  1. 1. Do I have the right be be annoyed when the person in front of me on a plane decides to recline their seat as far back as it can go?

    • Yes, that's inconsiderate behaviour.

    • No. The seat is designed to recline that far, quit being a baby.

    • ction, I'm pretty sure you are always the more annoying person, regardless of the situation.

I usually look behind me first to give the person a head's up if I'm going to kick back. I don't think it's rude but I know a lot of people do. I don't know why. They recline so you can recline. I also get pissed when the person in front of me does it, though.

I voted yes, with the caveat that I'm annoyed at the airlines for jamming as many seats as possible into the plane. If they would take out a row or two of seats and give us all some more space, it wouldn't be a problem.

I hate it too, as one who generally chooses not to recline due to a bad back.

I think what gets me the most is the person who, immediately when the bell goes ding, practically ejects themselves backwards in their haste to move it back.

Still, I voted yes because it annoys me, though I think they have the right to, since the seat does actually recline :realmad

Yep. Typically, I will bump and kick the seat in front of me if the person chooses to kick back. If they think that they are going to get comfortable and take a nap while i'm trapped, they're wrong. I may not have the "right" to be upset, but I am.

I'm 6'2" and planes simply aren't made for tall people.

Why don't you recline too, then the person behind you can recline, and on and on until the poor sucker in the last seat against the wall gets crushed?

Because I've been that poor sucker. In fact, I was that poor sucker on a plane that was delayed on the runway for over an hour and a half.... and then 1/2 hour from landing in Chicago was diverted to Indiana due to inclimate weather in Chicago. I was in that seat for over 5 hours total. Claustraphobic!

I realize that people have the right to do it but I do find it a bit inconsiderate. Honestly, I only have about a 1/2" between my knees and the seat in front of me. My company won't flip for first-class and you rarely earn enough miles to upgrade as you are constantly switching airlines to find the best deal. Luckily, I don't fly more than once a quarter or so. I wish they would just take out one row of seats and give everyone a smidge more room. I don't know what the revenue impact would be but I'm sure that they could raise prices on the remaining seats by $1.50 to make up the difference..... or quit handing out the extra bag of "trail mix"

Not sure how early you book your flights..but whenever I book mine I do it early enough to choose my own seat. Maybe you could try to get the beginning of the section so there aren't any seats in front of you?

If someone's bumping/kicking my seat on purpose there'll be problems. I'm conscious of people behind me but it's not my fault you're too big for the plane. Take it up with the airlines/stewardess. Or, ask me politely to move the seat up a bit and explain yourself and I'll gladly oblige.

:dancing sometimes a seat gets bumped when adjusting a seat belt....or the tray gets stuck. Maybe they should have different sections of the plane for people that are over 6'?

And sometimes food gets dislodged from my mouth and lands behind me. In all seriousness, people over 6' should be required to buy the seat in front of them, too.

Anybody over 5' is uncomfortable on a plane. We're all dealing with limited space.

I'm only 5'3", and I usually get to sit in the "premium" coach section on United, which gives me a few extra inches of legroom, so I'm usually not overly concerned with whether or not the person in front of me is reclined. And unless it's a redeye, I rarely recline myself, but in that case, you're definitely in the territory of "everyone is reclined". My biggest gripe is that because I usually like to have a window seat, it's really hard to get out of a row of three seats when every person in the row ahead of me is reclining.

Otherwise, I say if the seats recline, unless there's a compelling reason not to (as Lammycat mentioned above, tell the person in front of you if you're that squished), it's totally allowable.

I was only joking! Not to play devil's advocate here, and I get what you're saying about taller people having more issues, but what if the person in front of you has back problems and is in pain when the seat is upright? Who is more deserving?

I never recline my seat more than a tiny bit, just to get it out of that 90 degree angle, and I do think it's uncomfortable when the person in front of me reclines, but I don't necessarily think they're being inconsiderate since the seats are designed to recline. Maybe you can write to the airlines and request that they weld the seats so they don't move. Or that they pull out a few rows of seats and make more room. I think they did that on those new Virgin America planes.

Also, if you book early enough on an airline that allows you to choose seats you can get the first row where there's more legroom. You're screwed if you fly Southwest though...no assigned seating.

How am I supposed to access my carry-on bag that I've politely stowed under the seat in front of me if the seat in front of me is now in my lap? Huh? Tell me how!

:hug I'm not upset...I just wanted to share that nightmare story. However, it doesn't look quite as dramatic in print.

Ultimately, I'll suck it up due to the limited amount of travel that I do. It really does suck though. At times, I'll just pay the additional "upgrade" fee to sit in Gogo's section.

Lammy - I think the chances of you sitting in front of me on a flight are probably pretty slim. However, if some food comes flying, I'll come up and introduce myself and maybe we can enjoy a $5 can of Budweiser or something. It's a small world.

And I still find it a bid inconsiderate....although I fully recognize people's right to do so.
