caliber66
Glavine's ERA is 189.00 today. His WHIP was only 21.00.
tugmoose
I know my mom's sad about the Mets, but I also know she LOVES the fact that both her boys are gonna be working the post-season, me in Cleveland and my brother in Philly.

Lammycat
Rockies win 13 of last 14 games. Pretty damn impressive. It's been fun watching them the last few months. Lots of young guys just coming into their prime, and all. They play SD tomorrow at Coors Field for the WC.

tongue-tied lightning
sorry Bjorn & MArt, I gave all the vibes I ahd. keep Willie GlavineEl DukeDelgadoLaducaGreenMotaAlou all gone
Lammycat
keep WillieI agree. I think he did an admirable job considering the shitty bullpen he was forced to work with. I'm thinking it's less his fault and more the GM's fault.
bjorn_skurj
It is more Omar's fault, but I would like Willie fired because he acted like this was no big deal. Groups of players vary - I think this group might need a screaming lunatic or at least someone with a bit more intensity, fer chrissakes. All right, I'm going to watch The War, when people had real problems. bobbob1313
So, last year Willie's a genius. Last year, Willie had the best bullpen in the league. This year, with many of the same guys, he's an awful manager and his bullpen is shitty. Maybe it's because they didn't know enough to anticipate a huge dropoff from Delgado, Alou and Beltran's pretty predictable injury problems, Jose Reyes somewhat dissappointing season, and a patchwork rotation that over performed for 4 out of the 6 months of the season and then came back to earth when it mattered most. Their bullpen wasn't even that bad. The Mets fall was not unpredictable if you looked at the signs. The only thing that wasn't expected was Reyes comedown, but it's not really too unexpected. He showed more power last year than he ever had, and it's not too surprising that his power went down as he stopped swinging for the fences and began being more patient. Whatever, next year's gonna be tough for the Mets. I wouldn't be surprised to see them fall to 3rd or 4th in the division unless they seriously revamp their rotation. The Braves are going to be very good next year, the Phillies will probably be as good, and the Marlins might even move up on them if their pitching can be even league average. tongue-tied lightning
the bullpen was horrid when they needed them most. Omar never got the key pitcher they needed at the all-star break. Willie was left with old arms of Duke & Glavine. the problem is why can't Willie pick his coaches ? why was Ricky Henderson & HoJo brought in ? this was a very much veteran team. A manager who screamed his head off wouldn't get through to this bunch. Reyes for whatever reason lost all his confidence. The Met callapse was more on the starting rotationt than the hitting. predicting next is a bit premature, even for you Chris.

Willie was left with old arms of Duke & Glavine. This is exactly what I was thinking when I posted on this earlier. When the signs were there that changes needed to be made with the bullpen, nothing was done. Though it was close to the same bullpen as last year it was not as productive and, more so, a case can made that it was counter-productive. If people want to call for Willie's head because of a perceived lack of tenacity/chutzpah/go-get 'em/whatever then that's one thing, but to suggest he was a major factor in the team losing it as the season wore on is not accurate, imo. bobbob1313
I'm saying, as things stand they don't look very good going into next season. They've got a sure thing stud in Wright, but there's question marks all around him. You don't know what to expect from any of those guys. If they can go out and pick up Willis and another good starter, maybe that'll change, but that team needs a serious overhaul soon. They should've won it lastyear, that was their only shot, really. MrRain422
AL MVP: Should be and will be A-RodNL MVP: Should be Chase Utley. No idea who will win it though. AL Cy Young: Tough one, but my pick would be C.C. Sabathia, or maybe even Erik Bedard. Probably going to Beckett though.NL Cy Young: Should be and will be Jake Peavy AL Rookie of the Year: Should be Okajima, but I think it will go to Dustin Pedroia.NL Rookie of the Year: Should be Ryan Braun. Will be Troy Toluwitzki. AL Manager of the Year: Eric WedgeNL Manager of the Year: Yeah, I know this award is stupid already, but if it goes to anyone but Bob Melvin, then it reaches an all time low. Anyway, I'm jumping on the Cleveland bandwagon now.Don't know about 00, but the 73 team won about 82 games, took out the Big Red Machine in 5 and took the defending champion A's to 7 before losing. They were hardly victims of bad fortune. (I was a huge Mets fan then, before they traded Tug.) Welcome to the bandwagon! You're getting on about the same time as many Clevelanders (it is football season, ya know).

I agree with most of this but think Matt Holliday deserves the NL MVP over Utley (he, along with Tulowitzski, have carried the Rockies the entire year and barely missed the batting title for NL); and again state that Tulowitzki is more deserving of the NL ROY as his offense has been incredible, as has Braun's, but he is Gold Glove worthy, as well. Also, I think Pedroia is more deserving of the AL ROY.
MattZ
This was tough. I'm not even sure where to start. But hats off to the Phils who probably have fans that have suffered longer and harder than we have. The Phils and their fans certainly deserve it. The Mets didn't. You know there's a real problem when the fans seem to want it more than the players do. Of course, there's no way for me to know that for sure, but it certainly looked like that. And bobbob -- you are right that Willie is probably getting an unfair share of the blame. Especially when you consider how the pitching came back to earth and the pen was made up of scrubs. But at the same time there were a lot of ominous signs -- Reyes not running out balls, Milledge showing up the other team all year, Delgado (?) being quoted in the paper recently that "we are so good sometimes we get bored"(!!). I know these players need to police themselves and have a certain amount of pride in themselves, but this was a team that didn't appear to be focused. I think Willie faces a large amount of blame for that. Keith Hernandez said it in the booth -- this team committed the crime of hubris. I am still hurting too much to find another team to jump on. Great job by the Marlins bringing their A game. Great job by the Phils. This is why they play the games. Now I will go bury my head in the sand and pretend this all never happened.
