Big Perm
At roughly 1:00 am last night, there was 4.5 earthquake Northwest of Chatsworth. But felt all over L.A. county it appears. Seems like it was moderate by all means, but still a hell of way to get woken up. That was my first time for anything like that, where I was, it was like someone grabbed the apt. and shook it. I thought I was dreaming.
gogo
I was telling a friend, after the last strong-enough-to-wake-you-up earthquake up here, that I kind of like one like that. Not a significant amount of damage, no death or injury, just a reminder that we're really not in charge here. It is an incredible feeling.
Big Perm
It was kind of exhilarating, not that I"m hoping for more, or even worse, but wild feeling for sure.
pnêyu
An earthquake of that magnitude is a relief--apparently, it takes some of the pressure off the faults and makes the "Big One" a little less likely (in the short term).
OOO
I never could tell if there was an earthquake happening or if the washing machine - that was directly beneath my room - was on.
Analogman
I had a 2 hour blackout here.
suites
I had a 2 hour blackout here. Today.....still have not missed a beat....do you have cell phone access to the board?
Analogman
No - it was last night from 8:30-10:30. I was waiting for the looting to begin. I think it is about to happen again right now. I was in an earthquake out there in the late 1980s.
gogo
I kind of like blackouts too, but again, that's based on a no-ill-effects scenario. A few years ago the power went out right before a big family party, the weekend before Christmas. At first it was kind of nice, the house was full of candles anyway and it was pretty cozy, but then my sister slipped on some candle wax that had dripped onto the stairs and twisted her ankle. And then my cousin and his wife, who are both hearing-impaired, showed up. They rely heavily on being able to see peoples' mouths when they're talking, and it was a nightmare for them. A friend of mine who was visiting for New Years Eve 2000 was really hoping for Y2K-related havoc. She wanted to go looting at this store down the street from my house. I was in an earthquake out there in the late 1980s.Were you here for the big one in 1989?
Analogman
It had to have been 84 or 85 - must have been a little one. I was on Treasure Island. Funny how ithe big ass storm always seems to waits until it is time to walk home to let it's doom loose. The deal last night was cause by an over surge of power somewhere - it is to hot here to go without AC these days. That is the first time such a thing has happened in the 14 years I have lived where I live. Even when other people were without power a few times because of some ice storms and whatnot our side of town was ok. Pittsburgh is getting it pretty bad right now. Mr. Kinsley
I had a 2 hour blackout here. Umm... we already had that covered. source - yahoo news ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Bronx is Burning Hey Perm- Welcome aboard! You're now an official Angeleno! Helluva way to initiate people though, if you ask me. I thought for sure it was at least a 5 or a 6. It really seemed to last for a while with the kind of gentle rolling right after the initial jolts. It is for this reason I never sleep naked. During the big Northridge quake in the early 90's I was asleep in the buff and ran to the doorway, flapping in the breeze so to speak. All I could think about the whole time was that the apt. building was going to crumble, I'd be trapped, and there would be some sort of nation-wide vigil to see if they could free me. Then, live on CNN for the whole world to see they'd pull me out by my junk. In such a situation shrinkage would undoubtedly have been involved and I would then be forced to crawl back into the wreckage to hide. Moral of the story: boxers at a minimum for sleepwear. gogo
the quake woke me up, i jumped out of bed, put on my slippers and thought, "i am not ready for this." There's always that moment of indecision: am I going to feel more stupid if I jump up and hunker down in the doorframe and this turns out to be nothing, or if I decide to just ride it out right here in my bed and the whole house collapses on me? Big Perm
My first thought was a truck was coming through the ceiling, until I realized i was actually shaking for a moment, then I thought did an elephant just fall on the roof? Then, I doze back off and woke up only then to realize it was an earthquake. tonight i'll sleep in jeans & a shirt.
