I used to be a a full on music nerd and working musician and no obscure release or band ever got by me without a listen. Now at 38 with a kid, I rarely hear or find bands that excite me. Wilco was a great find (by my wife). Of course, I knew about them and UT from reading but being cantankerous it took having her play the first 4 records non-stop for a year before I said "hey, this band is brilliant!"

I am hoping some of you cats can turn me on to some records/artists that might spark my interest.

Here's a framework:

I like Gomez' 1st record very much and Tegan and Sara's last record, Flank Black & the Catholics as well for newer stuff.

I was kind of a punk rock deadhead in my 20's with my favorite bands being; Pixies, Clash, Neil Young, Dinosaur Jr's 1st three records, TMBG, PJ Harvey. I also like real hillbilly music and AM gold

What music do you love? What am I missing?

Based on your liking Tegan and Sara, I'd recommend Rough Bunnies. And my default recommendation to everyone is always to check out Clem Snide and Eef Barzelay (of Clem Snide) if you don't already know them.

Music Map can be a pretty cool way to find out about new stuff that you may like. Just type in a band that you like and it'll give you examples of bands that other people who listen to the band you like also listen to.

I would say M.Ward. Post War is a great place to start.

I second this. Post War is a fine album.

The Magnolia Electric Co. have a new album (part of a box set actually) coming out called Nashville Moon, which I can not get enough of. It's kind of Neil Youngish... sort of. Like if Crazy Horse played on Harvest.

For some really fun, punk cover versions of old classics, check out Me First And The Gimme Gimmes. Great party music.

"I'm 37, I'm not old"

I'm nigh upon 40 here - but there's awesome music out there that's not lost in time

I like the Ted Leo suggestion for a little rock

for your folkie/acoustic fix, try Iron & Wine (esp. creek Drank the Cradle and Our Endless Numbered Days)

Try The Decemberists for a mix of the two with some eclecticism

You've already hit the jackpot with Wilco . . .

The second and third Gomez albums were good too. (But "Bring It On" is transcendent.) I am fond of a lot of stuff - I have liked The Shins and The Arcade Fire, as well as Wilco (obv.).
