The first encore alone made the show for me. Magazine has been by far the song I've wanted to hear live most and never expected to, and coupled with Red Eyed it was pretty incredible. The closing song was actually Is That the Thanks I Get?

I really hope someone taped this. I saw them in Boston last June and thought it was great-but tonight blew that away. Even the Ghost songs were excellent and to be honest I'm usually bored to tears by that album.

Hello Everyone,

Just got back in from tonight's Fucking Brilliant Amazing show. I think we have another convert on our hands. I speak of my friend who has never seen them live and I made him all of the cds about 2 months ago to warm up. We were 10th row Mid Section on the floor and the crowd was pretty into it from where we were. Except it looked like the 1st 5 rows in the middle sat until the encore. Maybe they figured they were close enough. Anyways. Amazing setlist and overall top performance. I agree they topped June's Boston show from last year. Wait a sec......that show had I'm Always In Love, Misunderstood, Sunken Treasure and Outtasite (Outta Mind). Close call. Glad I got to hear At My Window Sad And Lonely, Foget The Flowers, Walken, Red Eyed & Blue - I Got You, and Is That The Thanks I Get?

Official Setlist Notes - I Got You was not on the setlist. Assuming they all know that these two songs go together like peanut butter and jelly. And Is That The Thanks I Get? was not on the printed setlist.

Post Show Shenanigans.................Well, about 15 of us waited for the band to come out until 12am. Jeff didn't come out. Earlier Mikael Jorgenson told me Jeff wasn't feeling well and was already on the tour bus sleeping. And I asked is that why he didn't say much tonight. He replied "well that's usually the sign that the show is going really well." As far as he knows the Brooklyn show in July is just an internet rumour. Also, he mentioned that Wilco will do a Canadian tour from "west to east in July." Lucky Canucks. He expects the new album this time next year. He said it's "wishful thinking" for it to come out before. He even mentioned that he thought that Walken "started out too quickly tonight". Than I thanked him and he went to grab a bite to eat.

Finally Pat, John, Glenn and Nels came out and greeted the fans.

I got Nels' autograph and he was extremely nice (as was Mikael). Told him his guitar playing is fucking awesome and thanks for being in the band.

Than I spoke to Glenn and told him I loved his drumming and asked if the Brown show would be short due to 2 opening bands. He said "that's a college show." And I replied "Yea, I know. I just graduated college. I'm not that old". At which point he seemed embarassed, but I quickly told him I'm only kidding.

He said as far as he knows "We're playing a full set." Got his autograph and once again he was extremely nice and down to earth as everyone else. Didn't get to ask about the new record, but I did get to ask Pat.

Pat said the new record is "coming along." Told him I loved how The Good Part sounds and thanked him for letting folks tape the shows for fans so we can know the new songs. I asked him and Mikael (earlier) if Wilco is coming to Boston in July and they both don't think so. Got his autograph as John walked up the street with a small group or maybe it was his new wife.

Well, this is all from memory 4 hours ago. So everything is accurate except stuff like when the new album will come out. Which could be earlier than Mikael thinks. Wishful Thinking indeed.

I have met Jeff twice before (portland 04/northampton 05). He is gracious and amazing. 2 autographs and a nice pic of him and me. I wish my friend could've met him but I understand that he needs rest for the rest of the week. But I hope he feels better and damn he doesn't show it on stage.

Good Night and Good Luck,

Kristofor

PS I think I was sitting in front of John's In-Laws. The same couple came out from backstage with John. Someone mentioned that they got John Stiratt's In-Laws autographs. The "mother-in-law" came over to me when I was talking to Glenn and said to me "I know this guy enjoyed the show." To which I replied "Sorry if I blocked your view ma'am." So if that is indeed John's In-Laws than they got 11th row. :D

If anyone cares and made it down this far, I know I like to know these things about fans. This was my 7th Wilco show. I've seen Tweedy solo once.

I was in the balcony last night in Portland and thought the show was amazing. My only concern was the enthusiasm of the audience. Are there no dancing rules at this particular theater? I saw people dancing down on the floor, but everyone else was sitting down as if they were about to fall asleep. I have been to shows in other cities and this would NEVER be the norm anywhere else. I almost felt like I was at a busniess conference and had to sit cross legged. The saddest part is I was watching this one guy getting jiggy with it and the staff member made him sit down....come on people! This isn't Iran! In the united States we are allowed to express ourselves....I know that if Jeff Tweedy had seen this action he would have been pissed. I also know that he likes it when people dance and sing. He even said so last night! Whipcreamy gives the show an A+. Whipcreamy gives the crowd a C-. Come on Portland, as Jeff would say, Make it better!

On another note, how can I get a copy of this show?

Magzine Called Sunset and Ashes Of American Flags where my highlights, I really wanted to see both live. I was down on the floor about 10 row back and right of the stage on the edge. Everyone was up and every time people danced in the walkways security went nuts. Durring Forget The Flowers, security made a guy put his camera away, which pissed me off. The jam after Ashes was great, I think Nels is a machine. I have not listened to a ton of live shows on CD, but Kingpin had a more rocking arrangement. Spiders was nuts and it went on past the final verses. All in all it was a great 1st show for me. BTW there was a taper up frount to the right.

And of course there was a pretty distinct mic by the sound board.

Sunset made my night, though I was hoping for some AM lovin' especially since some of the relatively recent setlists had a few from back then. At least one other gentleman shared my sentiments when he kept shouting out "CASINO QUEEEEEEEEN!" and "GOTTA BOX FULLA LETTERS!!!"

Amazing show. I'm starting to get the feeling that Jeff is trying to become the next Bono with his singing for world peace and urge to make everything better...

PS: I'll never forget Gustafer Yellowgold. The most ridiculous thing I've ever seen, and would've been better suited on a bill with the Flaming Lips, but it was interesting to say the least.

Hey,

I almost forgot about mentioning Gustafer Yellowgold.

He was a cross between Mr. Rogers on every drug in the book (lyric, idea and presentation wise) and Jon Cryer in Pretty In Pink (voice and mannerism wise).

I give the guy credit though as some hecklers in the audience were given a very loud scream of

"SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!" by a closet Gustafer Yellowgold fan. It was like across the aisle. But yea he kept on singing his Peter, Paul, and Mary tunes.

Thanks,

Kristofor

As for tid bits on the new record...

He (Mike) expects the new album this time next year. He said it's "wishful thinking" for it to come out before.

Pat said the new record is "coming along."

Hummm....

I was sitting/standing in the first row on the left side and security must have walked past us about 20-30 times going after people who were in the aisles. It was pretty annoying especially since they kept bumping into my friends girlfriend the entire time without saying anything.

It was pretty weird that the front rows on the left and right stood for the entire show, but the first 5 rows in the center didn't until the very end.

Awesome show overall though (my third time seeing them). Tweedy did look a little tired at the beginning in my opinion, which would make sense that he wasn't feeling well, but he definitely made up for it by playing his heart out the entire show.

Hey,

Basically these 4 college aged kids (on the back left side of the venue) kept screaming out questions about the song titles. Like "We don't know what a blue fairy is?" Stuff along those lines. It was pretty loud and obnoxious.

Thanks,

Kristofor

Great concert. Great sound. Cool old beautiful venue. High quality PA (Adamson) which Stan had tweaked just right. Fun city.

My only complaint was the level of security. Getting in was normal, but there were about 8 mongo-sized humans roaming the floor making people stop taking photos with anything other than a cell phone. I found it almost comical watching 4 big 'event staff'er's closing in on unsuspecting 20-something woman who had pulled out her camera for a (non flash) pic of JT. These guys would have been much better suited throwing drunks out of a metal show up the street at the State Theater.

Just my 2 cents.

Man...those huge bouncer-type dudes REALLY REALLY bummed me out. I was in the 6th row and they kept threatening to throw me and my friend out for dancing. They were REALLY mean and obnoxious and thought they were oh so special. We had a MUCH better time in Asheville at the October show there. So even though I thought the Portland show was great...I don't think I'll be going back to the Merrill Aud. anytime soon.

In case no one else has made the connection, Morgan Taylor (aka Gustafer Yellowgold) has recently been the bassist for Autumn Defense. I wish I had known who the heck he was before going to the show because I would've been a bit more interested.

I took as many pictures until my camera's memory card filled up and wasn't harrassed by any staff. The problem with the venue is that (as one might expect) it's primarily for theatre productions and symphonies, and the other night's show was probably their first "rock" show and these dunces didn't understand that the same rules didn't apply. It was quite humorous to see the myriad of white-haired elderly ladies and gentlemen on the theatre's staff though, unsuspecting of what was about to occur...

A friend of mine who loves Wilco told me that Jeff Tweedy doesn't like it when people take his picture...apparetnly he yelled at an audience member a while back stating that he was not an animal in a zoo. So I don't care that security told people to put their cameras down, but the dancing thing was LAME!!!! NO PUN INTENDED!

I was almost tackled by a gargantuan security guard when i tossed my band's cd to jeff tweedy (who approvingly smiled). They surely overdid it with the jumpers (though i was thankful for the fact that they were there when those who loudly disapproved of Gustafer Yellowgold were thrown out).
