jc4prez
http://growingbolder.com/media/Entertainme...ils-127764.html found this cool video, roger plays a few songs while riding the train with his wife. Thought with all the byrds talk around here some would enjoy. You also get to find out what a rich bastard he is as well.
myboyblue
That's the best I've heard him sound in years. Coincidentally, for those of you that don't know, one of Tweedy's first songs was called "Train" and featured a Roger McGuinn reference.

LouieB
You also get to find out what a rich bastard he is as well. I haven't watched this footage yet, but I would guess he is not so rich compared to Neil Young and Bob Dylan. LouieB
Analogman
Roger at home. Roger on collecting radios. What is this site - a place for old rockers?
Golden Smoghead
This really floats my boat. I may have to track down that "country album" he referred to. That Guthrie cover was money.

LouieB Your right, but if I watched a video of either of them brining their own crystal for a traveling or had any number of those "toys" of his I'd probably joke about. LouieB
Pretty funny....a website for folks in my demographic....but then again Roger is getting up there... Actually considering everything I don't think Roger is all that rich at all. He seems to be traveling fairly frugally in fact. Or is it the fact that he has a bunch of gadgets? LouieB What's sadder, bands like Blondie playing casinos, or people such as Roger playing corporate events? I wonder. He has always had an interest in electronic gadgets - that is nothing new. He has always had an interest in electronic gadgets - that is nothing new. Both are sad, but both inevitable. Let's be honest, Roger's act is very routine and old, but then what would anyone expect?? I suppose there are only so many times in ones life where you can put a Beatle beat to a Dylan song or a folk song and make musical history. Roger has put out some reasonably interesting records late in his career, but none of it will beat his work with the Byrds. That's just life I suppose. I am sure he is comfortable on his ongoing royalties from those records and more power to him. You are correct, gadgets and McGuinn kind of go together.... Actually alot of musical acts have taken more time getting to the oldies curcuit than it did in the old days. After all guys like Chuck Berry were already oldies acts by the turn of the 1960s and he continues to make an okay living on this nearly 50 years later. LouieB

LouieB
I was reading somewhere the other day that Chuck Berry was making a new album. That may be the scariest music news ever....... Every once in awhile they play Chuck on XRT and the DJ has to tell people who he is.....or what he did to be famous. Berry's material made at Chess studios may be some of the coolest sounding music ever made....but there is no doubt that he has been an oldies act, doing the same set of songs his entire career. It could be worse I suppose. LouieB

mountain bed
Of course I'm biased, but I think someone like Phil Lesh has managed to age gracefully and still make interesting music. Is he playing the GD songbook? Yes. But with an ever-revolving cast of musicians, and constantly changing arrangements. For me, it beats the crap out of a guy in his mid 60s prancing around on stage in spandex, who's been a millionaire since he was in his early 20s singing about "can't get no satisfaction'. And I am a Stones fan btw.

And I am a Stones fan btw.Oh I agree to an extent. Musicians can and do long and fruitful careers if they take the aging process as natural and don't expect the same kind of adulation that they got in their early years. Even Dylan has made it through by dealing with the fact that he will never write what made him famous in his earlier years. We can debate how good the more recent records are (or the efficacy of liberally quoting older material), but you gotta give him credit. Interesting article in the Trib today about how the new movie on the Stones makes Mick look like shit physically. Nothing like early Bo Diddley either, but by the time I saw Bo in the late 1970s or early 80s his act was an embarrassment. He was on a double bill with Chuck Berry who had to fly back to MO or somewhere to go back to jail for tax problems so we didn't get to see him. But Bo's bragging about sexual exploits at length made us walk out (we were soaked due to a lengthy rain delay at Chicago Fest which is why Chuck had to go home...) and I have never quite felt the same way about him. But his records from back in the day are terrific. LouieB

LouieB
I know on the other thread some folks were saying how lame the Byrds were, but to me, whatever they come out with from the early days will be gold..... LouieB
JerseyMike
I haven't watched this footage yet, but I would guess he is not so rich compared to Neil Young and Bob Dylan. Compared to those two, no he isn't very rich, but he does OK. When i worked as a booking agent, Roger was one of our clients at the time and he does get a nice fee for his performances. Unfortunately, many of the Byrds biggest hits were written by Dylan or Gene Clark.
