I give it to you. This section has never sounded exactly right to my ear either, but I have not found a better alternative. My solution? I cheat. I mute the strings at the D chord (by laying index finger across the nut) then slide into the G. A decent approximation, IMHO. If anyone else has a suggestion, I am all ears (forgive the pun).
