  1. I thought Jeff did a great job last night given the circumstances. I was sad he wasn’t feeling 100%, but really glad he felt well enough to play. Food poisoning is awful. Hopefully the day off today will give him a chance to really rest.

The show was only the 2nd time Jeff’s been through Chattanooga I think. The first was in 1999 at the now-defunct club The Bay (I was 11 then, and a year out from discovering Wilco, so I missed it!) so it was pretty thrilling when this show got announced back in January. The Walker Theatre is a fairly recent renovation in the Memorial Auditorium complex. I think they’ve only been hosting shows for maybe 2 years? It’s only the 2nd time I’ve been there...

I was really happy to hear “Ashes Of American Flags”, and of course all the tunes from Warm and Warmer that have been staples on the tour. “Evergreen” is gorgeous. I can’t wait to actually hear the album versions.

Jeff has always been so nice to me. I can’t really say much else other than I’m kinda shocked he thinks as highly of me as I do of him, and it’s so special. It was really amazing to be able to sing last night. I was a little nervous because a theatre of 800 is nothing to sneeze at, but I thought we did well. I hope that I did the song justice, and I hope that it might help Jeff forget about how much it stinks to play when you don’t feel well.

Maybe having a solo tour stop bodes well for the routing of future wilco tours? A gal can dream.

The thing he said about wearing his tightest underpants but loosest pants made me cackle. I was pleasantly surprised nobody acted ridiculous and the heckling was rather sparse... where I was sitting the sing along parts were pretty good too. Chattanooga crowds tend to socialize more than listen sometimes, so I was thrilled the majority of folks there had their listening ears on.

On a personal note, I was able to gift Jeff and the crew some artwork made by some of the aquarium animals here, and that was really special. Everybody seemed really tickled about it, and it was nice to be able to give them all something to remember Chattanooga. I hope they’ll come back one day (also it was very odd not to have to drive 2+ hours after the gig).

Here’s video of our duet, in case anybody missed the post I made and cares to listen.

  2. Jeff Tweedy, in addition to being the sweetest human being ever, is an astounding professional. Despite not feeling 100% because of food poisoning he put on a very nice show in Chattanooga tonight (I’m sure there will be a report later in After The Show).

I know we don’t really share a lot of video around here, but I have to share this.

Tonight I got to live a dream I’ve had since I was 13-years-old. I don’t really know what else to say besides I love Wilco and the community of people I have met as a result of them being around. Specifically all the people I’ve met as a result of this message board. I’ve known many of my Wilco pals longer than in-town friends and we truly feel like a family.

So anyhow, tonight, I got to sing with Jeff, and I think it went well. He’s too nice to me.

    Warm fuzzies all around.

  3. I picked up Stroke Manor by The Minus 5 at RSD today. Lyrics from the song Jeff Tweedy wrote for Scott McCaughey are printed on the back cover:

Oh once upon a time I met a good man

A fellow both fresh and young

I'd try to tell you but I still don't understand

How he knows every song ever sung

Let's go play, let's go play again

Let's go play, rock and roll again

Once I woke him up on a Tuesday

A Tuesday that we all know

We watched the news and we cried all day

And then we made rock and roll

He said, let's go play, let's go play again

Come let's play, rock and roll again

Oh, I should build us a wooden ark

Wouldn't you rather live on an ocean of guitars

    Maybe you're not a believer

Some people say it's just noise

Maybe it's a fever that you haven't caught yet

"Cause you haven't met Scott McCaughey

Let's go play, let's go play again

Let's go play, rock and roll again

    Jeff Tweed, Nov. 2017

Is this to the tune of “Let’s go Rain”? Cos it sounds like it in my head. Also the bridge is the same.
  4. The sing-along was better at Grimey’s I think than the actual show. Grimey’s is such a great record store. I’ve learned a bunch about bands I wouldn’t otherwise have known just by visiting every time we’re in town. The folks that work there are so nice too, and I think they were just as thrilled Jeff came in as the rest of us. I was super excited he played my request. Also excited to finally know what the heck the open chords are in that song. I flipping LOVE that little silver guitar. It’s got so much personality.

I think partially the theatre had something to do with it. At least where I was it didn’t seem like many people were singing along. We did well on “Let’s Go Rain” though.

I was really glad to hear several songs I hadn’t heard yet on this tour. “Lost Love” was sweet.

Jeff sang a tag at the end of “Impossible Germany” and maybe I’ve forgotten, but has it always been there? 3-4 repeats of “this is what love is for”, but sang more like the guitar line? Am I crazy, because I don’t think I’ve ever heard him do it that way....

Either way, it was beautiful. That song hit me hardest last night for some reason, and I cried.

The banter about the spaceship was hilarious.

I also really enjoyed the little impromptu song Jeff made up 2-3 lines about being itchy from the latex allergy.

It kinda surprised me folks laughed at the wonky guitar bit in “Misunderstood”— I don’t know if I’ve ever heard anybody do that before.

Also, can we talk about how much James Elkington rips it up? I knew absolutely zero about him other than he played in the Tweedy band, and my gosh it was so cool to watch him play. Wish he could have played a little longer. I felt like he really got going on that song about losing your dog on acid in the English countryside.

  5. GA for Asheville and Macon and Front Center first row for Nashville.

    I can't be happier.

Glad that the GA shows are separated by 10 days so we don't have to camp out for spots 2 days in a row too!

  6. You’re playing Jesus Etc wrong if you think that it has really predictable chord changes unlike California Stars being just A-E-D-A.

On any given day it could be Shake It Off, What Light, Leave Me Like You Found Me, or I Thought I Held You.

I stand corrected... it has a really predictable melody at least to me cos I've heard it probably 700,000 times since 2001.

  7. Jesus Etc. is tied with California Stars

I'm just tired of hearing them nearly every show. Cali Stars is only ok when there's a guest playing on it, and then it's still kinda boring cos the guest just solos and goes about their night. Both have really predictable chord changes and often times the audience screws up the sing alongs. I'm grumpy about those 2 songs for sure.

Conversely, I could never ever ever get tired of ITMWLY.
