W(TF)
How do you rate Kicking Television/Live In Chicago? I'm just curious...was this a 9/10, or what. Are there even better shows one can find 'out there'? I've been really digging on KT lately. The set list is amazing, the performances and sound production are superb as well. Scalzunfield
Well Kicking Television was a combination of 4 nights of hard work. But it's far from why exactly I love Wilco. I keep hoping they'll release the 4th night of stuff in its entirety. That show demonstrated exactly why Wilco is my favorite band. They had numerous technical issues throughout the show that ended with Jeff just playing an acoustic and the band doing very abnormal songs for the "usual" setlist. They responded to all the issues by playing what is the greatest concert I've personally attended in my 23 years. Check out the setlist.
Bubs101
Yeah, I read in Q that they were just taking requests and played for hours
W(TF)
Cool. I should've known it wasn't one show....but it does have a cohesive feeling, and intimate like "you are there".

Check out the setlist.Just to ramble on about that show some more: Jeff grabbed a good friend of mine (ahem) and kissed him. Jeff stage-dived (or stage-dove, you pick). The bit about playing requests was a little bit off -- although he kept asking for more requests, they only played two of them. That setlist arrived through band member huddles, rather than through audience shoutings. I was only able to make it to Chicago for one of the four nights, so I picked that one, on the well-established theory that the last night of a multi-night is always best. I wasn't sorry to have missed the more normal nights, not at all. All that said, I bet most of it would sound pretty dorky on a cd. I think this was a defintie case of you had to be there. Preferred B
I agree with both Scalzunfield and Heidi. The last show was great, but they definitely picked and chose the right tracks for a live CD from that 4-night run. I think the collection is very representative of good Wilco shows. Here's one of my favorite quotes ever from Wayne Coyne - I think it was in an issue of Paste magazine in 2006. He puts into words better than I've ever managed it why nights like that last one at the Vic are among my favorites: "Some of the best shows I've ever seen have been because there was a catastrophe in there - [the band] didn't just play the songs right and the PA was perfect' date=' and the lights all worked. Usually, the best ones are like The Rolling Stones at Altamont. You know shit happened, and because shit happened people revealed more about themselves because they couldn't fake it. It wasn't the routine, it wasn't perfect, and I love that. So in the way we perform, we just invite whatever fucking chaos can happen and say 'Bring it on' because it will be the greatest moment ever."[/quote']
badger
Whilst Kicking Television is great, you can never quite capture on record the excitement of being there. Having seen the band on the current tour, however, I think that they are actually better than they were when KT was recorded. The Stuttgart show, which you can download from owlandbear.com and is an excellent recording, is a great example. Listen and compare!
mountain bed
KT is a great sounding record, and is a nice snapshot of the band at that time. I've mentioned this before, but seeing how it was their first official live release I really wish that there was more stuff from the first 3 records. At least 75% of what's on there is YHF/AGIB stuff. Nothing wrong with that I just wish it was a little more comprehensive.
jc4prez
I was there everynight and out of the 15 or so Wilco shows I've seen these have to be at the top. I do wish they would have realesed some of the rarities played those evenings. "Someone Else's Songs" was amazing same with "Say You Miss Me". I really hope one day they just put up the shows to download because they are amoung their best. Even if they just put up the last night post spiders. That was def. one of the best wilco shows i've seen. But id say most of the shows for that ghost is born tour were incredible. One of my favorites being the new years show that opened with Less Then You Think>Spiders with Jeff in his PJs.
SlowBurn68
Why the hell is KT not out on vinyl? I think the recording was some outstanding work.
W(TF)
I've been wondering the same thing.
Edie
Why the hell is KT not out on vinyl? I think the recording was some outstanding work. Based on their typical three songs a side, that would be a 4 record set and therefore about a million dollars.

You don't think they could sell over million copies? It would be a shame not to put that recording on vinyl. Maybe if it was bundled with songs not on the original album. Sir Stewart
KT's okay, but it's nothing like being at a show.

For this reason alone I wonder how long it will be before we get another live Wilco record. How many does Neil have? 7 or 8? It would be cool if they put something else out in a couple of years, and dug a bit farther into Being There. I'm glad we got a live one with the mighty six lineup! I believe My Morning Jacket is already on their 3rd and last pressing of Okonokos 4 LP set. I'm betting KT 4 LP set would sell really well for a $40.00 pricetag. watchtower41
I guess the days of the $12 double LP are well behind us! With the stress put upon everything having to be at least 180g now-a-days, youre probably right. Buying vinyl has become too much of a phenomenon, many people that buy records dont even have player to listen to them, soely collecting for future values.
W(TF)
With the stress put upon everything having to be at least 180g now-a-days, youre probably right. Buying vinyl has become too much of a phenomenon, many people that buy records dont even have player to listen to them, soely collecting for future values. Most people buying these type of LP releases are audiophiles. They're expecting superior sound and are willing to pay for it, but in absolute numbers we're talking about a really small number. Typical runs are 5000 copies for a well known band like Wilco, maybe 25000 for a really anticipated reissue, like the purple Hendrix box. The cost economics are lousy. It's not just the 180 gram platters, it's legalese, distribution, and the fact that only 2-3 major plants remain that still produce records. And lastly, the mastering. Stan Ricker did SBS (he's most famous for the MoFi issues), you see Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray's names on many current issues. I'm not sure if Bob Ludwig is still cutting vinyl. But none of these guys come cheap. (say $10K to master your record? so you just added $2 a pop to your costs)
radiokills
its so-so. obviously the actual live experience cant compare to a recording, but i have collected a few other live recordings and i feel that the few i have capture the "wilco live" spirit much better. Katie3
Nothing can compare to really seeing them live, same as with any band, in my opinion.
DAngerer09
I had listened to KT many times before I got to see them live. And, as was said above me, nothing compares to seeing them live.
