Gobias Industries
I've been thinking about getting a loop station with my hard-earned work money in college, which I think will come in handy especially in live settings with either just myself or a small group. It seems like Boss is a logical solution, but does anyone else have any ideas as to working loop stations? Also, I'm kinda considering getting a distortion/overdrive pedal...I'm especially interested in Harrison tones*. Any ideas? I've had to live with using my amp's overdrive (which reminds me, I need to replace my Pro Jr.'s tube...) and while it's worked, the sound doesn't feel dynamic to me, it just feels flat and un-"inspired," so to speak. Ideas? I'm looking for mostly under 100$, though if there really is a must-must-must-get pedal then I can look into it. If it helps, I'm playing a mid-90's Korean-made Epiphone Casino. *Tones I really dig of Harrison's:-slide guitar tones, early solo (My Sweet Lord, not the 2000 version)-tone on the solo in the studio recording of Something (it's a slightly overdriven one)-tone on the lead guitar in And Your Bird Can Sing (this may be a McCartney lead part, since the tone is similar to the Taxman solo, and given their studio recording procedures anyone really could have done it, but damn I love this tone) thanks! I've never been one for digital effects, but Bill Frisell uses a Line 6 Delay Modeler (I think it has about 14 seconds for the loop) and holy crap he does some amazing stuff with that thing. It approximates a tube-type tape loop echo pretty well. The reverse delay is pretty sweet, too. They run about $250.
ginandcigarettes
Check of the digitech jam man: http://www.digitech.com/products/JamMan/JamMan.htm It looks more verstatile than the Boss version (though it doesn't have reverse). I don't have either, so I can't say. I do have the Line6 and its looper function is pretty rad with the reverse and half-speed options. As far as George Harrison's sound, you might look into something that gives a good slow leslie effect. That sound is all over Abbey Road, but it's unfortunately hard to get through a pedal without it just sounding like chorus. I know the prohibitively expensive H&K Rotosphere does a pretty good leslie, but I don't have any first hand knowledge. I have a Line6 Rotomachine that's pretty good, but it does sound a lot like chorus in the slow setting. A Vox AC30 and a Sola Tone Bender will get you pretty far towards an mid-period George sound. I know Fulltone used to make a copy of the Tone Bender called the Soul Bender, but it's discontinued. You might find one on ebay, though. You might want to check out Beatles Gear for more specifics about songs and eras and the like. I hope this helps.
Atticus
I think zvex still makes a looper that I've seen J Mascis use lo-fi loop junky
jimmyjimmy
I think zvex still makes a looper that I've seen J Mascis use lo-fi loop junkyThat's a neat pedal. I own one.It should be noted that it's no where near as flexible as most loopers out there. And, while it's essentially a noiseless circuit , the effect itself adds a certain ambiance (read: lo-fi noise) to the signal. Not for everyone. Check Youtube for a demo. Gobias Industries
The Zvex pedal looks really cool...it's pretty expensive though. There's apparently a lot more to loop stations than I originally considered...I'm definitely going to give this more thought. I just remembered about the Fulltone OCD, it seems to be a great fit...to me.
WaronWar
I have a Boss RXL-20 (I think that is what it is called, but I am pretty tired). It's cool, and can do some cool stuff on there (my favorite is the reverse button). But I would still rather have an electro-harmonix 16 second digital delay. But I have asked a couple of stores, and they say that is out-of-print.

Im an Akai Headrush fan...looper, delay, tape head its nice! A few things on George...a lot of his distinctive slidework was done on rocky, his strat...The AYBCS solo was done both by Harrison and McCartney, on SG and Casino, respectively...although the original (anthology version) solo was by George in the last Beatles use of Rickenbacker 360-12 string... I bet your casino smokes!! jobu

Golden Smoghead
I have the cheapy version of the boss pedal, and I don't like it. Basically it always feels to me like there's a slight delay with the triggering, so the only loops I can really do with it are on songs with slower tempos (or slower LINES vice tempos) so I can compensate / cover for the delay. It works OK if I'm playing solo, but my drummer fucking hates that shit and some songs we would like to use it. In hindsight I wish I'd saved my money and bought one of the better loop stations discussed in this thread. Just my opinion though and probably other people can use that pedal to good effect, to me it's kinda annoying though. What I really want is a loop station where I can record the basic chords for the verse of a song and have it synch up precisely, be able to stop that loop at the chorus with another pedal (vice the double-tap on this one), and then quickly fired it up again after the chorus. Obviously, I'm the only guitar player in the band.
