nicburto
Hey friends - I just returned from a summer internship abroad where I had little to no access to the internet or western (as in, part of the world) music. Please recommend some stuff that has come out in the past two months or so. I bought the new white stripes and ryan adams yesterday, but I'm looking for more. Any suggestions are appreciated. your faithful servant,Nick
Synthesizer Patel
Super Furry Animals - Hey Venus!Gruff Rhys - CandylionPanda Bear - Person PItchCaribou - Andorra They are all myspace links, if you want to hear the music. None of them are new bands, but all of them have released, or are about to release, new albums this year, which are all very good.
Wendy
Welcome back Nick! I hope to hear some stories about your experience one day -- but to answer your question: Okkervil River - The Stage Names (and I recommend waiting for the 2-CD version to become available again, as it's sold out at the moment). Iron & Wine - Shepherd's Dog (right now only a leak, official release in a month)

Wendy
Also, lots of love around here for anything by The National - especially the newest release called the Boxer (I admit to not yet giving enough attention to The National but what I have heard, I like - and if you like it and are heading back to ATL, Sept 8 you can catch them at the Variety Playhouse). And I'll second the Spoon recommendation.

Wendy
Was the 2 CD version the one with the bonus EP, or was Stage Names actually issued as a double or deluxe edition?Mine has 2 CDs in it. I haven't seen anyone call it a bonus EP. from Jagjaguwar:http://www.jagjaguwar.com/out now on CD, LP, and limited edition deluxe 2xCDand...Okkervil RiverThe Stage Names (JAG110cd, Jagjaguwar) CD $11.00*We are now out of the deluxe 2xcd version - though limited copies will be available in stores on 8/7/07. The standard single disc version is now ava... from Amazon.com:The double CD deluxe edition contains solo demos of each of the songs from the proper album and is limited to only 1500 copies. High prices in the amazon resale section (25, 50, 80 bucks!) Those 1500 are apparently sold out (I bought mine from Jagjaguwar for 11 bucks), but I think I read at okkervil's new website that they were making more available to indie stores, something like that. http://okkervilriver.com/ iTunes and eMusic have other non-CD tracks. From the jagjaguwar website: There are two non-album bonus tracks available for download via Itunes and Emusic. Itunes has the pop gem "Starry Stairs" available and Emusic has the brooding ballad "Love To A Monster" availalble.
