tugmoose
. . . the day after his son got picked up with a pharmacy of pills in his car. Al, I know you're trying to save the planet. Perhaps you should start with your family. Or is the timing inconvenient? I know - it's not for me to scold. That's your job.
bjorn_skurj
My parents had no idea what I was up to, either. I took pains to deceive them, you see.

radiocure618
experts: pills are the new marijuana I've never understood the attraction some kids have to prescription drugs. My old roommate made a small fortune during finals by selling Adderall for five bucks a pill.

MrRain422
Bjorn is the voice of reason on this thread. Seriously, a lot of people get caught up in drugs. It's not necessarily a reflection on their parents, and I don't think it's anything that Al III even needs to be ashamed of. He's got some problems, he's getting help, so what? Mr. Kinsley
It's all an elaborate ruse to help promote the Prius. There was a front page article in the LA Times this AM talking about how the fact that the car was doing 105 mph is the real story in blogs/radio talkshows. Too bad Wilco is already doing the VW ads. And no, the kid's in rehab so I don't see anything wrong with Al the Elder doing talkshows, etc. I'm not real up on how rehab works, but once you're in a facility you don't really have much contact with those outside. Maybe a phone call. I think it's funny how when he doesn't do the "liberal" thing and go coddle his well-past 18 yr old son, but does the "conservative" thing where he gives a little bit of help and puts the personal responsibility on the kid for his own actions, he gets blasted for it. Interesting.
anodyne
the way rehab works is if you get caught doing a bad thing, you overpay for private "health care treatment" instead of going to jail like a normal person.

Atticus
if by "his views" you mean over 90% of the scientific community posted before I could even place a bet. I'm not even addressing whether his views are valid or how universally they are accepted--I'm merely pointing out the analogy that he made.

I'd say "so what" if the kid could keep from getting behind the wheel and keep the hybrid below 100 mph. Unfortunately, Al 3 seems to have a penchant for getting high/drunk and driving fast. When you do that, your problem becomes everyone's problem. I hope he gets better before he kills someone. You're absolutely right though, this has nothing to do with Al and Tipper's parenting. You could have the best parents in the world and get caught up with that stuff.

Duck-Billed Catechist
Seriously, though, how do they evaluate DUIs for drug cases? The drug expert just gives thumbs up or thumbs down? Does that hold up in court?
owl
I bet that you can determine intoxication from pills more easily than you can with just marijuana.

Did you (the generic you...not you in particular Mr. Rain) think it was a reflection of parenting when Jeb Bush's daughter got rolled up in a xanax prescription forgery arrest? I imagine more that a few of you expressed glee at Noelle Bush's addiction and arrest. We are WAY too caught up in schadenfreude.
