Embarcadero_Skies
OK, perhaps reaching ultimate dorkiness in Wilco-fandom and netroots-dom, I think we need to draft a petition to get Jay Bennett back in Wilco. It's that simple. It's that obvious. Fellow fans, remember back to the Wilco documentary when they are jamming duel-guitars in the studio and JB says, Wow, that was awesome!! And Tweedy totally looks down his nose at him and says something like "Yeah that was cool to do for fun, but we talked about not using two guitars anymore"....And that was the beginning of the breakup. Let's put it this way: the new album sucks. I've never heard Tweedy be so dull and straight forward with his lyrics. Impossible Germany is the only decent song on the album. I'm so depressed that this album just came out and I'm already waiting for the follow up to Sky Blue Sky. I know AGIB is a good album, but I'm starting to feel that the Wilco I grew to love died with the firing of Jay Bennet. His creative influence and his magical production work is amazing on Summer Teeth and YHF. I wish Tweedy's ego could have handled the creative mixture that he had going with Jay. They almost had a Lennon/McCartney thing going towards the end of 2001 EDIT: since I'm getting personaly attacked for my account status, I want to make it clear that my old handle "pnyc" was deleted for inactivity because I havent been here since 2005. I probably sold many of you tickets for face here when I have extras...in the tri state area.
Basil II
I'm probably the Biggest JB fan here.......but uhmmmmmmm.... -Robert.
lost highway
No, no, no. They've been sans-Jay for years now, if you don't like where its going you should probably find another bands fan board to latch on to. And another thing is when Lennon and McCartney split up Lennon wrote Plastic Ono Band, and McCartney wrote Ram, Wilco wrote A Ghost Is Born and Bennett wrote whats the name of that album? (I know someone on here has got it)
Atticus
Historically bands are extremely prone to rearranging staff composition based on internet petitions. I say go for it.
Synthesizer Patel
I think you should spend some serious time putting together this petition of yours, and then get back to us. Or do you just wish to discuss the prospects of making one, for whatever reason?
Embarcadero_Skies
It's just a dream my friend, I wasn't serious about a petition. I just want people to remember how good Wilco was...I just hate their new direction. Most people discount A.M., and it's a gazillion times better than "SKY BLEW SKY"
Synthesizer Patel
Then why not just say that? I was getting all excited about a petition for a while back then!
heyjada
While IATTBYH offered some insight into the unraveling of their relationship, I don't think it's fair for any of us to use it as our basis for understanding what happened. It was probably just the tip of the iceberg. Watching their dialogue in the movie makes me nauseous and made me sort of happy to see him go. Oh, and Nels is better. Basil II
Bennett wrote whats the name of that album? (I know someone on here has got it) -The Palace At A.M-The Beloved Enemy-The Magnificent Defeat and two others which names escapes me.... -Robert.

I just want people to remember how good Wilco was...I just hate their new direction. Most people discount A.M., and it's a gazillion times better than "SKY BLEW SKY"Jay didn't play on A.M. Why are you here? to bitch? I mean I know these things are a little ridiculous but I get on this thing to talk with people about the band, not to hear some whiners construct banal arguments about how awful the band has gotten. Most people discount A.M., and it's a gazillion times better than "SKY BLEW SKY" If the Beatles would have kept the same sound that they had during HELP!, they would never have been what they had become. Not everyone liked Revolver or Sgt Peppers or anything that was different than what they had done previously. BANDS CHANGE AND GROW. Get over it. I agree that there is something lacking on this album compared to previous albums, and I think it's the production, not the songs/writing style.

There's a million threads here about a variety of topics. You don't have to read this one. He posted his opinion (a complaint, sure), to which he is entitled. Maybe his album is okay (not Ram or Plastic Ono Band) but I don't know if he's doing okay.Yeah, Palace isn't as good as Plastic Ono Band, but Wilco aren't the Beatles, either. I'm thinking probably that disc of Palace demos......-Robert.Good stuff - I have that out to put on my iPod one of these days... Embarcadero_Skies
So you honestly all, being WILCO fans...like this new album? And yes I know JB didnt play on AM. I was just making a point that most people don't like AM so I used it as an example. And I thougt I was a wilco dork... damn If the Beatles would have kept the same sound that they had during HELP!, they would never have been what they had become. Not everyone liked Revolver or Sgt Peppers or anything that was different than what they had done previously. BANDS CHANGE AND GROW. Get over it. You Can Be The Stone
I've never heard Tweedy be so dull and straight forward with his lyrics. I can imagine if it were 1973, when one of the greatest rock albums of all time came out, and calling these lyrics dull and banal; "Breathe / Breathe in the air / Don't be afraid to care" and demanding Syd Barrett's prompt return And other than that, Walken, What Light, Either Way, and Hate it Here are the only hit-you-over-the-head songs lyrically. You can dislike the album if you want, that's fine, but don't try and pretend that the other 8 songs are anywheres close to being simplistic. And if there are 4 out of 12 direct songs, so what? The earnesty and joy in Walken is far more moving and human than some of his esoteric, elusive wordplays on previous albums.

I was just making a point that most people don't like AM so I used it as an example. And I thougt I was a wilco dork... damnI like the new album just fine. Could it be better? Sure. I might even like to see Jay back in the band to see what he can do with it, but I'm not sure he's a good fit right now. Jeff has clearly moved on and isn't interested in going back to 1997. I'd also like to see Mike Heidorn and the Boquist brothers back in Son Volt, but I don't think that's gonna happen either.

Synthesizer Patel
The beatles never regressed. Tweedy has. Well that's not strictly true, is it? The White Album & Let It Be were back to basics - Let It Be, certainly so.
tapmyglass
So you honestly all, being WILCO fans...like this new album? I am a wilco fan, I can safely say I love this album. I dont find it any less complex, engaging, interesting, difficult, rewarding then any other wilco album.
