TCP
From MEC's website:All of us are tremendously saddened by the sudden and tragic death of our good friend and collaborator, Evan Farrell. Evan, who played bass and pedal steel with us during our fall tour this year, was caught in a fire caused by a space heater in an apartment in Oakland, CA late last week. He died due to massive smoke inhalation. Evan was an incredible musician and a dear, dear friend. He was a member of Japonize Elephants, Rogue Wave, The Hollows, Mega Mousse, Kentucky Nightmare, and countless other projects and collaborations. He was funny, kind, generous, and supremely talented
kidsmoke
How incredibly sad. I just saw him on that tour too. Rest in peace, Evan.
Wendy
I remember him from several Rogue Wave shows I attended over his tenure with them ... He worked the merch table at one show and we chatted a bit, mostly about being Hoosiers. Nice guy and a real character. He always made the funniest faces and said funny things onstage. So so sad! Evan is the one with the holey jeans. ...

Wendy
Thanks, willywoody ... I did too. Got this today from his wife. dear friends, forgive this impersonal way of sending my deepest thanks for your generous donation to evan's memorial fund. with nearly 300 individuals and families donating to the fund, email has turned out to be the most feasible way to thank everyone. so...thank you! i can't tell you how helpful it is to me and my family. you may also be interested in knowing that with help from the memorial fund, i've purchased a red oak tree with a memorial plaque in evan's honor that will be planted in the spring in bryan park. it will be near the tennis courts, off the "beaten track" if you ever find your way to bloomington's finest park and feel like visiting. some of evan's remains will be scattered there as well. if you weren't able to attend the memorial service in bloomington on january 20th, i am attaching the program and a podcast is available online at www.wfhb.org. nearly 600 people filled the buskirk chumley theatre. it was an amazing event filled with tears and laughter - just as evan would have wanted it. i wish you all of the love and peace possible in your life. take care, jill nielsen-farrellevan's wife If anyone wants a copy of the .pdf of the program from the service, send me a PM. It was very nicely done with pictures and history commemorating his life.
Willkoman
I too saw Evan on the fall tour. He had hurt his back sometime prior to the show I saw so explained the beers he was drinking were for pain. It didn't hurt his playing one bit and added some levity to a really great show. Sad news. willywoody
from pitchfork: "As previously reported, former Rogue Wave bassist and Magnolia Electric Co. touring member Evan Farrell died late last year in an Oakland apartment fire. Farrell's untimely passing has weighed heavily on many, and none so much as the wife and two children the beloved musician left behind. Several big names have stepped forward to help the Farrell family by contributing unique items to a benefit auction hosted by friends of Evan. Among the goods available now on eBay for bidders: a signed copy of Thom Yorke's The Eraser, a printer's proof for the New Pornographers' Challengers bearing the signature of Mr. A.C. Newman, a signed copy of Joan of Arc's classic Live in Chicago, 1999, and a bunch of awesome posters and rare screen-prints from Jay Ryan and Mat Daly of Chicago's own Bird Machine printmaking collective (the folks responsible for lots of snazzy Pitchfork Music Festival promotional material as well). More items are expected to hit the auction block.... Most of the current auctions end on the evening of Sunday, February 17 (with the Newman one ending the following Tuesday morning), and all proceeds once again go to Evan Farrell's family. You may also still donate directly to the Farrells via PayPal .... "
