off a setlist or the various machinations that go on with putting on a show. Likely
  20. Yeah, forgot to mention that in my haste to post. Thanks for the reminder! Also I meant to say kudos to Nick Lowe, who changed up his set as much as I've seen him do throughout this tour with Wilco. This was his set, as played, in Milwaukee: Stoplight Roses Heart Long Limbed Girl Lately I've Let Things Slide All Men Are Liars I Live On A Battlefield I Read A Lot I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock 'n' Roll) Alison [Elvis Costello] When I Write The Book The Beast In Me
  21. Well that was fun! Very rare to hear both Outta Mind (Outta Sight) and Outtasite (Outta Mind) in the same show, much less the same encore. I thought the setlist was pretty darn strong; it definitely kept me off-balance for most of the night, which I consider a good thing. Anyway, more later maybe. For now, the complete setlist as played: One Sunday Morning> Poor Places> Art Of Almost I Might Misunderstood IATTBYH> One Wing Rising Red Lung Impossible Germany Far, Far Away California Stars Kamera Born Alone Capitol City Can't Stand It War On War Dawned On Me I'm Always In Love ----
  22. To slightly amend my previous post: Apparently what happened was there was an extra row of seats in the pit that wasn't anticipated when they ticketed the show, so the band and show organizers decided to use the opportunity to do a nice thing like upgrading people who had obstructed views or were seated in the back of the balcony. So one of the band's crew members was sent out to distribute these "upgraded" tickets. It does happen on rare occasions, as I mentioned. But I stand by what I wrote earlier about people not being picked based on their appearance or gender or age. And as for rusti

    Detroit

I know for a fact that they did sell FastLane tickets for the Detroit show. They probably took the option off the ticketing page once they sold out of them. Who knows how it'll work, but I guess we'll find out soon...
  24. The $5 bar early entry thing in Kansas City was something creepy done by the venue--the band had absolutely nothing to do with it--and that's why I think Jeff felt compelled to say something about it. The upgrading of people by representatives of the band is something I've only ever heard of happening once or twice at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago a long time ago when a few people who were sitting in the last row of the upper-most balcony got a nice surprise. But it's not something that happens often, so while I can believe it might happen, I'm still a bit dubious that what's being des
