myboyblue
Thanks for the link. I saw this in Sunday's Tribune and was a bit shocked. Looks like we may be able to, at least, get our voice heard. I'm all for safety in the clubs but don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Dr. Steve Brule
from a friend's myspace: Fight This Ordinance! Save Chicago Music. Here's How.Body: So, as i'm sure many of you know from the amount of posting and emailing done over this last weekend...we're kindof screwed! There is an oridance set to cripple music promotion in this city. Which in turn will cripple small venues. whats happening:This Wednesday, led by 47th Ward Alerman Gene Schulters committee, an ordinance is being voted on by the city council (50 alderman) that will require all promoters who organize a show (even if its a benefit) to pay a $500 to $2000 promoters licensing fee to the city of chicago. Oh, and they would now need a $300,000 insurance policy too... what this means:This basically means you have to go with a promoter who can pay that annual fee easily to get a show together. Unless you really want to use your stimulus package to become a "promoter", you'll have to cough up a lot of money, time, and patience to start promoting in this city. SoWhat can we do...? Well, I live in Schulters 47th. I have faxed, called, and emailed their office today. I talked to their policy person, Beth, and made my views known. They make it seem like they have the votes, and this is almost a done deal. Word is that since this has "been in committee for over a year", no one can stall this vote from being on Wednesday. It can NOT be called out for more public hearings or argued in any way. That means we have until Wednesday to call all of our alderman and ask them to: "OPPOSE THIS ORDINANCE"but ask nicely Ask for their 'policy advisors', their 'chief of staff', even the Alderman themselves...(some of them answer the phone)They key is to get someone on the phone, at least have them call you back. leave your name, your address, your number. email them. they have to compile them for the alderman. Do something about this, this is our last shot... and please... pass this posting around... ----------------------Ward 1:Alderman Manuel Floresward01@cityofchicago.orgPhone: 773-278-0101---------------------Ward 2:Alderman Robert FiorettiPhone: 312-263-9273Fax: 312-786-1736---------------------Ward 3:Alderman Pat Dowellward03@cityofchicago.orgPhone: 773-373-9273---------------------Ward 4:Alderman Toni Preckwinkletpreckwinkle@cityofchicago.orgPhone: 773-536-8103Fax: 773-536-7296---------------------Ward 5:Alderman Leslie A. LouieB
I will be happy to sign the petition. Sadly contacting Bernie Stone will be a complete waste of time since he is a jerk. This is totally bad news. LouieB

mountain bed
Jesus H. Christ. I would expect something like this to happen in India-no-place, but Chicago? As Kris said, this is just totally fucked up. Nice job posting up the #s of the Aldermen, Dr. Steve. I'll hope for the best for you all.

LouieB
Now if we could just rid ourselves of all the crooked politicians (oh that would be just about all of them), we would really have something going. I don't believe this thing is dead, but at least it has been beaten back. Covering liablility is probably needed; and having the city cover some of it and helping with this coverage for the good of music makers and music listeners is probably a good idea. In recent years the clubs have stopped stuffing as many people as possible into their venues, but that won't necessarily keep bad stuff from happening. The city government should protect fans from unscrupulous promoters and protect honest and well intentioned ones at the same time. Clearly hurting those venues and promoters who are responsible isn't the way to go. LouieB
