I really like SBS, i think it is a real 'grower', and the 20th time i listen to it is much better than the first, but there is still one part of the album that i can't get my head around: Shake It Off.

I like this song, the gentle jazzy start, Jeff's soft and nuanced vocals, are all excellent. And the transition around 1:30, where the keyboards enter and the band get into a deep groove, is superb.

But i just dont like the 'Shake it off' doodle-doo. doodle-doo. Doo-do, doo-doo bits. I find it dull and a bit crappy. Once this bit is over, the gentleness resumes and i can enjoy it again. The keyboards reenter around 4:00 and some sweet guitar work its nicely behind Jeff's voice...

...And then it goes back into the moronic 'Shake it off doodle-doo' bit once more.

why, guys? Why!?

It's right in the middle of the album and interrupts the flow, i dont like holding the 'skip' button for several seconds just to get back to the good bits. i dont like being on edge during the song, waiting for the bad bit to come around again.

And the same 70s monolithic rockgroove trick is used again in Hate it Here, but it works better in HIH because it's dressed up nicer.

Can someone create an edit of the song without these bits so i can enjoy the song?

That noise that you refer to in Shake it Off is distracting and seems out of place. I've thought that since the first listen. Besides those loud guitar parts, it's got a nice, mellow groove to it. What's with the power chords Jeff?

The noise in Hate it Here definitely seems out of place too. It is still a great track, though it would better if it were arranged a little more quietly. It's still one of my favs on the record.

BTW, I finally got around to watching the SIO DVD last night. Jeff looks and sounds great. I like how the focus of JT and the band was to keep things simple and "play songs for people" without complicating things. Good times.

That part goes round and round in my head all day. Consider that to be the chorus of the song...I'm really diggin it..

to quote myself...

Lots of people seem unsure about Shake It Off?! The first section reminds me of A Ghost is Born, with the obscure melody and unusual changes, which is great. Then it goes into that funky bit, which probably has the deepest groove on the album. It sounds like Stevie Wonder! It's great! Then it does what we might call the chorus, including that crazy but AWESOME broken-up rhythm bit (triplets?). It stopped me in my tracks, and just really demonstrates that Wilco still have a creative, irreverant approach to composing/arranging. (Although I think they rush those triplets on the loft performance on the DVD. I like em slow and clunking.)

are you really asking someone to re-edit this song? are you mental?

Maybe it's just me, but i still can't get into the chorus.

Those triplets just grate my nerves. Especially the accented hi-hat after each one. Doodle-doo , doodle-doo . To me, it doesnt seem irreverent or creative, it seems bereft of anything to put in its place.

But then, that is only my opinion. And opinions are like skin cells. Everyone has them, there are roughly eight layers, and they gradually shed themselves over time.

In byrd9999's Fantasy Wilco World, the song is edited and it makes my SBS album tracklist. Without the edit, the song's a b-side.

Oddly, those are my favorite parts of both of those songs.

if the part is what i'm thinking of, i agree completely...one of the best parts about that song. :thumbup

It's alright..Everyones ear is different. Certain sounds will attract you, while others won't. Sometimes you can pinpoint exactly why that is and sometimes you can't as you're simply just not that into it. Everyone has their own reasoning behind it I guess...

I honestly don't usually get defensive about peoples opinions, but I honestly do not understand where people are coming from at all when they say 'Shake It Off' sucks. It rocks great, and I think that the lyrics say more about where Jeff is at now in music than any of the other songs on Sky Blue Sky.

I don't know if I agree with everything I just said, but the lyrics and instrumentals rock in that song. I get the feeling that people who dislike this song are just trying to be difficult.

I don't like the song that much, and I'm not trying to be difficult, I promise. It just doesn't move me. Sorry.

I don't think I've ever 180d on a wilco song more. Couldn't stand it (i.e. skip to next track) when I first started listening. Now it's one of the first tracks I pick.

(and I don't have to try to be difficult, I was born and reared so)

:nono if you were going to post about jay in any thread, you should have stuck it into the 'sellout' thread (not because I think he is a sellout, but because it would just cause another fight that would turn that thread into a 40 page monster) and then maybe it would turn into the ultimate VC fighter challenge...
