Sir Stewart
Go ahead and disagree, because I know many people will love whatever Wilco put out, and many people just starting listening with AGIB and think they're witnessing the peak......and many people actually like what they're hearing. Sir Stewart
*(ATOT)doesn't the asterisk belong after the period?
caliber66
Probably. I totally rushed that.
LouisvilleGreg
With just over a month to go until May 15th I'm sure I'm in the 1% who still has not listened, though I've heard about half of the album live full band or solo. I'm still very worried about not liking it, but I guess they are due to let me down. No other band that has been around over a decade has ever not done so by this point. You Can Be The Stone
I agree with the above post, I don't really like anything on this album. Most of it is ok and listenable, but I've concluded that whatever was there that made Wilco (Summerteeth/YHF) magical is gone. I think it goes back to Bennett being gone... I believe he was half the recipe. I will still see Jeff solo, he still seems to be amazing by himself, but I don't think I'll be seeing Wilco on tour. The new lineup sounds way too polished and soulless, and it shows on this album. Specifically on the new album, some of the vocal melodies are probably not that far off from they would have been with the band a few years ago; but musically (instrumentally) the songs are not special. The guitar and piano are boring. Nowhere near the unexpected and completely unique melodies of summerteeth. Go ahead and disagree, because I know many people will love whatever Wilco put out, and many people just starting listening with AGIB and think they're witnessing the peak... but that's how I feel.  Summerteeth was a very neccessary step in Wilco's evolution, and for the time being, it was great, however, it wasn't neccessarily perfect either... I see the piano and guitar parts on SBS as direct, and to the point, the opposite of the Jay Bennett credo of production, which is if it can't be expressed with two guitar tracks and keyboards, then 20 guitar tracks and 16 mellotron parts will do. The whole album sounded too overproduced, too tense, it sounded like them trying too hard.
Atticus
My copy of SBS hasn't grown an inch

chad
i kept waiting for something to happen, and it never did. sbs is flat, linear, and boring. the only thing that they could have done to make it worse would have been to hire a pro to lay down some killer jazz flute licks to compliment nels' generous offering of noodle orgies and cluster notes. needless to say, i am very disappointed with the album. Just like Jay hating, must have something to do with lead guitar.

tongue-tied
you'll never hear me complain about jay. that's expected...but both are criticized for their "excess", whether it be nels improv and "jazzy" licks or jay's overdubs and onstage rockstar antics. both are pretty polarizing. or maybe it comes down to the dreads and the high socks, i don't know. chad
i'll be the first to admit that jay's somewhat of a creepy dude, but i never had a problem with any of his contributions musically. stage antics can be a turn-off, but at the end of the day, it's just not worth caring about. it's hard to blame nels for his playing.. the dude's just doing what he's good at. it's just a shame that it's been allowed to go on in such excess. Guest tandylacker
A lot of negative posts by people with fewer than thirty posts. Honestly I like the CD probably about as much as Being There. Much like Being There, I'm going to give it several listens and enjoy myself thoroughly. I don't even own a copy of Being There anymore, I guess it got stolen. That's probably what I would say about SBS ten years from now if it were to have come out while I was in high school. Maybe this CD is as great as the last few, but come on. Wilco's music really has just been getting better and better since they started. If they would have topped AGIB, I would be thinking JT sold his soul to the devil. As far as Nels Cline goes... He's pretentious. But Jay Bennett, he's a pretentious douche bag. Nels is a polished guitar player, Jay's the fat guy that only looks like he's employed at a local guitar store--turns out he just no where else to go.  There is no question that Wilco has slowly, but surely become a super band. Collecting some of the best musicians out there. And to have the 6 of them sit around and write/record this album combining their knowledge of music and song writing--then let me listen in for fifteen bucks. Well that ain't half bad. This post was written over a span of about 30 minutes. So I apologize for my detached thoughts.

caliber66
A lot of negative posts by people with fewer than thirty posts. That's just about as ridiculous and arbitrary a criticism as you can get. That some posters who have negative things to say about the album have fewer than thirty posts makes their opinions no less valid. There are plenty of posters who like the new album, and have only a handful of posts. Do you discount their opinions as well? As far as Nels Cline goes... He's pretentious. But Jay Bennett, he's a pretentious douche bag. Nels is a polished guitar player, Jay's the fat guy that only looks like he's employed at a local guitar store--turns out he just no where else to go.You dump on people for the sin of not being longtime posters, and then you cite Jay's appearance as one reason for your dismissal of him. Awesome. Both Jay and Nels are very talented guitar players. Neither would be where they are today without Wilco.
