remphish1
have you been to Minneapolis/St. Paul, or just somewhere in between on your list? I have unfortunatley been to the Mall of America (Part of a cross country camp) but not Minneapolis/St Paul. I even been to the airport about 4 times. Looks nice from a distance. I do hear great things about it and am planning on going in 2008 as I am going to go to North Dakota to get that final state!

IRememberDBoon
I keep hearing great things about Richmond. I'll have to go there someday. I defintiely would not consder DC underrated. Alot of folks think DC is crime ridden and dangerous etc.......having lived in the District most of the last ten years i can tell you thats BS. DC has really come around since the early 90s. An unreal transformation. Richmond should start a food festival. SO MANY great neighborhood restaurants and bars etc..........The Fan is such a cool neighborhood and there are enough restaurants for a month straight of unreal meals. Richmond is just old and beautiful.
OOO
I like Austin, Chicago, Minneapolis, San Diego, San Fran and Seattle. Roughly in that order.

solace
no offense to San Fran folks... but after spending a decent amount of time there on 2 different trips last year (June and Nov), while there are certainly a LOT of amazing things about that city, overall i guess i was a bit underwhelmed. maybe it was built up too much from other folks i've talked to or ever thought about it, dunno. it certainly is a great city if you like to shop, that's for sure. the bay area in general is amazing though, just as a singular city though, i expected more from SF, it's downtown especially. not to say i don't love SF, don't get me wrong, but i think i even preferred San Diego to San Fran (and certainly Portland, as far as west coast cities go). now Berkeley on the other hand, i could definitely live there... jff
Alot of folks think DC is crime ridden and dangerous etc.......having lived in the District most of the last ten years i can tell you thats BS. I guess those perceptions never really die. I've been to DC a bunch of times over the last ten years and never felt unsafe at any time of the day. I did see some rough areas on the way out of town heading towards Annapolis, but all cities have areas like that.

I liked the Jimmy Carter Library, CNN Center tour, The Coco-Cola Museaum, The Aquarium is very impressive, Botanical Gardens are nice too, I also stayed at the 4 season (which is where I got engaged, so it has some extra special personal importance). Had some great meals!

There's definitely more for visiters to do in Atlanta now than any time I can remember.

quarter23cd
4. New Orleans (Bourbon Street in cool and the food in N'awlins is some of the best I have ever had, but the rest doesn't have as much going I'd actually put NO at #1 on my favorites list. Definitely the most unique American city I can think of. Haven't been there post-Katrina, though. You're right about the food, but I'd say that Bourbon St is an okay tourist starting point, but plenty of good stuff beyond that. Boston is my #2, I think. DC and NYC obviously have a ton of interesting stuff, but having lived in and around both of them, its hard for me to be objective. I love them and hate them both equally, depending on the day. Overall, I prefer DC. I grew up in northern VA and would move back there if it wasn't so crowded/expensive now. IRememberDBoon, you might be onto something with Richmond. I currently live outside of Columbus, OH, which I would put somewhere on a list of "well-kept-secret" cities that most people don't know anything about but is actually pretty decent. I probably wouldn't call it my "favorite" anything, but it is home.

I love both of those places and Roslyn but anywhere further out is just an absolute nightmare. Every single day. Richmond is great. You can make as much $$$ and the cost of living is half and there is zero traffic. That being said I would still prefer to live in Georgetown or Dupont but Richmond would be a close second. Serak_the_Preparer
In general I am not a fan of big cities (I prefer the mountains), but some cities i have been to that I enjoyed are Portland, OR; Boulder, CO; Madison, WI; and oddly enough, Iowa City is very nice (I lived there for 2 years). I also enjoyed NYC, but was only there for about 1 day so i can't list it as a favorite.

I love both of those places and Roslyn but anywhere further out is just an absolute nightmare. Every single day.Yep. And its a shame. I grew up just down the road from GMU, back when that was considered pretty much the far outskirts of the burbs. Was a nice place to grow up. My parents still live there and I agree that traffic is a nightmare. My sister lives in Manassas and I wouldn't wish that commute upon anybody. If you're going to do DC, I agree, you gotta commit to it and live in DC. Same goes for NYC. I lived in that area for 8 years and kept moving farther and farther out, in search of a lower cost of living that I never really found. Looking back, my favorite place I had was my initial crappy apartment in the Bronx that I got kicked out of b/c the landlord wasn't zoned for that many apartment units in the house. It was a shithole, but in a nice way, you know?

The french style archtiecture is great though. Columbus is decent. I like Germantown....and yep Richmond is nice..only spent a few hours there though...
