MrRain422
I don't know, I sort of want to know what these songs sound like with Scarlett Johansson singing them before I can really pass judgement.

timbits
wow...my first impression is that these are some of the strongest songs i've ever heard from Tom. i already know it's gonna be a close call betweeen this and Modern Times for my favorite this year.
JeffTweedysFatStomach
This is way better than Modern Times. Does it really qualify for best of the year though as it isn't a cohesive album rather than a collection of songs?
timbits
gee, let me consult the official rules and i'll get back to you.
sunken treasure
ugh....i'm trying to hold off until I have a real copy in my hands with the artwork and Tom's liner notes..... this is tough.
mastershake
This is way better than Modern Times.i disagree. modern times far above anything released this year so far, including this album.
mjpuczko
i disagree. modern times far above anything released this year so far, including this album. you must have at least 100 posts to form an opinion here. sheesh
JeffTweedysFatStomach
This is my 100th post so I am now beginning to formulate an opinion. But, as far as Orphans goes, I know its more of a collection but I almost wish it was sequenced to mix things up a bit more. However, I guess the disc titles of brawlers, bawlers, and bastards are just too good to NOT use. Anyways, I think there are some GREAT ones on here and some not so hot - I really dislike Road to Peace. Assuming everyone is downloading the same leak - I love the "Missing My Son" outtake. RainDogToo
For me "Brawlers" is my favorite disc "Lie to me" is the best album opener I've heard in a long time. The whole disc just ROCKS!!!! it truly is a great listen "Lowdown" is a great rocker "Fish in a Jailhouse" is just genius and I just love "Buzz Fledderjohn" and "2:19" as for the rest of the discs I'm listening to them slow but so far the whole thing is just a great recording and is worth every penny when it comes out in November. This blows the fuck out of MT. Sidebar: has anybody spoken to a real Dylan fan who actually thinks the new record is even in the same stratosphere as L&T and TOOM? I'm just curious, because it's shite compared to those two.

Sidebar: has anybody spoken to a real Dylan fan who actually thinks the new record is even in the same stratosphere as L&T and TOOM? I'm just curious, because it's shite compared to those two.well... i'm a "real" Dylan fan, and it might just be my favorite of the 3... they're all really strong though, but i'd say i definitely like it more than TOOM for now (that one, save for a few songs, i rarely listen to anymore). i like that he's having fun, it makes me happy. timbits
yeah, i too am a "real" fan, and i do think it's better than the last two. is that ok? or should i have cleared it with you first?

Derek Phillips
Real fans ONLY listen to Empire Burlesque, posers.
mjpuczko
ha, actually for a week or two that is the only album i listened to.
TheMaker
I like Planet Waves better than BoB, too. The difference between it and Modern Times is that Planet Waves is good. yeah, i too am a "real" fan, and i do think it's better than the last two. is that ok? Sure, if you like your records fat with filler and uninspired lyrics. I'm not in charge of these things...
timbits
hmmm...so whose in charge of you being a self-righteous prick?
solace
yeah, the lyrics to Working Man Blues and Nettie Moore are definitely uninspired...

I'm a "real" Dylan fan and I would put Modern Times alongside any other disc Dylan has released. It's a classic in my book and I like it TONS more than L & T. For the singing alone, it should be praised by Dylan fanatics. "Beyond the Horizen" has become one of my all time favorites. I would have loved to hear Sinatra try that one.... TheMaker
Which parts of the singing? The ones where he tears the shit out of his throat, or the ones where he wheezes? The press is an amazing thing, really. What's most impressive about it is the way it seems to constantly devour its own tail. Just because a hundred uninspired hacks write that Dylan's singing is "much improved" on his new record, that doesn't make it so. Likewise, if an established artist, i.e. Dylan, turns in a set of songs that's mostly an assemblage of blues cliches, homages and swipes, and the press happens to turn a blind eye to his multitudinous sources, that doesn't mean we have to blithely follow suit. "Oh, if there's an original thought out there, I could use it right now!" You said it, Bobby. If you can listen to MT and TOOM back to back and tell me with a straight face that the latter isn't twenty times more impressive than the former in every respect, then I'm sorry, but you're either deaf or retarded. Objectively, MT is probably one of the ten or fifteen least impressive records Dylan has ever cut. It's not as terrible as the '80s dross, but it certainly doesn't even come close to scaling the heights of his '90s greatness.
