zune, from microsoft

I didn't buy a zune when they came out because of the apple fanboys and their negative reviews of the product.

Zune is so much better than in ipod. The whole wireless transfer thing is completely ridiculous. But the rest of it, the built in radio, better interface, etc. Wonderful!

Does anyone care?

Well I do.

From where I stand right now, the differences in interface (although i've only played with a Zune briefly) seem pretty negligible either way and I don't listen to the radio... so the iPod wins out because the biggest one is bigger.

i listen to AM talk and NPR when i am driving. i don't care for the radio, which is why an ipod was a good idea for me. i don't like talking on my cell phone at all, so the idea of bundling a phone to an ipod seems as dumb (FOR ME) as bundling a radio tuner to the mp3 device.

The reasons I would never buy a Zune are legion.

Unfortunately, the most damning things I've read about this piece of shit no longer seem to be on line. I can, however, quote a portion of the article Andy Ihnatko wrote for the Sun-Times (thanks to BoingBoing):

Yes' date=' Microsoft's new Zune digital music player is just plain dreadful. I've spent a week setting this thing up and using it, and the overall experience is about as pleasant as having an airbag deploy in your face.

"Avoid," is my general message. The Zune is a square wheel, a product that's so absurd and so obviously immune to success that it evokes something akin to a sense of pity...

The Zune is a complete, humiliating failure. Toshiba's Gigabeat player, for example, is far more versatile, it has none of the Zune's limitations, and Amazon sells the 30-gig model for 40 bucks less.

Throw in the Zune's tail-wagging relationship with music publishers, and it almost becomes important that you encourage people not to buy one.[/quote']

I have to laugh at Apple fanboys. Until you work for the company, you really have no idea what fucking cocksuckers they really are. Pardon my French. Anyway, the Zune is a much better product. And what Apple doesn't like people knowing is that the brand-loyal consumers who buy their notebook and desktop computers aren't nearly as fierce when it comes to the iPod. So nyah nyah neener, iPod losers.

KNEEL BEFORE ZUNE!

OK. Putting aside all the geegaws and funky features, does this Zune actually sound better than an iPod?

from every report i've heard and read it's a piece of shit compared to the ipod.

also, i know several people who work for apple and love working for them.

i think there's just an enclave of people who refuse to acknowledge that apple might happen to do some things better. i have friends like that. but even they've conceded the ipod is the best product of its kind.

Anyway, the Zune is a much better product.

I'm with you on your iPod comments, but what in the heck makes you think the Zune is any good?

The best digital music players aren't made by Apple OR Microsoft. If you want a player that only plays what its manufacturer wants you to play, get an iPod or a Zune. If you want to be able to play whatever the fuck you want on your player, go elsewhere.

Got to love the Zune.

There is no way any of you could possibly own/use a Zune and think, "This thing is a piece of shit compared to an iPod." Microsoft truly did a good job with Zune. And as far as the supporting Microsoft is like supporting the Yankees goes--do you really think Apple is some sort of 'little guy' company? Microsoft obviously has Bill Gates, extremely rich, but a nice guy. Its not like killing bunnies to make their software. Apple is a huge company, they are not some indie computer company. They are the only computer company that does not truly support the 'indie computer geeks.' You can't build your own apple computer. You have to pay their ridiculously high prices if you want one.

The reason why Windows and Microsoft get so much shit from consumers is because people go and buy the $600 Dell or HP or whatever computer from places like Best Buy and think its Microsofts fault for the computer crapping out in 6 months. Maybe Apple is right with not allowing people to make cheap versions of their computers, but Microsoft is making it possible for people to have the computer they want.

Compare a $2,500 computer running Windows and a typical $2,500 Apple computer and the Windows computer will blow away the Apple every time. I bought a computer with Windows about 2 years ago for about $1,500 from MPC Computers. They are a computer company down the street from me in Nampa, Idaho. They build extremely high quality computers. This computer has never frozen, always recognizes anything I plug into it. And still, to this day, is faster than the fastest Apple computer that they sell right now. And I've had it for 2 years.

Come on. Besides, everyone knows supporting the Yankees is like going to a casino and rooting for the House.

Personally, I'm not comparing the Zune to an iPod. They both have serious issues with file compatibility. I'm saying that if you want a player that really works for you, don't buy either one.

Also, I would merely note that you're one of the only people I've ever seen/heard who actually praises the Zune. It's been pretty universally derided.

for the vast majority of people, ipods are compatible with everything they need. I assume you're talking about about flac and/or ogg compatablitly? which most people couldn't care less about.

Yeah when they first came out I already had a iPod 30gb w/ video and didn't like a few things about it so superficially researched the Zune. Saw the bad reviews, everyone said it wasn't better than the iPod, so I gave up on it. Then I started getting real annoyed with my iPod and dug a little deeper, thought maybe the reviews were just butt-hurt Apple boys--turned out they were. Everyone either hates or loves the Zune. It must be the haters are iPod boys. I quit using Apple before the mandatory lobotomy, so I got out in time.

iPods are not compatible with windows media files and Zunes are not compatible with iTunes purchases. Makes the switch from iPod to Zune tough, not for me, I would never buy anything off iTunes. If your going to buy music, why not buy a CD... ?

Other than that though, they are both compatible with all the popular types of media files. Everything I had on my iPod transfered to the Zune just fine. iPod did, occasionally have problems playing VO encoded files I got from Oink. Zune has not had that problem. Other than that, haven't noticed any difference.

i drank the apple kool-aid a long time ago. my 6 year-old g4 is a hell of a lot more computer than my 4 year-old windows machine of comparable price. like so many things, it really depends on what you use them for. a corvette and a cube truck are both exceptional for what they do. if all you're doing is playing on the internet and writing papers for school, windows is a better value (between the two). if you're doing something requiring several applications at the same time, or ram intensive (audio/video), the mac architecture in allocating ram works better. it's not the processor, but the process.

as far as the ipod v. zune -- does it really matter? the first one to incorporate a long service plan with bluetooth headphones will likely win out. quality is irrelevant - beta was better than vhs. what matters is marketshare and people want durability over constant revisions. if you have a 3rd gen ipod in good working order, and want to buy a case for it, you're most likely shit out of luck. apple is blowing it with small, cosmetic changes and minor features. if they stress consistency and longevity, then back it up with 3 years instead of 1 under the free warranty, they'll crush zune. microsoft is the challenger in this platform and they have to offer a lot more than a brown case and temporary wireless transfers of songs. given microsoft's antitrust violations, they have a massive geek hurdle to overcome. the only reason apple is solvent again is the ipod. although apple is the 800 lb gorilla in the mp3 player market, it is the ipod alone that has kept them afloat. microsoft is a behemoth, and people like to bet on david over goliath. microsoft's product carries baggage that apple does not, for good or bad, so microsoft needs to make something much, much better than equally good if they want to compete.

and another thing -- will the zune work on my mac? nope. my ipod works on my mac and the windows machine i have at work. looking at zune's website - the software won't even work on all the older versions of windows (that LOTS of computers still run on). zune also has an accessibility hurdle to overcome that ipods do not have to deal with nearly as much.

Is anyone here running Vista anyway? My buddy got a new pc with Vista loaded and has had nothing but hassle with it. Problems getting online, file associations, general fuckery of the most annoying kind.

My parents just bought a new PC with Vista on it. It is like a big, clunk (and crappy looking) version of OS X mated with XP and made things just enough different to be confusing. And then came the warnings before I did anything, while I did anything, and after I did anything. I finally understand that Mac ad!
