Recommended Posts

Right after Christmas I am going on the road tripof a lifteime. My friend is moving out to seattle from Chicago and me and her are gonna drive her stuff out there. We are going to drive south of chiago through Missori, okalahoma, texas, new mexico, arizon (traveling through the northern parts of these states) then driving up the california coast through oregon to seatle. Were giong out of the way to avoide the moutians and snow.

We have from dec.29-jan.22 to do whatever we want on the road so were gonna take our time. I plan on spending an extened period in san fransico.

We are trying to put together a list of places to vist, So I was wondering if you guys could give me some dead (60's) related sites to vist in san fransico and just cool places in general. As of now we know we want to goto amobea, city lights, 710 haight. If you guys can think of anywhere for us to vist we would appericate it. If this goes well im gonna post other cities we'll be visting.

Thanks in advance for the help,

Matt

ETA:we may hit that moby grape reuion if we are in town.

My brother was in SF not long ago, and he said the Haight (which was once a rundown, low-rent area) is now totally yuppified.

If I were there I'd go to the North Beach area, which is famous for the City of Lights Bookstore. It was a big gathering place for Kerouac, Ginsberg, and store founder Ferlinghetti, among others.

[EDIT]

I see you've got it covered. Never mind!

North Beach is pretty yuppified as well, but still worth a visit, as is the Haight.

North Beach is a must if you love coffee and books. :monkey :coffeecup

And definitely take gogo's advice about the Fillmore. You won't be sorry.

If you're driving up the coast, check out Patrick's Point State Park (north of Eureka, CA) and the beaches along the OR coast (great storm watching in the winter months). The dunes are pretty cool too.

If you're passing through Portland, be sure to drop by Powell's Books. In Seattle, the area in and around the Pike Place Market is always fun to explore. There's also a nice guitar shop not far away (near Pioneer Square?). The EMP is worth a visit as well.

Some other SF stuff: be sure to spend some time in the Mission. And plan on eating while you're there. Everything from fancy-schmancy and oh-so-hip restaurants, to hole-in-the-wall taquerias; you can't go wrong. See a movie at the Roxie, then stand outside, turn around three times with your eyes closed, and walk in whichever direction you end up facing. You will be certain to be pointed at a great restaurant. Also in the Mission, I'm a big fan of the Pirate Supply Store at 826 Valencia, and the mural tours given by Precita Eyes (unless you're really interested in the process of making murals, do the one without the slide show before, just go straight to the murals).

I'll also put in my usual plug for my own neighborhood, the Inner Sunset. Not so much with the hip and fancy restaurants, but the eating's nearly as good as in the Mission, anyway. LOTS of sushi places, if you're into that. And, it's the next neighborhood from the Haight, if you walk into Golden Gate Park from the end of Haight Street, specifically if you're heading to any of the major museums and gardens, you'll almost certainly come out of the park at about 9th and Lincoln, and there you are. You can also walk up the hill a little bit to the UCSF Medical Center, where you'll find one of my favorite views of the city, from behind the 400 Parnassus building.

The Mission is the best place as far as stuff to do thats not so touristy. Visit the Pirate Shop. I saw Dave Eggers there a few times. And go hang out at Dolores Park at 18th and Dolores, it is one of the best parks with a great view of the city. I highly suggest Taqueria Cancun at 19th and Mission. Or Naan n Curry at Haight and Filmore (i think)

I would also suggest Golden Gate Park, its an incredible park with lots of hippies and bums hanging out, especially on Saturday afternoon when they bring their tribal drums out and go crazy.

And when I lived on Haight this summer, it didnt come off yuppie so much. I would consider North Beach to be way more so. If you love the beat culture, definitely check out City Lights in North Beach, and all of North Beach. I highly recommend reading lots of Jack Kerouac before you head out there, or while you are on your way out there. It will get so enthusiastic about everything.

I MISS SAN FRANCISCO GODDAMMIT
