Excellent show in Charlotte tonight. I took my wife to see Wilco for the first time. She likes YHF and Summerteeth quite a bit, but she is not so fond of Ghost (she hate Spiders!). She really enjoyed the show and said it was well worth the $70 we dropped on a sitter to watch the kids. She made particular note of Glenn

wow, what a great show in charlotte. my wife surprised me with front row and left of center tickects for fathers day. Yes, i was the moron that yelled "macramaniac" after a quite period. Jeff quickly took care of me by telling me that " youve ben waiting for just the right time to say that havent you". My wife wanted to crawl under the seat but it was all in good fun. I thought that opening with sunken treasure was amazing and set the stage for gems to follow. Lots of good banter and as a father of a 6 year old girl I thought it especially thoughtful how jeff entertained the little girl. these guys just get better and better. thanks so much

From where I was sitting the crowd was very respectful, hardly any chatterers. Not a verbose crowd but they seemed very into the show (mostly standing during the show).

ooooh, you're so lucky! wish i was sitting where you were! we had the most obnoxious girl behind us, came in late, kept asking everyone what songs she missed, why wouldn't we tell her, and then just kept talking as loud as she could to hear herself. we all politely asked her to stop on several occasions and she decided during sky blue sky she could try to start a fight about it. so amazing how helpful event staff can be, we didn't have any problems after that and were able to really enjoy the show.

it was great! lots of fun and good commentary from Jeff. what was that OWL!!!! so funny. great set, Spiders rocked, On and On was beautiful and then when they played always in love! so much fun!

on to DC!!!

first off: !!!!! :w00t :-O :banana

holy hell, that was a FANTASTIC SHOW!

i do believe that i danced out the stuffiness that has been threatening my sinuses since getting drenched last night.

oh man, i was all set to post the set list and realized i'd left it in the car. d'oh!

i can add a few things to notes to Len's post:

this show had serious momentum! a cooker, to be sure.

--during hummingbird jeff came out to the front of the stage and brought a girl (+/- 7 yrs old) up onto the stage and sang the song with her. at the break they danced together, jeff twirling her, then taking a bow as the band played the last notes.

set 2:

--I'M ALWAYS IN LOVE--!! :yay i have been hoping for this one all US tour. almost missed this show, am SO happy that i made it. -->

--spiders--MAN OH MAN

set 3:

--shot: ROCKIN ROCKIN SHOT.

--heavy metal drummer: much singing from the crowd!

tonight was the first time i've heard On & On & On live. manohmanohman. BEAUTIFUL. what a stunner. the man standing next to me was singing along, too.

personal show note: tonight i was dancing with such abandon. i was a little worried that i might be bugging some people. my seat was in the unoccupied handicapped seating area, so i had a wealth of space. people filled in during the show, we all danced and danced. i was keeping a set list. at one point the girl behind me asked if she could make a note on setlist. i said sure. after the show she commented how fun it was to be dancing with me. :banana :dancing outside the show another group who'd been in the same section approached me and said the same thing. when i got to the car, i read her note, it was a sweet comment about my enthusiam. :blush how incredibly cool and warm of these people.

--this was my last show until the band swings back tothe west coast. it kills me to miss what's coming next, but this was a TERRIFIC show to end my run on. EVERYONE was so friendly and helpful. :cheekkiss

--HUGE THANKS to VCer OuttaTune who encouraged me to make the drive to charlotte from atlanta and even stopped off at ovens to see if he could procure a ticket for me. :cheers :worship

--of special note: VC star sighting: jhamm! a total bonus on the night!

to cap off the night: picked up a pizza, found a hotel, turned on the tv just in time for the daily show/colbert report combo. fucking spectacular night! :party :banana :love

Awesome show!

I'm so glad they pulled out such gems as Sunken Treasure, I'm Always in Love, Shot in the Arm, and CA Stars. (It's been a while since we've heard this one live.) It made my friend Mary's (and mine) concert experience even more complete. Man o' man... I'm still high off the experience.

I loved watching the dancers... I think I could pick Ms Yvon out of a lineup, if they were all dancing! : )

Cheers!

Do you think Wilco will be doing another run through the southeast??? I sure hope so... maybe come autumn.

Can't wait to hear this show, and a big Thank You in advance for the tapers & their efforts! :thumbup

keep on rockin',

kevin

:worship What an awesome show. Lillac , "You rock little sista!" As usual we met many cool people at the show. I heard you Macramaniac, that was funny. Next week look on Wilco's website for a specialized poster for the Charlotte show. There was a shipping error, someone from the printing company sent the posters to the wrong place. The poster has an oven on it, get it, "OVENS" auditorium?" The band really seemed like they had a good time last night as well. Who has some audio Charlotte concert poster on Wilco's website next week.of the show, I saw several microphone stands.

Really killer show. Wish I'd known Tweedy was at Reedy Creek Park in Charlotte. Would have been cool to bump into him on the frisbee golf course, which he mentioned between songs.

Great encores, so much more energy than 2 years ago in Charlotte at Ovens. Crowd was really into it. The band sounded so tight.

Heavy Metal Drummer sounded excellent, better than on the album, and Handshake Drugs, as well as Hate It Here rocked.

Guitar is much tighter now, the band sounds like a true rock musicians, as they always have, but more jazzy and the solos were clean.

Was that his daughter he was dancing with? One poster said it was, but another aluded that it wasn't. He thanked her for dancing with him, so I think it was a random young girl.

How do I get a tape of the show, tapers?

Wanted to hear Poor Places???? and Pot Kettle Black? Do they play these often. Poor Places would be cool with the airplane sound effects and woman's voice recordings as on the album. Much more diverse crowd, of all ages and types, not just Wilco long time fans like 2 years ago. Hope they don't get too big too quick.

Great show! It was definitely worth the (3 hr) drive from Carrboro. I was thrilled that the crowd was well behaved enough that we didn't have an instant reply of Wilco's last trip to Ovens (great show but Jeff was in a terrible mood in response to some hecklers in the audience). It's interesting to see how diverse the "Wilco crowd" is ... gets more diverse each tour. I enjoy seeing the progression.

I think the little girl Jeff brought on stage was the same little girl he danced with during "Hummingbird" at the last Charlotte show (and possibly the Asheville show 2 years ago). If so, she is as cute as ever and is growing like a weed. It was fun to see Jeff do his little running-in-place dance (that he always does during "Hummingbird") with an enthusiastic dance partner. Other pleasant surprises: "Always in Love" (!!!) and closing with "Heavy Metal Drummer".

Only had one annoyance during the show and that was when I leaned over to whisper to my friend that I was going to run to the restroom, the girl in front of me hushed me. This was of course after putting up with her talking to her friend throughout the show. After the song (and my trip to the restroom) I kindly reminded her that should she feel the need to shush me again, I'd be happy to let the guard escort her back to her ACTUAL seats. We didn't have any problems after that. It wasn't a big deal, but it's things like that that make me wonder if someone should write a handout on concert etiquette and distribute it before shows. It seems like in modern times, people forget that you aren't supposed to talk during concerts (besides the occasional whisper of "right on", etc.), you aren't supposed to answer your cell phone (let alone have your ringer ON), it's rude to shout things when the singer is in the middle of chatting or singing, etc. etc.

But I digress... and anyway, complaining makes me feel old.

Great great show. I'm excited at the idea of seeing them multiple times supporting the new record so I hope they announce many more tour dates soon.

Also - did anyone else notice what I thought of as a "back to basics" stage setup? I felt like "Sky Blue Sky" was a back to the basics album (in that it didn't have quite as much noise and feedback and was a straight-ahead rock album - imho) and I thought it was cool that their live show seemed to carry that same back to basics feel: no backdrop, no movie/slide screen, pretty basic lighting, and the band seemed to be pretty compacted on stage - not as spread out as the last tour... set up more like they would be on a smaller stage, in a smaller venue. I think it gave the show a really cool feel - made me feel more like seeing them back in the earlier days when they were playing much smaller venues and clubs.

Whoever was taping last night - please let us know when the show is available and where!

fun show

great crowd

good banter

love "hate it here"

wish they had used the colorful lights on the sides of the theater like they did last time, was waiting for that in the encore, but no luck

perhaps that would clash with their new simple approach to things?

wow, i've seen wilco quite a bit, but that show was FANTASTIC. one thing that really stood out to me was how great the sound was. jeff even commented on it at one point. the clarity in the mix was just outstanding. here are some other bulleted highlights (since i'm not really in long paragraph mode right now) :

-i took one of my friends and fellow musician to the show. he had VERY little experience with wilco's music. truthfully, he had no idea what to expect. he told me he was still really randomly excited. by the end of the night, my friend, who i never would have imagined liking wilco, told me "oh my god...i have a new favorite band. that was the best thing ever!" :D

-we were some of the first people to arrive. we took our pretty decent seats in the center section on the floor, but then a taper approached us about switching seats so he could tape. we were instantly upgraded to the fourth row for free!

-um, Wilco is better than ever! I was hoping for some old Wilco chesnuts and they surely delivered with Sunken Treasure, CA Stars, and I'm Always in Love.

-did I mention how awesome everything sounded??

-after the show me and my friend waited by the buses and we got to meet Jeff and Nels. They were so kind to their fans too! They had intent conversations with everyone, asked questions, etc. I gave Jeff a hug (!!) :hug (yes, it looked like that..) and got a picture with him. Its cool to know that jeff isn't a "dick" like all those frisbee golf players....haha...Then I had a pretty good conversation with Nels about releasing the shows he did at Largo with Jon Brion (one of which I was fortunate to celebrate my 17th birthday at!) He said he'd love to get the stuff out because its pretty awesome, but he doesnt know when. I told Nels I'd see him in NYC on Monday and he was like "you're going to one of those shows?!" And I proceeded to tell him how I was moving there (I'll be a freshman at NYU this fall and my orientation just happens to be the week of the NYC Wilco shows...) Nels seemed very happy with this and labeled me as "super rad" He also instructed me to tell my parents they are "super rad" too for letting me go to all these cool shows and he would look for me in NYC :thumbup

-hey look I'm a hypocrite....i did the big paragraph thing anyways!

-all in all, I feel incredibly lucky to get to have such experiences with such a supreme band. We're all so fortunate to have a band to worship like Wilco!! :worship

It is the same little girl-- and she was at the Chapel Hill show on March 05 2006 as well. She had a custom t-shirt with the phrase: "Rock on Little Sister" on it. I have some cute pics that I'll post here later on. Hopefully tonight...

At first, security wasn't going to allow the father and daughter even near the stage, and they turned them away. Jeff then came nearer the stage, and then the security fellow must've gotten the word in his ear-piece to allow the child onstage. She's a cutie, that's for sure. I was in row B and recognized her & her father and waved to them when they first came down the aisle.

cheers,

kevin

he was lost in the woods, which happend to be a disc golf course as well

not sure if golfers did not give him directions or just threw frisbees in his direction he did not say, but was not happy with them

reedy creek is a fun course to play BTW

thought he was going to say something nice about disc golf, but it quickly took a turn for the worse....

oh well

-did I mention how awesome everything sounded??

-...Nels seemed very happy with this and labeled me as "super rad" He also instructed me to tell my parents they are "super rad" too ...

the sound was noteworthy. i even noticed some very clean pat maraccas during one song! cris-py!

i love to imagine Nels calling you "super rad." that is fantastic image! :lol

and now, for those patient enough to make it this far, The (annotated) Set List:

--tv theme intro (what is this? lou grant?)

--sunken t--the new arrangement. the build at the end is so uplifting!

--you are my face--gorgeous outro!

--side with the seeds--"embracing the situation, is our only chance to be free..."

--IATTBYH--nels stood over to the side of mike to play along b4 the "dixie cup" section

--shake it off--as mentioned: during the first chorus break there was a solitary "woo"-er in the crowd. at the 2nd break, it was clear a "woo!" movement had started. :lol off mic, jeff mouthed a funny silent "woo!" after the song jeff asked if anyone was from indy, then credited indy with inventing the "woo!" response.

--handshake drugs--BIG FAT FUCK YES!--still cannot get enough of that underlying rhythm during the maelstrom build->

--impossible germany--"wherever you go, wherever you land..." :love

--sky blue sky :love "windows open and...raining in..."

--california stars--big fun in the middle of the set list--the crowd dug it

--hummingbird--jt & lilac duet/dance

--on and on and on--OMG. beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. this one is going to stick with me, i can tell. :love :music

--banter: jeff gives a shout out to those who made the trip from atlanta. asks if we're all still wet. (to which i reply "yes" as all the clothes in my luggage have become mysteriously damp. i blame the hotel AC.)

--war on war--at the crescendo of the song, the owl descended down low.

--banter: jeff "i wasn't expecting that". then went into the macramae rap. ending with "aggromae!" there was a guitar delay here so jeff riffed about his day lost on a frisbee golf course in town.

--jesus, etc.

--banter: jeff tells couple making out in the front row to get a room. then asks if wilco should keep the slow jams coming... :lol

--hate it here--i LOVE this song. the keys on it sound soooo good. mike? pat?

--shout out from "macromaniac!" :lol

--walken--lots of singing along in the crowd. jeff had a guitar gaff pretty early in the song. i couldn't see his face, but john gave him a laughing smile in response.

--IMTMWLY--glenn stood--mike and nels pointed to him in grand manners--very fun!

--------------

(at this point in my notes i wrote: HOT HOT HOT TONIGHT :) !!!)

--i'm always in love--i'd started to call my friend so she could hear the encore, but when i realized what song they were starting i put down the phone. :banana

--spiders--i'm digging the new arrangement! "IT'S GOOD TO BE ALONE!" :guitar

---------------

--shot in the arm--as previously stated: ROCKING! can't seem to sing this one loud enough.

--heavy metal drummer

BIG ending. BIG BIG fun.

As others have noted the sound was fantastic... volume, mix and clarity.

Jeff asked how everything sounded at one point and said it sounded real good on stage and then added "We're quite pleased"

After the last Charlotte show had the incident of some knucklehead yelling for "She's a Jar" during the last verse of mountain bed prompting a Tweedy tirade, I was quite happy that 1) Wilco came back to Charlotte, 2) the show was a sell-out and 3) the crowd was very good, at least in Orchestra Left (no dicks, quiet at the appropriate times, good banter at the right times and great responses to all the material). As humorous as his tirades can be, it's just a better vibe when he and the audience are on the same page, especially since this was my wife's first time seeing them.

Great show last night in Charlotte. I spoke to the taper upstairs and in the center and he said he would post the show here. Right after I spoke to him two guys who ended up next to me went and asked him if he was going to be selling tapes after the show...and then realized "Oh yeah, well I guess that would be illegal" I suppose they wanted a copy because they didn't plan on listening to it live...they talked the whole freaking time. Why do people put down 70 plus dollars on a show and then don't listen to it plus screw it up for the people around them? Anyway...I can't wait to download it and hear it again. Thanks in advance to the tapers...

Just out of curiosity: Does anyone know what time they went on last night? I'm going to the show tonight and it official start time is at 6:30 with Low opening.

Any thoughts on what time the boys will come on?

I believe it was right around 9, maybe a little after. I also remember a friend who saw them in ATL mentioning they went on around 8:45, so that timeframe is prob a safe bet.

Have a great show. Hopefully they will have plenty more left for you guys after the house came down at ovens last night.

i'm going tonight too....merriweather has a pretty hardcore police presence and i believe their curfew for shows is 11p sharp. i doubt low goes on at 6:30 though.

7:30p wilco on at 8:45, 90 minute show, then 20+ minutes of encores should end it before 11...
