  1. I don't see anything wrong with pointing out the errors made by the victims, if only as a lesson to other people. I certainly don't blame this girl for what happened to her -- obviously it's the fault of the person that committed the crime. However, I think if there's anything good that can come out of something like this, it's that kids might learn that when they're parents warn them about going into unfamiliar/dangerous neighborhoods, about getting drunk, about not being aware of their surroundings, etc. that they are serious, and that there can be some pretty horrifying consequences. I think that to ignore the lapse in judgement that the victim makes for a missed opportunity to maybe prevent it from happening again by teaching people to be more careful. It's a lot easier to control our own actions than it is to control the actions of others, so why not take the opportunity to open up discussion about ways to limit the ways in which a person might make themself vulnerable?

  2. And that he looks fine! You people are crazy - he looks exactly the same as he always looks which is hardly heavy enough to think that his weight is as unhealthy as smoking.

Now, I couldn't care less how much he eats or how much he weighs, but he sure doesn't look exactly the same as he always has.

  3. Interestingly, the clutch hitting thing is something that the sabermatricians have never really reached a concensus on. Bill James's response to the question "Does clutch hitting exist?" has always been "maybe".

From today's Providence Journal, which clearly pulled the same stats as Lammycat's article:

"I'm still not sure exactly how to measure clutch hitting," Mnookin quotes James as saying in a 2005 conversation. "That doesn't mean it doesn't exist."

Mnookin then wrote: "Here James, generally an understated man, paused for a moment."

"Watching Ortiz," James said, "it's hard to think it doesn't."

So I guess that's still a "maybe," but leaning towards "yes."
