I just gave it two full listens, and I am very pleased with it. I was worried this was going to be in the vein of "Ode to Joy," but it is not. There are a lot of highlights on this album. At least nine of the ten tracks grabbed me right away.

But at the same time I do think there's very clear melodic succession to OTJ. I think the melody on Infinite Surprise definitely takes a bit from Quiet Amplifier specifically the cadence.

The only track I'm not googley-eyed over is Ten Dead. It's *fine* but didn't make me say "yeah buddy!" after it was over. Granted, I've only listened to the record 4 times so far.

Really looking forward to this. Not that I didn't like Cruel Country — I did, for the most part — but my level of anticipation for this one feels higher. Anyone think they might get it out by this fall?

I think, probably fall, maybe early 2024 after the holidays, given the way their touring schedule takes a bit of hiatus towards the end of any given calendar year. They’ll prob announce something a SBS, if I was a gambling type of lady I would probably bet on it.

Wow, episode 7 with Spiders (Kidsmoke) the soundtrack to the kitchen chaos was stunning. I hope season 2 is as good as season 1 was & they don't ruin it.

Me too. I loved it— my sister worked in restaurants for years and said it was pretty accurate in terms of chaos sometimes.

  4. It’s finally happened and I can’t connect with this album. I’m listening it just doesn’t spark for me. I don’t know why. I feel sad about not loving it and also guilty for not feeling anything other than “meh” about it. Hmm.

  5. I remember going to the library in high school claiming to need to "research" to check the forums daily because our dial-up internet at home was too slow. Getting lost in the RTTs and the endless strings of hilarious jokes and random stuff. Spending hours pouring over show reviews and new album break downs.

I remember running from the bus to the mail box after school to check for new B&P shows in the mail, or demos, or album leaks.

This place definitely played a huge part in my musical education, and expanding my horizons to new sounds and ideas.

I really believe this tiny little corner of the internet helped me grow into who I am today.

The generosity of VC'ers led me into being able to expand my musical abilities and develop some guitar skills I otherwise would not have had an opportunity to try. I'll always remember that, and still 15+ years later it means so much to me.

It's harder these days to keep up with everything, but I think about everybody often.

  6. Was there.
felt guilty the entire time being at a show during these times we’re in with the Great Unpleasantness that is COVID.

The show was exactly what I expected for a festival set from them. No surprises.
sound on the rail was absolutely garbage though. Totally unbalanced and I guess that’s also to be expected for an outdoor stage in a park with no dedicated set up for music — or maybe I just forgot how loud live music is. Glad we brought earplugs for Sunday after I got sick from the loudness and bass Saturday…

anyway I was stoked for Wilco to come even though I doubt they’ll ever return and I’m sure I’m hindsight in several years i’ll be glad to have been there, but right now I’m not sure how I feel having a show I’ve dreamed of happening for 20 freakin’ years being in the rear view.

I think you're right on this, unless a resurgence occurs.

Sarah, how perfect for you and Matt, and at a romantic site to boot! And will you be joining the band for something? :spider3

Lolol I doubt Jeff remembers we were gonna do that. If I see him maybe I’ll be brave and ask.

Is that the River Fest, or something like that?  My wife and I drove up to Chattanooga in the '90s while that festival was going on, just as a coincidence.  When we pulled into the Aquarium parking around lunchtime the sound crew was blasting King Crimson to test the PA system.  Later that night we got to see James Brown from outside the fence.

Noooo… you’re thinking riverbend! That festival finally kicked the bucket after over 30 years or something. I have great memories from going as a kid, but the last 10 years or so they were booking awful acts. We used to sneak in through the aquarium loading docks after work.
the festival Wilco is playing is moon river. It was originally in Memphis, but I think it outgrew where they were having it, so it moved to Chattanooga for some reason.
i actually got to perform on the kids stage there in 2019. I had written a bunch of songs about animals for my job at the aquarium.

  9. Holy shit. They're headlining a small fest here in Chattanooga in September. Holy shit.
I have to figure out how to afford tickets.

It's at a little park downtown-- where my husband and I had our first date. The 2nd time ever Wilco will have played Chattanooga. The first was 1999 at The Bay (a heavy metal club that I never actually got to go to, because I was 11 in 1999).

  10. Lost my job today.

    Been there 14 years.

    Started when I was 19.

I guess I file for unemployment and hope they hire me back when we go back to normal living? I don’t know what to do. Face hurts from crying. Terrified they’re gonna lay my husband off too.

  11. One interesting thing to note that was a little unusual, Jeff was having a little bit of trouble with his acoustic guitar cable throughout the night, not sure if anybody else heard it, but it was kinda buzzy several times, and he had to have Matrix fix it a couple times. Kinda sounded like the connection was going out a bit.

Also, during Misunderstood, I thought it was awesome they had a matching chorus-ey effect on Jeff’s guitar and vocals. It sounded more like the original recording (ps- I counted 32 nothing’s).

Definite highlight was Casino Queen watching Nels and Brian switch off leads was so great!

Also, is there anything better than Nova > Cat?? I danced so hard I almost fell over!!

So sad this was our last show for a long time, but dang the memories will be there forever. ❤️

  12. Funny you should mention that.

At the in-store performance they did at Grimey's in Nashville, they were all 6 crammed into a tiny platform maybe 12x8 feet? Small amps for Nels, Jeff, John, Pat... keys for Mike and Pat... small kit for Glenn. 2-3 guitars each for Nels and Jeff. This was NOT a hootenanny setup. Played 7-8 songs, mostly new ones. All sounded just about like the full versions later that night, although Glenn clearly didn't have his full set of doodads ("accoutrements" per Jeff).

Jeff mentioned at one point in the set something like "If this is all it takes for us, we're gonna start touring in a VAN from now on!"

(and yes, the crew unloaded that batch of equipment from a van before the bus showed up....)

Fairly certain it was their rehearsal room set up that they use prior to every show.

  13. Went last night after having seen many shows since 2004. While, yes, the music was predictably professional, creative and amazing I found the whole experience to be a bit of a characiture of itself. It felt like being in a Disney world exhibit - "wilco: the concert experience." Perhaps it was the all white (albeit one), predominantly male, aging hipster makeup of the audience, an audience whose beards are now slightly more well kempt, whose clothes are slightly more expensive, whose lives are, one could imagine, more stable than than years gone by. My girlfriend helped elucidate how very Male the energy was in the place and it didnt help being surrounded by drunk bros having love fests with themselves in scenes that snl would have been hard put to improve.Or maybe it was the balding late thirties man in a plaid button down pogoing in the front row as if this was lounge ax c. 2000. I felt bad for the band having to play. For jeff standing in as a substitute for the chaos and creativity and defiance we subdue. But of course jeff himself has softened and calmed over time himself. Likely it was all my projections and personal losses and I sound like just another schmuck pining for the glory days when things felt edgier and hope could be scraped out of three hours with a band I adored.

Why are you trying to squash other people’s fun? Pogoing guy was having fun...who cares how old he is or what he’s wearing? It sounds like it’s more a you issue than a band issue... if they didn’t wanna play shows, don’t you think they’d stop touring so consistently? They play cos they like it, they’re professionals at what they do, yes, but they obviously still get something out of it, too.
